- I finally got a new Miter saw, The Bosch CM10GD 10” Dual-Bevel Glide Saw. It’s a great saw right out of the box, but just to customize it a bit I’m adding a Zero Clearance Insert.

I’ve taken the opportunity while waiting for my surgery to upgrade my power tools. I currently have a delta 36-255L dual laser 12” miter & porter cable job site table saw. So far I’ve Ordered and accepted delivery of a Delta Gen 2 12” Cruzer miter saw. Looking forward to making a zero clearance insert for & using it when Im cleared by my surgeon. I don’t know what they were thinking when designing the Grand Canyon of gaps in the stock insert. In the mean time, I’m thoroughly enjoying binge watching your channels 😊
What a simple and effective idea. Loved the use of the tape to speed up the duplication process.
Jon I've had my Bosch CM12SD for about a year. You are very lucky to have your saw arrive square. It took me a great deal of patience trying to get the saw to square. The action of the saw once squared is great. Though I have 2 chief complaints that Bosch needs to work on. 1. Dust collection. When connecting my Dust Deputy to the sawdust port, it only gets about half the amount of sawdust. The catch behind the saw is too small in my opinion to effectively collect sawdust. There is a video out there to make a larger catch. I am going to build an enclosure like what @DIYMontreal did with hers. 2. No laser. I know a Zero Clearance Insert sort of resolves the need for a laser. However; I just feel the 2 combined together would make for more accurate cuts. The pros far outweigh the cons with this saw. Though I do regret getting rid of my Radial Arm Saw. While the Bosch can do this, I found keeping the RAS square a great deal simpler. Plus the vast majority of the cuts I've done so far really only call for a RAS/Chop saw. I built the Miter Saw Station that @FixThisBuildThat made. The modification I made to this is putting the CMS on a cart I can wheel in our out. This allows me to leverage the Miter station for a RAS or even a plainer. Giving me a great deal of surface to work with.
An OEM insert usually allows for zero clearance; the sloted screw holes in the insert allow you to move the insert inward to where they almost touch, then with a plunge of the blade you have a zero clearance cut. To do a bevel cut, loosen the screw, open the throat, make the bevel cut and then close up the insert again to go back to zero clearance. Thanks for your time
I’ve recently purchased a new Dewalt Flexvolt sliding mitre saw. Making test cuts, there appears to be no issue with tear out at all. I’ve tested the saw using pine, man made boards and oak. Can I suggest that tear out could be the result of a blunt blade and/or rushing the cut. I can appreciate that using a hardwood insert can really “sex up” the look of the saw but I don’t see any real practical advantage to making one. Of course, the disadvantage arises when you need to tilt the saw for angled cuts. You’d need to remove it every time to avoid damaging the insert. I did make up an auxiliary jig from MDF that can be attached to the fence. Hence, small off cuts can’t snag the blade or be thrown around the workshop. However, I fully accept it’s a case of each to his own.
I have the same model and all I did to get zero clearance is to adjust insert itself. Works perfect. Thanks for reminding me.
Jon,
Really like your videos and the no-nonsense approach to wood working. Keep up the good work. All the best from UK
Finally you got the saw. its a nice one. Cuts are straight for the most part and it looks like you don't have to buff a lot.
I have the 12" version of your saw and I am going to make a insert like yours! Thank you so much for showing us how to do it!
Have had this for 4 + years. I do high end finish carpentry and with the Freud LU91R012 12-Inch 72 Tooth ATB Thin Kerf Sliding Miter Saw Blade it works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe . I've had many fellow carpenters make positive comments after borrowing it. Pluses; Sturdy fence, great capacity, low deflection, work lights (Not a gimmick), great dust collection, still as smooth as when i first got it, easy tilt. Minuses ; my digital readout is not accurate(don't use it anyway), heavy.
The dream miter saw. Awesome !!
This is the 3rd person I have seen on you tube that have got the same saw and been very happy with it except for the inset plate, Izzy sorted his with some tape that gives a zero gap but I like your method better. I hope you get lots of use and accurate cuts.
