‘White saviours’: Outdated and perpetuating stereotypes?

- British MP David Lammy had accused Dooley of perpetuating “tired and unhelpful stereotypes” about Africa after she travelled to Uganda for an upcoming Comic Relief documentary.
Sending western celebrities to developing countries to raise awareness and raise money for projects isn’t a new phenomenon but is this practice perpetuating a white saviour narrative like Lammy suggests or should it just be taken for what it is, supporting a good cause?

Even before i watch this, the table already looks biased, is there only one African on this table? and then i read the comments.......... First of all majority of these donations remain in the offices, it doesn't even get to the people so please stop doing this. if you call funding employees' SUV's and 5 star lifestyles "doing what it's supposed to do" then we are doomed

You never even allowed lloyd finish his sentences 🤷🏿♀️ stop painting Africa in the manner you paint it,I've seen more homeless folks in Europe than I've seen in Nigeria for instance. I don't see you guys paint Europe as a continent of homelessness. Keep your help to yourselves and Africa should also sit up and be wiser. Yeah, I found it very hard to get beyond the first few minutes. The host did not seem to interrupt anyone else as much as he was interrupting the first person. It was like he had already made up his mind and that's not how a host of a discussion should be. Aaargh!
Thank you. The host was annoying me so much. Right from the get go he constantly interrupting him. Hardly allowed him to finish what he was saying. He was so adamant on getting his opinion out which was clearly against most of what the African man was saying.
Agreed. How frustrated Lloyd must have been after the discussion. I mean, how very dare Africa be so ungrateful for British help! The truth is, none of these charities should even exist. We need to tackle the REAL reasons why so many parts of Africa are impoverished. The machinations of neo-colonial vampire corporations operating under the radar. Not to mention the World Bank and IMF ball and chain of crippling debt. Those two white male egos weren't about to let a black man speak his mind uninterrupted either. Jesus, they even let the two women talk without shutting them down. That spoke volumes about the power dynamics round that table. Dreadful.
white people are professionals at imposing their beliefs onto others. It all stems from racism and the belief that they are superior and therefore; they have the right to invade and dictate other countries.

Do your homework. Africa is rich and needs to rise against the French and British people to get their money running back into Africa. Unbelievable.

Insufferable. What a horrid journalist/host. As a host, he should be impartial and fair not cutting certain guests off whilst outwardly agreeing with others. Disappointing
Charity given to africa by white supremacy are used to keep african dependent. If african are involved when you give charity they will become independent. If you will allow the african to speak without cutting him off you will understand. But you are very rude and so arrogant to talk over him he can barely get a word in and that's a big problem. You can help african by working with africans not by dictating to them. African will become independent only if the africans are not catering to the whites that gave the charity. This game of using charity for divide and conquer is getting old if you want to help africa help or get out of the way. Soon African American will be returning to the motherland to help her rebuilt and I hope will show us more respect when we return to Africa.
It was strategic to have the black man outnumbered and his mind state overwhelmed with opposition. When he makes a good point and shuts up one land shark the other will pick up the discussion with a different direction or try to save the previous land shark. They are quite tactical.

I'm Indian but born in England, if Stacey held a poor Indian Boy in the slums of India, i wouldn't care, so long as all the course to help PEOPLE regardless of race. No idea what the massive deal is, yes it may give Africa a bad light of been very poor, etc.. but its an effective method for fund raising..

The interviewer makes it seem as though raising money is all that matters and frankly he was extremely rude to the gentleman to his left. I'm cringing trying to get through this video.
5 mins in and they ignore the black guys point to talk amongst themselves, the man said use the actual Africans, listen to them but they cut him off and no body wants to hear what he has to say, they feel their points and goals are more important, just like the organisations he talked about
There are ways to help, that really do help! It's the difference between a hand out, and a hand up! One way suppresses and keeps people dependent! The other helps them help themselves! For instance, shoes for the poor. Buy a pair of shoes. And the company donated shoes for people needing shoes. Millions of pairs of shoes flowed to that country! Result, shoe companies in that country, providing shoes, and jobs for the people of that country, went. Out. Of business!

What are African leaders doing to help their people, increase the economy for ordinary Africans (not just the rich) and combat corruption? This should be the main goal for the future, but graft prevents African companies from opening plants and other opportunities in Africa.

I urge people to stop giving to African based charities as it's not helping. It's time Africa and African people assert themselves and build their own societies.
I have sent many packages of vegetable seeds to a church work of Zambia. One day he emailed me and said "thank you for you are feeding us". I am no savior but I am tired of this idea that my motives for helping has to be questioned. Isn't that racism?
