This type of experimentation can be very fun! Decades ago, I connected an audio modulation circuit to the HW16 CW key and generated a very bad AM modulated signal which I used to talk to a cross-town friend for a few minutes. I imagine that the signal was very distorted, but my friend said it was fully understandable.

Buy a 1MHz crystal oscillator module, square 4 pin type. Connect pin 3 to an aerial, pin2 to earth negative. and pin 1 to the output of a small audio amp with around 5 volts on its output.

The DSB sounds rough because the radio's oscillators are shifting frequency slightly as the DC load from modulation varies. Not really fixable without improving voltage regulation to oscillators. Given the radio is primarily for FM, the designer is unlikely to address this but you could Hayden

i opened mine up and soldered a jumper across pin L4 and into Z8 and now i am getting better modulation across both FM and AM frequencies, all the way through air bands, HAM, CB and everything else is coming in crystal clear now. took me a while to figure out that L4 is the loopback for the 5V DC output but once I figured that out on my scope, i was able to solder them up and fixed this little radio, its very good now.

As a matter of trivia I misplaced my original Baofeng cable and bought another, on Windows 11 it identifies the chipset as CH340, and sees it as a Chinese device. I use this computer for many strange things, such as Arduino and Pi Pico programming so it may be using a driver loaded for one of those. The cable looks like the original Baofeng cable but includes the word "traline" in the Amazon description.
I have the latest Egzumer firmware on my Quansheng, no multimode transmit but only receive. A kind of handy monitor receiver but with limitations. It is amazing what the chipsets are capable of. FWIW initially my radio would not communicate with the computer, some others have seen the same behaviour and found you may need to squeeze the connector very tightly into the radio, to the point where you think the radio is going to be damaged. It may be the moulding quality of the connector as since then mine has been OK.

Thanks for this comment, you saved my day. I had problems having K5(8) communicate with the computer. I tried to push it in with force, but no success, it was really lose and could been detached really easily. I thought that I had wrong connector, because it was so lose and worked fine with other Baofeng radio. After reading this comment I used more force and figured out that the culprit was lower bigger pin that had to be pushed in further.

Got mine Yesterday just done the Firmware update as instructions (using my Baofeng UV cable) via browser SO much easier than flashing manual .bin files. Works a treat albeit cannot see setting for DSB in menu for some reason BUT it will now go down to 27 MHz band so I can sit and listen on 27.555 for any DX ing just pity it can’t TX only RX but what a versatile bit of kit. I’ve used CHIRP to cut n paste my saved repeater channels into its memory and its superb. The sensitivity in ssb mode prevents clarity when two transceivers are that close. I seen another video where the spectral IMD was not that great on those quanshengs on hf, cause they lack filtering. The scope and the wideband receive would be a plus though tracking radiated signals. I have a HF transceiver and a device in the house turnson intermittently and cause serious noise up my hf receive. A walkie talkie like this would be handy tracing problems like this.

@@HamRadioDX while on the subject of the K5(8), have you seen the 18650 battery 3D prints?
I have one printing right now, what i really need is the same for my Baofeng UV-82 radios as their battery's are very tired, only paid files to print those but the K5(8) files are free as are the files to print Baofeng UV-5R 18650 packs.
2200mah 18650's will last as long as the fat packs you can buy, im gonna look at modifying the K5(8) design to take 5000mah 21700 cells, the radio has just enough room width and length wise.
