Here are fruits of which you can't eat any other part of their plants: tomatoes, potatoes, cashew. Any part that is green, a fruit or exposed to sunlight of any nightshade is mostly really poisenous - with the exception of common tomato plants as the fruits of wild tomatoes are also toxic. That means that potato berries are also toxic.
@@FrankHarwaldthat isn't true. You can totally add fresh tomato leaves to food. It bumps up the fresh tomato flavor. There is not enough solanine in them to be poisonous. YT won't let me put links in comments but you can easily verify this yourself.
When I glanced at the title I kinda expected something maths based like the Fibonacci numbers showing up in radial symmetry of many fruits. I guess that's coming some day. Especially now Combo Class is officially in part a food channel. 🍎⭐🍏
I think it's worth elaborating just a bit about the health risks at play. Apart from allergies, the pesticides are *generally* the thing to worry about. In other words, wash your fruit well and you should be golden to eat 100% of it.
I did mention those on the disclaimer “do not copy” title card during the episode, although I didn’t mention that washing helps which is a good clarification
In a supermarket there was a warninng note that their orange peel is not for consumption because the pesticide gets into the deeper layers. Since then i was afraid to eat the orange peel even after washing.
Depends on the kind of pesticide or added hormone Some soak into the skin, pith, and fruit and washed or not, none of that food should be eaten by humans Grow your own food, you know what's in it
There's probably some associated health risks, but I always eat the whole peanut, shell and all, it's led to a happy life. I think Big Peanut wants you to avoid the shell because then you have to buy more peanuts.

The loquat one reminded me of kumquats, which also have edible peels. Kumquats are sweet and sour, but their intensity of both is more than the sauce "sweet and sour." I have actually eaten one before. It was given to me by a nutritionist.

Kiwi peel is genuinely good. It adds a lot of flavor to the fruit and is very soft compared to other peels. When I found about it about 5 years ago, I felt bad for all the kiwis I ate the wrong way.
orange peels are unironically good. chocolate covered orange peels are my favorite "gourmet" candies. you can also boil some* citrus peels with some sugar to turn it into gummy candies. *i think you can eat them all, but personally i've only tried the "grocery store" kinds (lime, lemon, orange, grapefruit).
Chocolate-covered orange peel is so good! Almost as good as chocolate-covered candied orange slices 🤤 my city's candy store makes both around Christmas.
Lemon peels are delicious. Though I admit, an acquired taste. I became obsessed briefly with the concept of a zero waste snack. As it annoyed me that when I would go hiking I would be left over with plastic or something that I had to throw away.
@@KingLarbear Leave only footprints, take only pictures. Reasons I do not throw away fruit peels: Environmental impact: Fruit peels take a considerable amount of time to decompose naturally. a lot of fruit with peels in the US are allowed to handled differently because the skin is not meant to be eaten. don't eat any skins or any fruits unless you wash them THOROUGHLY. imagine that literal horse poop has been rubbed on your fruit and then wiped off with a dry cloth, because that's exactly what happens.

🤣You're a wild and crazy guy but very knowledgeable!😂As for the edible citrus peel, well they do candied peels and some folks have been known to eat lime peels, lemon peels are dried and ground up, mixed with pepper, seriously though, if you want a vegan schnitzel(breadedsteak)remove the white pithe from a thick-skinned citrus, grapefruit usually but there are some thick-skinned oranges and lemons, makes a fine tasting schnitzel, accompanied with fries and a fresh garden salad of lettuce, avocado( without the skin, too gritty the texture😅) and tomatoe!😉👍
just cut the peels into thin strips and boil on low heat in a 1:1 mixture of sugar and water until they turn translucent. I'm talking volumetric 1:1 btw, like 1 cup water to 1 cup sugar.
WOW amazing! of these the only one i've explicitly eaten was the watermelon. Most of the time i'm at a party and there's watermelon slices i'll eat the peel. I'm definitely down to try a whole lemon snack though! Sour fruit candy but it's actual fruit!
Candied citrus peels and pickled watermelon rind are things I've had before and they're pretty good! When you think about it we as a society have a fairly narrow range of things that we regularly eat and cultivate when there's all sorts of edible things out there. A fun thing to do it to learn about your local plants so you can know which ones are edible. It's pretty surprising to learn that a lot of what we consider to be weeds are edible. If you do want to forage for plants though be careful where you do it because eating plants that have had pesticides and chemicals sprayed on them is not a good idea.
Watermelon peel, orange peel, and a lot of the thick skinned ones are just bitter and unpleasant to eat. Like sure, you _could_ take bites out of an orange like it's an apple. But I'd probably throw up doing that, so maybe it isn't worth it
I don’t see how that video is related to this video in any way so I’m not sure what you mean, but I have watched many of that guy’s videos and do think he’s hilarious

Not exactly the same, but a good stand-by (for practicing on) when you can't get the real thing. Gotta love the feeling of those prickly hairs on the lips and on the tongue! 😋
Most fruit now days is coated with wax, so not as nutritious or edible as in the past. Also, many seeds are poisonous, so eating a few *may* be ok, but a large number can kill you.
The taste is the biggest turn-off for me. To get an idea of things I think taste good: I like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, all "greens" (spinach, kale, etc). But I cannot stand the taste of orange rind (to the point I don't like orange marmalade) or watermelon peel. Banana intrigues me, though.
4 years ago someone told me that kiwi peels are eatable, ever since then I eat them with peel, also: when I was around 12 years old I learned that potato skins are eatable, and I think it actually tastes better with skin, also a lot of nutriens are missing in peeled potatos, also a waste of time to peel them tbh, idk how this could ever be a thing to peel potatos lol
I'll *sometimes* peel my potatoes, particularly if i'm cooking them in a way that they'll cause major issues, like for fries where they'll get burnt before the rest of the fry gets crispy, but yeah generally speaking i love a well seasoned potato skin, oiled and baked to a crispy, crunchy finish. Really makes the difference between an okay and an amazing baked potato.
I did study abroad in England many years ago. One thing a professor said was the difference between the English and the Irish -- to explain why the Irish were tougher -- is because the Irish eat their potatoes "in their jackets". That is, the English peel their potatoes and the Irish don't! 😊
Potatoes (and tomatoes) are members of the Nightshade family, and can have toxins in the potato skin (especially in older, "overripe" potatoes - a dark green layer under the peel is a potential danger sign (a little light green is probably safe)). Usually the amount of the toxins is low enough to be safe for human consumption (especially younger / fresher potatoes are basically always safe to eat, even raw), and cooking also destroys the toxins for added safety, but there have been instances of potato skins causing harm. In tomatoes' case, the fruit never contains the toxins, the toxins only exist in the roots & leaves (and are still much lower than in Nightshade proper).
I heard that many peels are just not RECOMMENDED for eating if you can't tell how the fruits were grown, because some vendors apparently inject the peel with some chemicals that keeps the fruit from rotting too fast. And that chemical often makes the peel actually dangerous to eat. Again, just what I heard, I'm sure it only holds true in some cases.
Edible is not equal to desirable. As an add on, I have to peel ALL fruits and vegetables, and remove seeds, and cook well. All because of Crohn's Disease.
They mostly are, but if you ate hundreds of apple cores in one day it would be poisonous since the seeds do have a small amount amount of cyanide. I made a previous snack break episode about apples that includes that topic