I used the tape as well on my miter and take saw. Just quick and easy.
John Fithian-Franks Hi
Bam!!! Bought the pants, bought the saw, built the insert!
Great videos!
Excellent, now I know how to do it on my saw. Never thought of using tape to mark out the screw holes. Thank you.
I don't have any background in woodworking and most of my tools are recent purchases as a newish homeowner doing DIY stuff. I was just looking for info on the Bosch miter saw since coming to regret the cheap Ryobi I bought, and I learned so much more by accident from watching your video! LOL! Thanks for this!
Eric R. Shelton Lol. I want to replace my ryobi too. It's not terrible, but it is just a chop saw.
Despicably Irascible Rapscallion every time I swing the Ryobi blade 45 degrees so it's no longer perpendicular to the horizon, there's enough play in it that my cuts are never square. Huge disappointment. Time to invest in something higher quality.
Eric R. Shelton I've heard some complaints about repeatability on the Bosch too, but apparently it's quite easy to tune in.

I wish there was a website that did independent reviews of these tools. I love youtube, but it's hard to tell how unbiased some of these guys are.
I love my Bosch 4310 dual bevel, it's a slider one, but works great. I was thinking about a zero clearance for it and this video is all I needed to get going on making one. I hope you like the saw, I had to adjust mine a little to get a perfect 90 degree cut and it works sooo good!!
Great job. You make it look simple and honestly just in this video you have helped me see how easy it really is to fix a few problems that I am having... I look forward to seeing more of your video's. Cheers from Australia
I have been drooling over this saw for 3 or 4 months know time to put a budget in place to buy one.
Good workmanship Jon, your projects & recommendations are very valuable
Great idea for the zero clearance insert. John Heisz has a solution to the sacrificial fence problem.
Jon you are going to like the Bosch.
Nice to see your subscriber numbers climb. I used to wonder why it was so low, great content, thanks.
Jon, great timing. I'm in the process of making my miter station using this saw. I'll make a pattern for this so I can make multiple inserts for easy replacement. .....Scott
You getting one of those too. Dang !! I have a station all designed out in sketchup from months ago. Just havent gotten the materials yet. Looking forward to your build. If you do video of it.
+David Bishop video may be latter but I am posting pictures on my FB page The 2 Car Garage Shop
Looks great Jon. Glad you like the saw. I made a similar insert to my saw only out of mdf. But I like the instruction you gave in making it out of ply.
Thanks Jon. This inspires me to make a zero clearance insert for my DeWalt. Congratulations on 200k subscribers.
Best a Bosch I’ve ever had
Simple, practical, do-able. Thanks...and the sacrificial fence - now I understand it’s value.
Jon sir from many vidio demosration u have given perfect idia for precise cuting i rajesh windo maker from mumbai
My mitre saw has a stop I can adjust that lets me adjust the depth the blade will drop. Used it a few days ago to cut cross halving joints in some 2x4
God job Jon. Hey Jon I think you need to join those four guys from This old house, I think you and Tom Silva will make grate projects together like having the dream team....lol...keep up the good work...all the way from Dallas TX...
My 11 year old daughter has the 10" saw. I got the 12" version. She seems to like it.
200,000 subscribers!!!! nice job! great video, I now use a sacrificial fence well all the time now too thanks to you
Great idea Jon. I need to try that.
Really nice method you used to make that insert, Jon. I've had that on my list for my Dewalt for some time and I think I'll make one now.
I just watched this video (thumbs up), noticed the date, and am still wondering how come i just saw this saw a few months ago :-D the saw looks awesome from more than one side, the cuts out of the box seem to be top notch. fingers crossed!
Keep it up!
I'm really liking that new saw man it's real great and it's definitely a lot better than my old Dewalt saw where it's just not in such good condition! I've be looking for a new one for about 2 months now and so far i haven't seen something like that so if you would, please tell where you got it and I'll see if i can go out and find it for myself! I also liked ur video in general it was very helpful for my son because he is just getting into all this stuff and he said he would like it if you would give him a full demonstration on how to find the right tools and know how to take measurements! I'm completely ok with it. I hope you see this and have a great day thank you for much for all your help and demonstrations!
