    It's a very nice proposition from Mitsubishi on the price side. The second gen's front was much nicer and distinctive. I believe this one looks also like the new Pathfinder in some design cues: more SUV and less truck. That said, altogether it seems to be a better vehicule. This segment is a very competitive one...

    Ok, we have just put 4700 miles on our 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander ES 4 cyl 2WD. We had an 8 passenger 2006 Sienna Van, the underside became
    damaged. But I wasn't quite ready to get back into another Sienna
    after rack and pinion steering leak at 50K miles, an electric door hinge problem, 19 mpg avg, and chronic edge wear of the tires. It would only
    like Michelins, it chewed thru other brands and alignment was spot on. We also looked a Subaru, and the Highlander and Honda stuff.
    The 2016 Outlander was the ONLY vehicle which had 3rd row seating, a decent tow capacity for small trailers, 30 mpg or better gas milage.
    Outstanding warranty. This CVT transmission is very smooth. This has a timing chain engine instead of a timing belt engine.
    ( Visit www.agcoauto.com/content/List_Of_Interference_Engines ) Not buying any more vehicles with timing belts.
    This 2016 is much improved over the 2015, as I drove a 2015 model.
    Also I wanted higher ground clearance this time. The Sienna was too low for ground clearance.
    I just completed a 900 mile trip LOADED. We averaged 32 mpg. I filled the tank twice. My wife likes it, she won't let me drive it much.
    I REALLY started looking at these Outlanders when I found out my father-in-law in Mexico actually had a Mitsubishi for the last 11 years.
    They beat theirs and abuse it. They drive theirs all over the country. He told my wife he would buy another.
    I know he is hard on vehicles. That REALLY , and I mean REALLY got my attention. My wifes relative down their
    owns a Meineke repair franchise. He says the Mistubishi vehicles without the turbo are
    reliable. Plus I never remembered seeing a Mitsubishi broken down on the side of the road, anywhere. I'm always looking for
    what vehicles are being towed by a rope or on the back of a tow truck.
    I just saw my father-in-laws Mitsubishi last week, it is an Outlander but much smaller.
    They also have a Sienna Van the Mexico version.
    Our Outlander is comfortable for trips, and I really like the 100,000 mile warranty on the drive train.
    Also the factory includes 5 years of roadside assistance / towing !!
    So, this vehicle fits my needs and was $10,000 less (at least) than a Sienna. No problem, I just had U Haul install a hitch for about $380.
    I bought a slide-in cargo basket for trips & bulky stuff. Probably will save $1300 a year in fuel cost over the Sienna.
    The negative: Headroom could be 8 inches higher, especially in the rear. Our model has a keyed ignition (I will never buy keyless ignition)
    the rear cargo lacks a hook to hang clothes, we wish there was a 12v receptacle in the cargo area.
    At night, the door switches are poorly lighted. Also the ES lacks a roof rack. Really wanted a roof rack.

      The only reason they don't sell is because the discontinuation of really good cars like the Evo, Eclipse, Montero .etc

    It seems like Mitsubishi is saying, "Hey guys, we don't have everything the other guys do, nor advanced and fancy engines but its got a great warranty and its much cheaper"
    Nothing wrong with going the value route as long as safety doesn't get left behind.

    Tested this one but feel its far from the handling abilities of the new Forester. Both SUV are about similar size, but the Forester handling is some much car-like that it drives like a "smaller" agile vehicle. on the other hand the outlander still feel like a floaty truck. You really could pick up the difference along curvy roads and higher speeds.

    Hey Zack how we are trying to decide if go for the outlander or the pathfinder, the only thing I'm worried about the Outlander is its power, did you feel that the v6 has enough power going uphills and mountains? We are only a few hours from Banff and Jasper so.

    I have a 08 outlander the outlander and Subaru forester have more ground clearence then most cuv's you won't complain about body roll when u take the kids on a fishing trip for the weekend and accidentally end up on a side road full of rocks and ruts like I did if I was driving anything lower I would have bottomed out or have to go all the way back in reverse

    Small crossover? Edgy? Sells well? The way rear seat folds is quite awful. What about the cavity for the ignition lock without the lock? And CVT mimicking geared transmission is pure idiocy - the whole point of CVT is to stay in the optimal RPM range.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 років тому

      ***** I beg to differ. Look at the Forester, Santa Fe and Escape; all of them get very modern 2.0 4cylinder, Dual VVT, Direct Injection and Turbocharged powerplants.

    • @zivan56
      @zivan56 9 років тому +2

      +Trades46 good luck with that not breaking down before more than a few years. My 08 Outlander V6, on the other hand, is non interference, non, turbo, non direct injection...in other words, bulletproof. I am not a fan of the revision to make this engine higher compression and interference, they basically lost me after that.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 9 років тому

      zivan56
      Perhaps, but being ancient & having good reliability aren't exactly causal relationships. Just because the technology is newer & unproven doesn't necessarily mean it will be unreliable.
      Still I still hate the 6B31 used in the Outlander. My father's drink as much as his old 1999 Sienna with a 4spd auto & non-VVT design. Also from driving a good deal of V6 motors, the Mitsubishi V6 just sounds plain rough & unrefined at any rpms.

    • @zivan56
      @zivan56 9 років тому +3

      +Trades46 the 6B31 sounds like any SOHC engine. You are probably used to DOHC engines, which have a distinct sound. The engine sound is quite nice I find, it sounds like a truck engine.
      If you look at any long term tests of even the latest Ford F150 ecoboosts you will see the turbo will frequently go, especially if used under heavy load. This is common for most turbo engines, as the turbo has a relatively short life, as does the engine block due to the high compression and stress placed on it.
      You know how many times I've had to do anything on the Outlanders engine or replace a part? Absolutely 0. The fuel economy is not really a big deal for me as long as it doesn't leave me stranded on a mountain pass because the turbo blew.

    How do these CVT's do for long term reliability?

    • @haroldthetubeman711
      @haroldthetubeman711 9 років тому

      Dee Jay Yeah, how is CVT overall reliability ? I hear no transmission fluid changes ?

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 років тому

      Dee Jay I work at a dealer and we see tons of CVT's past 200k km with the original fluid. It all depends what year and what make. Avoid all CVT's until around 2010-2011. That is when they became more popular, parts became cheaper and the transmission became more robust. Nissan and Honda seem to make the most reliable CVT.

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 років тому

      ***** This is just what I hear. A ton our our dealer techs say that Nissan is best.

    • @USFanLovesMinHo
      @USFanLovesMinHo 9 років тому

      Brandon Friesen My sister and her husband have always bought Nissan and I really don't know why. After their vehicles passed 100,000 miles, they had problems and oil leaks. I am specifically talking about the Altima, Xterra and Frontier which they own/owned. I don't see Nissan as being reliable for the long haul.

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 років тому

      USFanLovesMinHo The Altima is the only one of those that actually have a CVT. I'm just talking transmission reliability. Not the car as a whole. If I would buy a car for reliability, it'd be a Toyota. I would say Honda but as the miles get past 80k, they burnt oil and the engine wear increases like you wouldn't believe. Toyotas generally don't burn oil and they just don't seem to wear out. Nissans are probably the least reliable Japanese car brand next to Mazda.
