  • The very first episode of Studio B: Unscripted sees award-winning author and activist Fatima Bhutto in conversation with celebrated host, academic and writer Marc Lamont Hill as they compare notes on the various ways injustice and oppression work across the world.
Bhutto and Lamont Hill explore everything from the politics of activism to the impact that the military industrial complex has had on pop culture - everything from films like Zero Dark Thirty to World Wrestling Entertainment.
With six best-selling books under her name, Fatima comes from the Bhutto political dynasty in Pakistan, she is the niece of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and her father was brutally killed although those responsible have not yet faced justice.
Lamont Hill is a professor at Temple University in the US, a writer and media personality. During the show, they surprise each other with the similarities between the African American experience of police brutality and oppression in the United States, and Pakistan's own record of political violence.
Bhutto's latest book, The New Kings of the World, is an inside look at how Bollywood, Turkish soap operas and K-Pop are challenging the cultural dominance of the US around the world. Lamont Hill is also one of the presenters of digital talk series, Black Coffee.
Combining insight, emotion and a bit of humour, our guests go on to discuss why speaking up for the Palestinians - or indeed any repressed people - could cost you dearly, as experienced by Lamont Hill, the way feminism can be usurped by power or racism, and the hidden messages in pop culture.
The views expressed in this programme are the guests' own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera's editorial stance.
Studio B, Unscripted is a free flow conversation between two guests and a small audience, with no mediation, no MC, no TV presenter ... focusing on what brings us all together and how we can tackle and discuss some of the big issues of our time.
Editor's note: This programme was recorded before the latest news about Colin Kaepernick.

Fatima Bhutto would never speak about her family corruption and bad governance in the Sindh province of Pakistan because she has also benefited from it, and now she participates in international forums on human rights and other issues. It's a wonderful world, we are living in, where morality has a different meaning when it comes to corrupt and powerful people.

False. She and her murdured father Murtaza's breakaway party were completely against the Bhutto-zardari dynasty of corruption. They even partially accuse them of assassinating him. Fatima has no relations to Zardari or Benazir, she lived far away in exile for most of her life.
Murtaza and Shahnawaz were committed to progressive, Islamic socialist, pro Arab, anticolonial policies of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto while they were abandoned and countered by Benazir and Zardari.
Zulfiqar championed relations with Syria, Libya, the PLO, and their likes. He was fully committed to the Arab liberation wars against the zionist entity. Murtaza (fatima's father) and Shahnawaz (her young uncle) both trained with Palestinian and Lebanese guerrillas with the support of Libya and Syria against pro western capitalist reactionary, Gen Zia.

@@supra1722 Thank you for countering the falsehood.
I am vehemently opposed to the politics of Bhuttos, including the politics of Shahnawaz and Murtaza. Their politics was never for the people or for any causes. It was always for the establishment/restoration of the dynastic politics, and Bhuttos continue to the most damaging dynasty in Pakistan, which is saying a lot when they have stiff competition from the Sharif dynasty.
Fatima’s father Murtaza was assassinated by the government when her aunt was the PM. She has stayed away from the politics of Bhuttos and has always spoken truth to power. She is an exceptionally impressive Pakistani.

@@Thothali I sympathize with your aversion to dynastic politics. I believe young Shahnawaz and Murtaza were youthful idealists, believers in third world solidarity and revolution against capitalism and feudalism. Meanwhile, the mainstream PPP and its followers have long become a cult of personality worshippers, much like the PML as you noted. I particularly admire the revolutionary allies and company Murtaza and Shahnawaz kept while waging their struggle against imperialist-backed Gen Zia.

actually she has... You choose to ignore. She has raised concerns about her father's death around the time right before, her aunt, Benazir became the leader of PPP. I was born in Sindh. We know the Zardari/Bhutto Klan quite well

Martin Luther King, Jr., stated that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” But I struggle with believing this. I think injustice becomes more cunning in how it is applied - especially when the tools of supposed justice, are in the hands of those that benefit from injustice. I hope that the arc will bend towards justice - but I think we cannot wait for it to happen. It requires us to fight. We need to honestly point out injustice and the true reasons for injustice - even if it is painful to face. “I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I'm a human being, first and foremost, and as such I'm for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” Malcom X

Discussions like these are what are needed today, not just rubbish which sells but have no authenticity instead of people with actual mature thoughts and logic, i mean i would not necessarily agree with them in every matter but still atleast they say everything with some sense and they seem to mean and believe what they say, trying to bring change in todays corrupt journalism with some real logic and letting people decide if they agree or not....Al Jazeera in my opinion of closely observing it for many years have been bringing such individuals to the mass of people/viewers and can help change the journalism as a whole... well done Al Jazeera

She is probably my most favorite, intelligent person from Pakistan. A very good writer, and a principled person. I have read every book of hers. She is a very good speaker. And she speaks from the heart and and mostly without losing the rationality, for the most part. I even agree with her on her views regarding the jingoistic attitudes of multitude of Indians (not all) that contribute to prejudice and violence in the subcontinent. She could be my favorite niece.
Her blind spot is essentially the role of her father (a minor player) who hijacked a plane and was not averse to violent strategies. Tragic as it was, she needs to level with people about how he abused his privileged position.
Also she does not recognize and speak honestly about her grandfather's role in perpetuating the dysfunction that is Pakistan. She certainly gets a pass for grieving her personal loss as a daughter. But, her grandfather, ZA Bhutto was a very self-centered, unscrupulous politician who was dictatorial. Together with Genral Zia ul Haq caused the greatest damage to Pakistan. That does not come across in her writings or speeches.

I am a Buddhist and I practice compassion daily - I see suffering in all people - white and non-white. I want sufferring to end - for all people. That is why I am against the power structures that enable and continue sufferring. So saying the words "People of Color", is the language of the the white imperialist... and we need a different language to unite all the people repressed by the white imperialist. So the white imperialist, group you all together - to lessen the uniqueness and richness of each group - according to your thinking - so what words can we use to unite all people that are suffering due to the white imperialist? And is the color a person's skin a factor in being included? I suppose I cannot join this group, because I don't have enough melanin in my skin? Or can I join - because we are all no color people?

Fatima, you spoke the heart out of every Pakistani who knows how traumatizing it is to live under a perpetual shadow of state control, prevalent ignorance, and shameless radicals, who don't even realize their lethal bigotry, which has brought Pakistan to where it stands today. People who think you represent the Bhutto family as a political dynasty post-Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto are downright ignorant! Pakistan needs reform, and so does Pakistan People's Party, which was established by your grandfather but has been hijacked since he was shamelessly, immorally lynched by a despicable, sleazy dictator, Zia-ul-Haq - the man responsible for most of Pakistan's social ills haunting us today.

It’s tragic what happened to her father. It was barbaric, extra judicial and inhuman. But it’s so convenient that she clearly ignores the fact that her father was involved in murders. It’s not black and white with her. Her father’s murder was a tragedy to her as a daughter. But her father yielded incredible power in Pakistan and he used it against his detractors. He employed violence too. She can’t white wash it.
