I wonder if Donovan is singing about his own relationship from his GIRLFRIEND'S point of view. He's the musician. Musicians have to travel and reach as many fans in as many places as possible to gathering a following. Read this verse: "This kind of town, you just leave behind. And you don't know it yet, but you won't come back. And i ain't going nowhere, and you know that". Maybe his girlfriend doesn't want to leave her hometown even if it means breaking up with him. She tells him to keep his bags packed and the car running because he's always traveling and comes home for only a few weeks or even days at a time. Maybe this song is told from her point of view as his way of telling her that he understands and that he can't argue with her because she's right... She's "just saving [them] some trouble somewhere down the line".
