Fatima Bhutto and Marc Lamont Hill | Studio B: Unscripted
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лис 2019
- The very first episode of Studio B: Unscripted sees award-winning author and activist Fatima Bhutto in conversation with celebrated host, academic and writer Marc Lamont Hill as they compare notes on the various ways injustice and oppression work across the world.
Bhutto and Lamont Hill explore everything from the politics of activism to the impact that the military industrial complex has had on pop culture - everything from films like Zero Dark Thirty to World Wrestling Entertainment.
With six best-selling books under her name, Fatima comes from the Bhutto political dynasty in Pakistan, she is the niece of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and her father was brutally killed although those responsible have not yet faced justice.
Lamont Hill is a professor at Temple University in the US, a writer and media personality. During the show, they surprise each other with the similarities between the African American experience of police brutality and oppression in the United States, and Pakistan's own record of political violence.
Bhutto's latest book, The New Kings of the World, is an inside look at how Bollywood, Turkish soap operas and K-Pop are challenging the cultural dominance of the US around the world. Lamont Hill is also one of the presenters of digital talk series, Black Coffee.
Combining insight, emotion and a bit of humour, our guests go on to discuss why speaking up for the Palestinians - or indeed any repressed people - could cost you dearly, as experienced by Lamont Hill, the way feminism can be usurped by power or racism, and the hidden messages in pop culture.
The views expressed in this programme are the guests' own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera's editorial stance.
Studio B, Unscripted is a free flow conversation between two guests and a small audience, with no mediation, no MC, no TV presenter ... focusing on what brings us all together and how we can tackle and discuss some of the big issues of our time.
Editor's note: This programme was recorded before the latest news about Colin Kaepernick.

"If I don't steal it then someone else will"
~ Yakob 2021 ~
I could listen to either of them for hours, but together, I don't want the conversation to stop
Fatima Bhutto would never speak about her family corruption and bad governance in the Sindh province of Pakistan because she has also benefited from it, and now she participates in international forums on human rights and other issues. It's a wonderful world, we are living in, where morality has a different meaning when it comes to corrupt and powerful people.
@Khan... totally agree. Great points. I would say she is full of contradictions.
False. She and her murdured father Murtaza's breakaway party were completely against the Bhutto-zardari dynasty of corruption. They even partially accuse them of assassinating him. Fatima has no relations to Zardari or Benazir, she lived far away in exile for most of her life.
Murtaza and Shahnawaz were committed to progressive, Islamic socialist, pro Arab, anticolonial policies of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto while they were abandoned and countered by Benazir and Zardari.
Zulfiqar championed relations with Syria, Libya, the PLO, and their likes. He was fully committed to the Arab liberation wars against the zionist entity. Murtaza (fatima's father) and Shahnawaz (her young uncle) both trained with Palestinian and Lebanese guerrillas with the support of Libya and Syria against pro western capitalist reactionary, Gen Zia.
@@supra1722 Thank you for countering the falsehood.
I am vehemently opposed to the politics of Bhuttos, including the politics of Shahnawaz and Murtaza. Their politics was never for the people or for any causes. It was always for the establishment/restoration of the dynastic politics, and Bhuttos continue to the most damaging dynasty in Pakistan, which is saying a lot when they have stiff competition from the Sharif dynasty.
Fatima’s father Murtaza was assassinated by the government when her aunt was the PM. She has stayed away from the politics of Bhuttos and has always spoken truth to power. She is an exceptionally impressive Pakistani.
@@Thothali I sympathize with your aversion to dynastic politics. I believe young Shahnawaz and Murtaza were youthful idealists, believers in third world solidarity and revolution against capitalism and feudalism. Meanwhile, the mainstream PPP and its followers have long become a cult of personality worshippers, much like the PML as you noted. I particularly admire the revolutionary allies and company Murtaza and Shahnawaz kept while waging their struggle against imperialist-backed Gen Zia.
actually she has... You choose to ignore. She has raised concerns about her father's death around the time right before, her aunt, Benazir became the leader of PPP. I was born in Sindh. We know the Zardari/Bhutto Klan quite well
Martin Luther King, Jr., stated that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” But I struggle with believing this. I think injustice becomes more cunning in how it is applied - especially when the tools of supposed justice, are in the hands of those that benefit from injustice. I hope that the arc will bend towards justice - but I think we cannot wait for it to happen. It requires us to fight. We need to honestly point out injustice and the true reasons for injustice - even if it is painful to face. “I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being, first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” Malcom X
Wow!!! What a discussion!!! Honest, Daring and Caring.