Nice saw. Congrats on hitting 200k! Well deserved Jon.
A great idea, and so much more easy to cut straight. Thanks
That is one bouncy bandsaw!
Heya Jon, I just gave this a try. It's working great, love it! Thanks for all your videos!
Great saw John wish I could afford one
Have the 12" and love it.
Thanks! Made one for my old delta, nice clean cuts now!
That was well timed I was playing with one of those at the tool shop yesterday. Might just push me over the edge to upgrade.
Me too but the relative cost in the UK is way higher than the US.
I know what you mean they are close to $1000 here, which at the current exchange rate is about 50 pounds :)
LOL. Hope all's well with you. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you. Cheers, Gary
Thanks Gary hope to be back in front of the camera this weekend.
haha it didnt even dawn on me to use tape. i was making an insert yesterday out of some old oak i had. ran it through the drum sander and had everything perfect till i grabbed the wrong bit and punched a hole way to large throughthe insert. thank you so much for restarting my brain on this
Very nice job!
Wow what a great tip for accuracy thank you sir 🙏.
congrats on 200k Jon!
Thanks for the video on the Zero insert I am going to make a few.
I like the tape trick to make your insert template.
Nice video and instructional Jon.
Great idea. I wonder if it would work like that for my table saw?? I will look and thanks.
Congrats on 200k and the saw!!
I would switch the zeroC out with the stock insert to do bevel cuts... that way you won't need to make new ones.
looks like a nice saw
Smart work
nice saw, Jon! very envious!
I have the Bosch 4410L sliding mitre/bevel saw and find when cutting off small ends these saws fire the cut off ends like bullets. Once a piece embedded itself into the drywall. To much space with the original fence that allows these small pieces to get caught by the blade effecting them out the back.
Nice saw! Do you have a video on how to adjust the saw if it is not cutting square? Thanks!
Excellent video 👍. Can u guide is this best product for photo frame cutting ? Or Manual pedal Guillotine ?
Good Video
Sold my 10" King Canada
and Got a USED RIDGID R4221 for my Butget
Pretty sweet.
what's the purpose of a zero clearance? thanks for the videos! I learn something new each video!
If you rewatch the very beginning of the video, he explains it. Basically, it helps with tear-out and makes it easier to line up a cut.
I drilled two countersinks for the nipples. Found that it helped in stability.
I have this same saw and i love it.
Jason Zielke
Just an idea.
Why not make a left and a right hand fence for your mitre cuts, using the the one required.
That way you wouldn’t have to make a new one every few weeks.
Have you seen Fast Cap's pvc zero clearance tape that you put over the slot? It's just $4 or $5 for five strips.
Great insert Jon, I just got the same saw for father's day (I know, such a great son I have). I'll be following your lead. BTW what a great saw hah?!
Very well done! I have the 12" Dual-Bevel Glide Saw. I can't resist asking .. how much to have you make ship some inserts to Canada?
Hey Jon, great job. I liked your idea. I think I will make one Zero Clearance for my Dewalt MiterSaw. I need to make one Zero Clearance for my TableSaw too.
Congrats.
ZACCARO
Felicidades, una sierra muy bonita
Hi Jon. If you do a follow -up Q&A type video to this, I wondered if you could briefly discuss your chop saw stroke technique?
Ive watched you many times score the material pulling the blade towards you and then plunging the blade and pushing away from you back through the material.
I have tried your method and never seem to get perfect results on deeper/longer cuts especially.
My Metabo saw is the only one i have ever owned and it has the slightest bit of play on the blade/motor head (though I have heard this is standard on most...if not all sliding mitre saws). So through adjustments and trial & error in cutting technique I can now achieve perfectly square cuts.....But this was something that took me some time to achieve. I just wondered if other people might be interested in this issue and you could share your thoughts? Thanks Jon.
