@@JosephE.Provencher I don't understand the dehumanizing. Just a punk rock kid who's always had LBGTQ friends, and most of my best friends learned english as their 2nd or 3rd language before moving to the states for many different reasons. My love for fellow humans will always beat my fear of people different than myself, and I'm always curious what I can learn from different people's experiences. We are just humans on a rock floating in space why do we need to single out minority groups instead of trying to do what we can to help each other?

As a trans man, if bathroom bans were adopted federally, then I would be forced into women's restrooms. People distinctly read me as male in real life. It would put me in danger, and trans men have already been violently attacked for using women's restrooms.

I sent an email begging her to fight this. I'm cis... but I have a loved one who is trans. She works in a blue collar factory job. She was being sexually harassed in the mens locker room. She reported it to HR and they got her into the womens locker room. But she is terrified that is going to change. That her job is going to decide that she doesn't get to use the womens locker room now. That she will go back to being in a room full of men who are harassing her and making her feel unsafe.
I really wish she would fight this. Mace is already talking about how this rule should be passed in ALL government buildings, even school. This isn't just about McBride using the bathroom... it's going to affect all trans people.
I am terrified for my loved one and I know my terror is only a fraction of hers. She deserves to be safe. She is just trying to work and provide for her and her wife and their kids. She deserves to feel safe.
I understand why McBride doesn't want to fight this... I get it. But it's not just about her.
But I don't know... maybe I'm being selfish in the name of those I care about.

For Sarah, it's a calculated move, because there are going to be even higher hills she may have to choose to die on. I remember when congress had to have a special vote to allow for an exception for long hair on the first native American congressman to take his seat. Unless things have changed, I can't imagine the battle she will have to fight to take her seat as herself in congress.

My late spouse, mother of four, was attacked in a public restroom for being a man in the ladies. She had had chemotherapy and lost all her hair. She was wearing a fedora hat. She was wearing her usual shopping outfit: t-shirt, shorts and flip-flop sandals. She also had had a nephrostomy, so she had two tubes from her kidneys that fed two plastic bags, which needed to be emptied periodically. She went into the ladies. She went into a stall and closed the door behind her. Then, standing and facing the toilet, she undid the valves on the urine bags and drained them into the toilet. She flushed, put herself back together and exited the stall. She was set upon by two very angry women who accused her, at full volume, of being in the wrong bathroom. She disabused them of their misapprehension. But you know, those women never apologized. They justified and tried to maintain that they didn't do anything wrong: it was her fault.
My mother taught me that when you make a mistake, you apologize and you examine what you did and figure out how not to do it again... evidently these women were raised differently.

I hate to generalize, but as a Mexican man, I will never understand my fellow ethnic minorities who stand for hate and stand against Trans people. Just a few short decades ago, WE were the groups who were being denied our basic human rights (there’s still a lot of institutional racism, but that’s another can of worms)
After our struggle, I don’t understand why somebody like me would want to pass that struggle on to anybody else. When we allow hate to win, we all lose regardless of whether our enemies realize it or not

I feel that there are some that believe that if they align with Republicans and agree with whomever Republicans currently decide to direct their irrational hatred towards (anyone but my group!), that they will then be left alone and seen as an ally of the monstrous Republicans who care more about scapegoating than actually governing. Truth is, that no marginalized group will ever be seen as an equal to the Republican base. Unless you check off every single box of being a white, christian, straight, male. Republicans absolutely believe that you are a second class citizen and they will go out of their way to create laws simply to make your lives more miserable to remind everyone else that they will never view you as equals.

I’m not the person to discredit anyone’s traumatic experiences but I know for a fact especially as a 2 time rape survivor , one by 8 men and the other by 1 man that survivors of any trauma have triggers especially when the person or persons around tend to be a reflection of your attacker. Sarah by far is NOT a trigger to her, so if she really was assaulted how come her trigger isn’t Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, Pete H, RFK jr or the person Greg Kelly on fox who was accused of rape that she just did an interview with.. why because I believe she is a liar who thinks she can fundraise more off of OTHER women’s experience with rape! "how many women were in the capitol in the 19th century?" ... when you strain so hard to play gotcha you don't notice the canyon of ignorance you're put on display.
      1. Like, on any given day or an estimate for the entire century?
      2. So, when people decided segregated facilites were necessary, you're suggesting they put in places where the people being segregated never were?
      3. On any given day, the answer is somewhere between dozens and thousands. People who worked there, people from the public observing proceedings of Congress (when either house is in session), individuals and groups lobbying for various causes. Photography has existed since the mid-19th century; it is a trivial effort to look up photos of people at the US Capitol for whatever time period since then. You'll see all kinds of people, in all kinds of numbers, in all parts of the building. It's a pretty big place; go check it out sometime.

As a trans woman, I can understand her choice, however I don't agree with that choice. Also the logic of her reasoning kind of disregards the trans voters she supposedly will be representing from her own district/state etc.
Give an inch the bigots will take a mile.
It becomes so tiresome to be part of such a small percentage of the population, we're talking .5% to 1.14% depending on your source. Yet we get constantly scapegoated, vilified and or turned into a political issue every campaign season and then subsequently swept under the rug when it's inconvenient to stand up to these bigots.