Fantastic conversation! Every bit as relevant today as it was 4 years ago!

Nowhere close to Malcom x
Wow!! These two are soooo, intelligent, beautiful and refreshing. What a a beautiful dynamic collaboration/presentation with so much heart and intelligence, Love it!! You go Marc and Fatima. A Joy to watch!!
I feel proud to hear ur mature comments on different topics
Her father was the elder brother of Benazir
He was murdered
As was the other older brother
She has benefited yes but also suffered and is an independent mind
Marc Lamont Hill is a strong individual
TRUTH MUST BE HEARD
AND CHANGE IS CONSTANT
Thank you
Let marc work in Al Jazeera please .
This show should have a separate channel like head to head
Hassan Arshad head to head has a separate channel???? Which one?
What a delightful conversation between two people who care and take action 💓 48mins flew by.
Discussions like these are what are needed today, not just rubbish which sells but have no authenticity instead of people with actual mature thoughts and logic, i mean i would not necessarily agree with them in every matter but still atleast they say everything with some sense and they seem to mean and believe what they say, trying to bring change in todays corrupt journalism with some real logic and letting people decide if they agree or not....Al Jazeera in my opinion of closely observing it for many years have been bringing such individuals to the mass of people/viewers and can help change the journalism as a whole... well done Al Jazeera
This was such an amazing conversation. They should teach a joint seminar together at universities around the world.
Fathima is doing a great job .
We are proud of you being a brave educated women of Pakistani back ground ma sha Allah she is beautiful also mark is cute guy . you can see the pain even behind their smiles, boath doing great job and are such great human being . keep up your great work guys 👍
Marc Lamont Hill is soooooooo beautiful! His soul, spirit, and truth is so wonderful.
This was so heartening to listen and watch. Thank you!
What a pleasure to hear them.both
Fatima you are my favourite, good luck.
powerful talk
She is very influential personality i wish i meet her one day for some knowledgeable discussion
She is probably my most favorite, intelligent person from Pakistan. A very good writer, and a principled person. I have read every book of hers. She is a very good speaker. And she speaks from the heart and and mostly without losing the rationality, for the most part. I even agree with her on her views regarding the jingoistic attitudes of multitude of Indians (not all) that contribute to prejudice and violence in the subcontinent. She could be my favorite niece.
Her blind spot is essentially the role of her father (a minor player) who hijacked a plane and was not averse to violent strategies. Tragic as it was, she needs to level with people about how he abused his privileged position.
Also she does not recognize and speak honestly about her grandfather's role in perpetuating the dysfunction that is Pakistan. She certainly gets a pass for grieving her personal loss as a daughter. But, her grandfather, ZA Bhutto was a very self-centered, unscrupulous politician who was dictatorial. Together with Genral Zia ul Haq caused the greatest damage to Pakistan. That does not come across in her writings or speeches.
Balakuntalam Sridhar Gen Zia made Pakistan to a super power . He made mistakes but his Khair outweighs his mistakes. You liberals are the ones ruining Pakistan. Pakistan identity is Islam . It’s just hasn’t reached its full potential yet. But it will sooner or later as hard times are coming and hard times create strong people.
Well seeing Fatima talking about Pakistani problems was amazing.Someone who haven't visited Pakistan for years and generalizing the problems of APS kids killings, Blasphemy laws and Terrorism is an elitist view without having much on ground knowledge.
Who else do you guys have in the West, in the popular, youth culture, in the intelligentsia? Let her be.
she is right about many thingsand i respect her as a Pakistani but not this .she is also not right about ptm .its a movement supported by indians to create disturbance in Pakistan.
She’s the real heir of Zulfiwar Bhutto
loved it! Marc needs to be on al jazeera all the time please he is the right guy always speak truth ....
"They want to protect the baby just for 9months" something that's more general phenomenon than he might be meaning
Culturally Educative, Superbly presented, Genuinely and Dinamically, a Wake up for all of us, based on facts, ;"Amazing +Superbly! Woww Fatima Bhutto, I wanna see and listen to you more often
Free Palestine 🇵🇸
Free Kashmir
What does free Kashmir mean? Why doesn't Pakistan free the part of Kashmir it occupies?
If it's free I will take it.
Glad for Fatima - she's got a wise head on her young shoulders. Wish her journaling on social justice translates into activism on the ground as she has more power and help than the rest in South Asia.