I believe he does this for reducing tear out. It is the same stroke that I use. You have to imagine the angle at which the teeth are exiting the wood. The higher the angle of exit the more tear out.
Hi Jon. I heard that many people complain about inefficiency of the dust collection on this beauty. What is your view about that? Thanks for the upload.
Great video. What do you think about using a sacrificial board instead of the custom insert? I use a lot of bevels (and wouldn't want to replace the insert frequently) and wouldn't need the benefits of the custom insert for many cuts.
Nice work on the insert. Why not make it easy to repair instead of making a new one. Cut a dado down the center of your insert 3/4" wide by 1/8" deep. Rip a bunch of 1/8" masonite to fit. Stick a piece in the dado with double sided tape or a few dabs of hot glue. When it gets chewed up, slap a new piece in.
What was the point ? When you cut the 45s it will open up the same ?
Nice one! Thanks!
I have the same saw but it seems that the base is getting tight and harder to move. Any suggestions on how too free it up?
Thank you
If I ever find a Bosch that sets up accurately I'll definitely be making a cpl of these. Ive set up/ adjusted etc..2 of these saws now and both have the same end result. One side of the blade the square sits 90 and the other side is off by almost a 1/16th (it tapers) I've adjusted all the detents and etc..but still no luck and the 45 degree miter is even worse! Very disappointed for the amnt of money this saw is and time I've waisted.any suggestions on why that is and I got a good Freud blade on it too. Maybe I should try the dewalt? But that space saver is crucial for me which is why I gave it a 2nd chance.
I’m not that happy with this saw either it’s developed a bit of a blade deflection so now I generally use it for cutting boards to a rough length and then use my crosscut sled.. works ok for boards 4” or less
@@JonPetersArtHome yea I also noticed that if I cut a 1x6 i have the same problem with deflection. I still have time to return it I think that's what I'm going to do. Sad to say. Cuz what's the point of having it if it doesnt cut accurate 45s,90s, and deflects over 4" I like the space saving but not for 650$ plus 60 for the blade. I'm thinking dewalt 10" or the Hitachi wish I could afford the festool maybe one of these yrs.lol thanks for the feedback Jon look fwd to seeing ur stuff in the maker mob👍👍🍻
I got this saw and i found the middle of the base was higher of the sides with a about up to 1/2 of cm, I got in touch with bosch, their answer was - it's not approved for warranty, because it's in the factories margin of error, as this saw is made for to take to job sites, and not for fine woodworking. What it ended up to be the problem that the base got a crack, so basically this saw is not made for job sides due too poor material quality.
congrats 200k
GREAT video, I am going to do this! Who even needs a laser anyhow?
Great info, thank you.
What blades are you using on your saws? and how often would you change them?
Wanted one of these until I realized you have to swap them out to cut a bevel and I use my saw to cut bevels all the time so it would be a pain the arse lol
Jon,👍!
But why?
I own the same Bosch Professional but then the new 18v but if you look good you see that you don't have to make a zero clearance insert because with this saw you can adjust the original inserts to zero....
🤔🤔
Jon how are you enjoying the Bosch sliding miter saw? Holding up well and staying accurate?
great video, Jon, as always. I noticed that you sometimes cut on the pull stroke. Do you need a special blade for that?
good job ,just need paint red the little table
Gran idea, saludos desde México 🇲🇽
Does it take dado stack? Wouldn't that be cool?
How deep is your work bench that the saw is on? I have a two foot work bench and wondering how well the saw will fit on it, or how far it would stick out in the front?
Nice video Jon, and I notice you have crossed the 200K mark in subscribers. Congratulations, and how did you convince Mama to let you buy a new saw w/o the other being dead? lol haha
God Bless my friend
very good...!
Thanks!
3:03, ha, cool trick!
Being in such a tight shop, have you though of making the extension table for the Bosch into a fold down leaf?
Muy buena idea felicitaciones
It's a great tool … but $500 more expensive than the professional miter saw that I bought for a price.
Otherwise I would have bought this one : the zero clearance ability is certainly an excellent point.