    • @CorwinFound
      @CorwinFound 3 дні тому +20

The low number that we represent isn't a bug. It's a feature. It's very hard to demonize a group of people that are our own coworkers, neighbors, family members, classmates etc. It's hard to stay a terrified, ignorant bigot when you _know_ the group being demonized. Jews represented just 0.2% of the German population before WWII.
I engage in traditional activism but my biggest contribution in my mind is being visibly and openly trans in public. I talk about it and bring it up when appropriate. I'm open to questions and discussion of trans issues with all sorts of cis folk. Because it's a lot harder to vote for someone openly forwarding anti-trans policies when they think, "Hm. I kinda like the rest of the platform but Corwin seems a nice fellow and he was just talking the other day about this. Corwin doesn't seem like he's trying to bring about the downfall of Western Civilization. Maybe I should think a bit more about this vote."
Of course I am personally trying to bring about the fall of Western Civilization. We have a meet up the first Thursday every month. But that's neither here nor there.

Thank you sir. It is SO refreshing to hear cis white, presumably straight men speaking out on behalf of trans people in general, and trans women specifically. I may not have known consciously that I am a woman for most of my life, but I also knew that I didn't exactly fit in with men either.
I was in trucking school 6 years ago, and I became friends with a cis lesbian. We were in the yard waiting on our turns to learn backing maneuvers when she asked me, "why on earth would you choose to become a woman in this society?" I told her that it was far easier for me to live as a woman in this society; with all that entails, than it was to live as a man that I knew I wasn't. She was shocked for a moment, and then said, "that makes so much sense. That would be like me trying to live as a straight woman, and pretend that I'm attracted to men."
I *LOVE* being a woman. My life never felt so right until I transitioned. I love being an inspiration to all women, trans and cis alike, when they see me driving my semi truck around the USA. I was inspired by women who were doing stereotypically male coded jobs like construction when I was a kid. I continue to be inspired when I see women out here conquering life, taking no shit from others, and loving themselves. It makes me want to be a better person.
Seeing trans men is equally inspiring because it reminds me that there is value in manhood. I don't want to seem like I *don't* value manhood, but for the majority of my life I thought that every man secretly wished that he was a woman because I couldn't imagine choosing to be a man if one could be a woman. 🤷‍♀️
I also want to visit the US Capital more than ever, because you better believe I'll be using the women's restrooms if I do. 🏳️‍⚧️💙🏳️‍⚧️

But the easiest way to understand that this is an issue fabricated by people who want to divide us is knowing trans people have been around forever. They have been using the bathroom of their actual gender for just as long, and there was never an issue of trans women or predatory men harming women in bathrooms or changing rooms. People can tell the difference between someone who is trans and pretending to be (it's usually incredibly obvious, as they don't bother to pretend to be serious). But it would be scary if that was happening. And sadly that's enough for a lot of people to look for a 'solution'. It's a mark of how completely we have been banished from human society: we literally don't have a pot to piss in. But if we go looking for one, people get mad at us, as if we're not just doing what everybody else gets to do.
A further note: here in Ireland, formally, legally, we trans people have had the right to use the correct restroom for 9 years now. In that time there has not been a single instance of a trans person causing trouble for anybody. Innocent until proven guilty? In the eyes of people like Nancy Mace, trans people are always guilty, no matter how long, no matter how many times we have established our innocence.

She is in so much danger , and look how she shines. It’s going to get worse for her. Call her office, send correspondence.

As a trans woman who has grown accustomed to women friends of mine just chatting with me through the stall walls, I was pleasantly surprised when a cis woman I briefly spoke to in the store of a truck stop continued to talk to me as we entered the restroom, through the stall wall, and as we washed our hands. The normalcy of it honestly made my day.
I also know that not only would I be extremely uncomfortable in a men's restroom, but so would pretty much every man. Unless it was at a concert, and the men's room line was shorter, in which case hopefully some kind man would do what I always did and stand guard outside my stall door. 😊

They taught me to be open and to talk with them about anything and everything. They shared personal stuff as well. They were my friends. And we cared about each other. It was a beautiful six months. We shopped for bras together. We went to parties and took surfing lessons.

Genitals shouldn't matter in a public restroom. If you're entering it for anything outside of the general peeing, pooping or washing your hands, then you probably shouldn't be entering one (and before anyone says anything, yes, I'd include cleaning a spill off your clothes, or "freshening up" in the vein of the "washing your hands" category)

Give the people that complain, and try to ban someone from using a public restroom, their own specially secured bathroom. Since they're so concerned, their special bathroom would require presenting their genitals for thorough inspection by three armed guards, and showing certified weekly "sex test" results from their pastor or priest, before they enter.
That way, no one is being harassed about using a public bathroom, and the people that have a problem can "really be sure" about everyone using their seperate facilities. Win-Win.

Since she has made the decision to not make an issue of this I assume it is based on a long record of fighting and putting herself out front for passage of LGBTQ+ protection laws that she believes this is not the best use of her position for such causes. Which is actually pretty smart, for it takes her out of being the "issue" as "how dare she insist on using the women's restroom"(*of course they'd misgender her as he) and keeps focus on Mace's, Greene's and Johnson's bigotry.

I nuked them because I was harassed by transphobes on the site following the election. I made some attempt to combat it, but it escalated to a series of disgusting messages being posted to my stories accusing me of being a cheese pizza enthusiast, amongst other shockingly untrue and horrific accusations. I understand wanting to fight, but having to delete over a hundred and fourty thousand words of stories (all backed up, but without the loving comments from my readers) to avoid them being tarnished was...distressing. Leaving from the mens restroom while looking as a woman would be incedibly awkward.