Bonjour fatima bhutto vous êtes une femme très talentueuse et très confiante en terme d'écriture sur la vérité ce qui ressort clairement de ses livres et chroniqueurs écrits
Starting at 43:29 Marc talks about radical hope. This feels particularly relevant to the attack on Palestine today.
14:38 spot on!
we need this bhutto in pakistan back.
When she says im from pakistan i proud 🖒
If she say i m zaradri daughter? Then how u gna feel
@@alishah1516 ye zardari ki beti nhi hai tabhi ase hai , agr huti tuh ase or yahan na huti im right
exactly , there are very few people who go with it
Despite of listening to her opinions about Pakistan's lacking judicial system, corruption, minority oppression, state administered killings sanctioned by those in power, etc- if you still feel proud then there is something terribly wrong with your understanding of her views! Watch the video again.
@@devshreebhardwaj3096 Are u proud of being an Indian, even the same things happens in India or are you just in denial? One can love ones country even if u critisize it. The reason one gives constructive critique is hoping that it will bring betterment for the society. So if u are questioning the status quo, does not mean you cant be patriotic. I guess u also love india even though you dont want it to continue it to be a country where women are oppressed, raped and set on fire. on a daily basis
This is a brilliant conversation; thumbs up!
@Ismail Sheikh only one person sounding like Trash ATM, and it aint Fatima Bhutto, Marc Lamont Hill or me!
@Ismail Sheikh Listen to what she is saying, and don't make stupid comments!
@Ismail Sheikh Oh so you are worse than I thought. Bye!
Two powerful people ❤️
20:07 Absolutely 💯. The double standards are visible miles away !!!
Best conversation b/w Marc sir and Fatima
She should talk about Kashmir and Afghanistan also
She born in Kabul
No need, completely support her as a Pakistani. Its her own choice she is a writer not a politician.
ali Wazir why should she?
Kashmir issue is Solved in India..she must talk about POK and Balochistan.
India is too powerful to be bullied..
Yohoooooo fatima bhutto love from pakistan u rock it.awesome move
This interview has so much truth, people, especially in US should listen to it.
Anything gets produce or created by Pakistan, It's 100% corrupted, layers, Do NOT TRUST and believe what those ISI, Pakistani politicians are saying, they're so corrupted any president serves in Pakistan as a president, after when their term of presidency finish, they go to prison serving time for corruption, bribery and bunch of other stuff, Including Bhutto family.
@@mattjoe67 only a non Pakistani like you knows the reality of Pakistan, Right!!
@@MUHAMMADSaadKhan730 It DOES NOT matter being a Pakistani or non Pakistani, your government (ISI) corruption is all over the news, look what your government doing to Afghanistan,If they are claiming they are an Islamic country, how could they train and send suicide attacks to Afghanistan and to the mosques, please try not to hide It It's all over the news they create terrorist.
Interesting conversation
So proud of you Fatima.
We are proud of Fatima Bhutto. She faced many problems and now she is living bravely with her own name.
Al Jazeera got a good one in Marc
MLH, good guy, nice performance
I really impressed by how beautifully talking about matters
I've always admired her for her intelligence!
@adam cohen please get yourself more educated on Islam before uttering such meaningless statements.

outstanding
This whole conversation was wonderful, the ending, discussing Malcolm X and making new leaders, was a cherry on top
She talk about how corrupt her family is stealing from the poor and needy
Mohamed a fake prophet destroyed world peace.
Is this a praise each others book show?
When u wana clean world start with ur home. Sory i m not against her i saw her first time in my life,, i respect her, but i wish evry single girl of sindh get education like her.
Lol...why you so surprised..??? Dont you know that all main stream news channels are run by zionist lobby.. which btw...also controlls the ECONOMY of United states of America0..??
She is not a politician .
Its not her fault what mess we are in . I am no fan of bhuttos but i wont blame a girl who grew without parents .
@@DD-fe2xw who stops her to write about this mess or talk about ds mess
but she just addressed the problem of lack of education

Interesting dialogue.
what a lady we proud of you my dear sis
Marc Lamont we follow yu here
That was so dope!
