Oh hello childhood. Lord, this was one of my all time favorite games and the music was definitely the best part. This cover gives me chills.
The Myst series has always had a lot of super imaginative sound design and art direction. Truly legendary stuff, even if it's now largely faded into a niche aging thing on the periphery of gaming. I think this cover is a fantastic take on the Myst opening theme.

Dude, perfect timing. Did you know Cyan is doing a Myst 25th anniversary Kickstarer? Not only that, but they've also set community goals. Flawless!!! Myst is my all-time favorite game series.
Most of my recollections of Myst are the heavy atmosphere of intrigue hanging over everything, and a silence made all the louder with ambient noise whilst walking around the island; I was completely unaware it even /had/ a musical theme.
Rad.
Yeah, aside from the opening sequence most of Myst's score is fairly subtle and unintrusive, it was designed to not get too repetitive, not call a lot of attention to itself, just subtly enhance the mood of various places and events in the game. Robyn Miller, when he composed that OST, actually considered not having a full soundtrack at all and embracing only 'endogenous' sound - sound that had a logical source in the game world [ie a music player in the game] but eventually concluded that he could create music and have it improve, not detract from, the mood of the game. Of course that subtle philosophy was pushed aside to some degree and in some places by Jack Wall's score for Myst 3 and 4, which were at times ambient but at others overtly bombastic and epic. Wall, of course, is now something of a legend in game composing, more so than when he did Myst 3's soundtrack. Think Starcraft 2, CSGO, Portal 2, etc. Those all had Wall doing the soundtracks.
And Robyn Miller... he composed the scores for Myst and Riven, which were excellent work, but was never able to really capitalize on that creative victory afterwards. He tried shifting to indie film stuff and it didn't do much for his career trajectory, the gaming world kind of forgot about him over time. He wound up coming back to Cyan, at least for some time, for their 'Myst-like' VR game 'Obduction' [released 2016]. He has a very quirky blog, going by the name Tinselman. He's an interesting guy. (But Cyan's history is full of interesting people)
MYST 3 and MYST 4 had some of the most iconic Orchestral + Choral main themes
@@matthewhornbostel9889 While Wall’s soundtracks were more bombastic than Robyn’s, Myst 3 and 4 were less about the intrigue as Myst and Riven, but more about these characters we’ve grown to love and what’ll happen next.

Yeeess!!! One of my favorite childhood games! Such incredible atmosphere. Nothing will ever match the lonely feeling you get when you play Myst alone in the dark.

@@nestor5316 I did a bit too, my dad got me Myst and Riven back in the day and that was great. I wound up not losing track though, gradually ended up a big fan of the series - the sort of fan who has read the three Myst novels, finished all the games in the standalone five-game series, and have made/am working on fan ages [worlds] for the Myst MMO Uru which the fans simply refuse to let die. The original Myst has been remade over and over, every 6-7 years basically - there's another one due on Steam sometime this year using the current Unreal Engine, basically it's like the release for Quest 2 VR but a bit more detailed to take advantage of wired/tethered VR processing advantages. Cyan's also working on some other VR adventure-game IPs, same broad genre but not tied to Myst canon, i.e. Obduction which has already released a while ago, then Firmament which comes out in 2022. They've also begun, to a limited degree, officially supporting a fan project to remake Riven in Unreal but that's further off at this time and lower on the current priority list for the studio. I'd expect that to be a 2024-2025 thing maybe and not any sooner.

I love Myst, but if you'd have taken this theme done in your style without my former knowledge of Myst and just played it for me, I wouldn't have even batted an eye if you'd told me it was the theme for a sci-fi suspense series similar to Twilight Zone or even Stranger Things. One of the most underappreciated themes in gaming I think.
