  • Having dipped his toe in Belgian waters in 1994 and 1995, Liam O’Callaghan returned in 1996 to tackle the premier event in the country, the Ypres 24 Hours Rally. O’Callaghan was to retire early on with transmission issues but up front a young Belgian by the name of Freddy Loix was blazing a trail, leading such luminaries as Armin Schwarz and Patrick Snijers. Loix was fastest on all but 4 of the 39 stages to win by almost 3 minutes to take his first of 11 wins on the event.

RPM coverage of rallies was top class. Right amount of interviews and good stage action and great commentary. Compare that to WRC where its too much pointless interviews, a bit of action, then a pointless interview at stage end through the driver's window and always zooming in to the car badge at the front.

This is from my childhood, used to watch these on TV with my dad. There's a certain charm about those old group A cars, love how they are so similar to the street versions, great times.

Always loved this event. Some serious hands have been on those roads down the years.
Belgium is a super place to go. Lovely people, beautiful towns and amazing history .

Liams car was possibly one of the finest looking Irish rally cars of all time

When rally cars were cool, rally drivers were crazy and rally events were truly petrolhead material.

Great coverage! Seeing Loix back then is so bizarre. It seems like he had an ounce of talent, yet ended up doing nothing with Ralliart, even on tarmac.

Freddie's issue was himself. Super fast, almost too fast. Fast Freddie, was always maximum attack. Showed promise but maybe in another Universe he'd be Champions, if he focused and didn't always to overdrive the car

Free entries were common on the 80s and 90s on a lot of non GB rallies, even for clubmen, start money as well.