So I am a white man - and I am against imperialism - and I am against the injustices of capitalism - and I am against racism - and I am against discrimination. I get the feeling that Fatima Bhutto, thinks that all white men are a part of the power structure that oppresses non-white people. I am a Buddhist and I practice compassion daily - I see suffering in all people - white and non-white. I want sufferring to end - for all people. That is why I am against the power structures that enable and continue sufferring. So saying the words "People of Color", is the language of the the white imperialist... and we need a different language to unite all the people repressed by the white imperialist. So the white imperialist, group you all together - to lessen the uniqueness and richness of each group - according to your thinking - so what words can we use to unite all people that are suffering due to the white imperialist? And is the color a person's skin a factor in being included? I suppose I cannot join this group, because I don't have enough melanin in my skin? Or can I join - because we are all no color people?
Marc's Arabic name pronunciation is accurate......wonder where he learned from...Great!!!
He says mainly self taught
such a intelligent lady she is
27:45 this is a problem 🤨 I really liked that story
Marc needs to be on al jazeera all the time .........
Love you Fatima.
BB Fatima Bhutto zandabad mashallah good work and great writer
aljazira. a great place for honest journalism.
Unless you talk about Qatar and their system maybe.
i cant stop loving aljazeera
Truth teller
Where is my comment. They are removed
i don't agree with most of her political views but yea.. a strong woman that's what i liked most
Allah knows best
Fatima, you spoke the heart out of every Pakistani who knows how traumatizing it is to live under a perpetual shadow of state control, prevalent ignorance, and shameless radicals, who don't even realize their lethal bigotry, which has brought Pakistan to where it stands today. People who think you represent the Bhutto family as a political dynasty post-Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto are downright ignorant! Pakistan needs reform, and so does Pakistan People's Party, which was established by your grandfather but has been hijacked since he was shamelessly, immorally lynched by a despicable, sleazy dictator, Zia-ul-Haq - the man responsible for most of Pakistan's social ills haunting us today.
Such a poignant conversation this was... so grateful for your voice... thats hope! Great guest, have admired Fatima Bhutto from afar
would be good see miss Butto vs Christine Fair......
Marc is so cute he thinks Fatihmah Buhttoh has been opressed.
😂
No indication of that within this video.. stop with the bullshit.
If the young people have no vision for themselves for decent life they will take any vision offered to them! 👏
When she concluded it with in sha allah
It’s tragic what happened to her father. It was barbaric, extra judicial and inhuman. But it’s so convenient that she clearly ignores the fact that her father was involved in murders. It’s not black and white with her. Her father’s murder was a tragedy to her as a daughter. But her father yielded incredible power in Pakistan and he used it against his detractors. He employed violence too. She can’t white wash it.
Saman, very well said.
I wish she had told that her father was killed during the rule of her Real sister of her father and by the husband of her Aunt Benazir Bhutto. The police officer who was responsible for this killing was promoted in her Aunt;s rule.
Marc lamont hill ..you are a man
Well…her case was unique in one sense…her aunt’s husband had him killed for disrespecting him. He went on to become President of Pakistan.
Indian Cricket players played with the Army Hat on .. like if they r in the war .
Two super humans.
I have a lot of respect for MLH. Her grandfather ZAB oversaw the oppression of the whole Bangali nation.
Mkoa, ZAB came into power after Bangladesh's independence. What are you trying to spread, OUTRIGHT LIES??
Yes but he was pulling the strings behind and braying against Banglis. There is a video of him doing so.
@@sidsid9808 How did that usurper get into power when Mujibur Rahman won 164 seats out of 300 seats?
He himself claims he had already been selected as the PM a yesr before despite Sheik MR wining majority of the seats?
He lost you BD for sheer greed of power. You need to understand history not be sychophants.
@Adam Balleyballey But he was in bed with Ayub Khan. He was his most powerful minister
@Adam Balleyballey
Why are Pakistanis behaving like ignorant RSS? Wherr is your Islam when it comes to dicussions. Just look at how many of you are using filthy language/swearing when you cannot defend your position.
Any suprised how you behaved with Bangalis? Raped and pillaged the whole country?
Nowbyou admit Zab kicked Ayub out and cmae to power in 1970, before the 1971 war started. He was pulling the strings.
I became a fan of Marc Lamont after I watched this. It was mind blowing
Why Fatima Bhutto is not in PPP, it is her party, it is her heritage, not some puppets who added Bhutto name with them for making them bhutto. Fatima bhutto is the legal heir and she should be in politics.
While bashing Pakistan did she forget that her family has ruled Pakistan for 3 generations and is one of the major reasons for these conditions in Pakistan?
I really can’t blv he was fired Fromm CNN for his supporting of Palestine at the UN conference
Wowzers
