  • As I type this, I realize Balaji Manohar and I have known each other for 20 years.
Bala and I started out as classmates, then friends, co-actors in theatre and members of the same theatre groups, before we became confidants, 'just friends', lovers, a couple and now colleagues as we work on many film and theatre projects together. It has been a fun, adventurous ride with startling moments of clarity amidst mountains of chaos and rivers of angst. More than the love, I think it's the differences and disagreements that have sustained our relationship. Thank you Bala. For living with me and loving me, despite the challenge that poses!
While Bala and I did romance each other, we never dated. Never went out on dinners or held hands in dark movie halls. It was always endless hours spent chatting in my house, in my room and on the phone. We did that, thanks to my generous uninterfering parents, for years before we tied the knot. On one such evening, while I chatted incessantly Bala was uncharacteristically quite. We were both munching on JoLa - roasted corn cobs. When I asked him why he wasn't saying much, he handed me the corn he was chewing. He had carefully bitten away the rest of the corn to reveal the letters I L U, an acronym for I love you, on it. At that moment, I realized that I am not to expect the usual cliched candle-lit-dinner kind of romance from him. He is an original. He has always been.
To celebrate our 8th anniversary this year, I wanted to make a love letter in moving images for him! This is the first anniversary we have been away from each other. Bala is away in New York shooting a film and I in my hometown Bangalore. So I wanted to make something fun yet heartfelt for him. Hence the song. One of his favorites.
Thank you Satish VM for being enthusiastic as always. No matter how silly or small the project, you jump in. Your attitude is much appreciated. Thank you for your camera work, help with the visual effects and making me more comfortable with After Effects.
This effort would have been a complete failure if the props were not handled right by the behind-the-scenes crew. So, thank you Priyanka Nagesh and Sai Prakash for offering to help and being part of this fun and craziness. This video was made spontaneously with little planning and no rehearsals, and yet you guys were bang on. Thank you for catching all that I threw off the frame - beer bottles, umbrella, et all and being such top quality sports.
Came up with a simple concept of shooting a song as a static one-shot but making it come alive with props that come and leave the frame. I used Adobe Premier Pro CC, ramped up my After Effects skills and tried new stuff on Red Giant's Color Suite and Effects Suite. So as an editor, the making of this for me was a riot.
Yes, Bala used just corn to say his piece. Being a gadget and tech babe I need much much more. :-) Haha.
