@@WestmeathAgriPhotography thanks , what I meant was why were they laying the sod down , but now I know it is to dry it out , ive only just found out how and why to make sod! don't do it here in the uk.
@@gabrielbrookesagri9752 so they put it on the ground whit a hopper after about 2-3 weeks they turn it by hand or whit a machine and another 2-3 weeks they would pick it up

shishtar hi as far as I know Ireland is the only country with bogs........possibly the Netherlands too
Daint forget Russia, They have bogs the size of the whole of IRL, Sweden has some too

Germany , north of England, Scotland...... we would have the largest bogs in Western Europe
Bogs are present in many countries. They were once lakes created mainly by glacial melt water in Ireland anyway. The lakes were colonised by reeds and other plant matter. You can see still see the layers of reeds in the lowest peat layer. The white layer below the peat is called marl which is made up of the lake deposits. You can see types of shell marine life in this layer. After the reeds, then trees colonised the areas, mainly Scots pine and oaks. Most these trees died off and sphagnum Moses moved in. The decomposition of this organic matter is what forms to be peat. 1-2mm of peat forms a year from sphagnum Moses.
Bogs are an incredible ecosystem and should not be destroyed like what is being done in this film, regardless for financial gain or “heritage”. Just because you grandfather did it doesn’t make it right. Bogs are a carbon sink. The drains in front of the cut bank drain high carbon content water into our waterways. This high carbon content water is being taken as a raw water source into treatment plants and reacting with chlorine to form THMs which are cancenagenic.
