    You are right. I have been working mainly on wing design and trying to get speed and torque. These drag types go around but don't produce much watts until 20 mph. These are both 20 - 40 watt designs and I have moved on to more fertile ground. These types have to be large to be effective. There are ways to make them better, but I am working on lift types now.

    Seems to me that these units could be used on any size boat, from sail to tanker or cruise ship. Are they being used on ships/boats at all?

    Cool builds and a great place to harvest wind power

    If you were to extend the width of your vertical connecting pieces of timber, you would funnel in more wind and your turbine would be more efficient plus if you made 2 half the height but on top of each other running in opposite directions you could have your rotor on one half and stator on the other half spinning in opposite direction so it would have the same effect as doubling your rpm at the moment.

      Nice thought, but how would you keep the wires from twisting and breaking?

  • @gizmoguyar
    @gizmoguyar 11 років тому +1

    That would be equivalent of just using one bigger alternator. The tricky bit with wind turbines is loading them. If you load them too much, their speed drops and they stop producing energy. If you don't load them enough, then you're missing out of potential. The designer strives to load it just enough so that it runs at maximum efficiency, and puts out the most power.

    It would be really nice to know how many watts are being produced because nobody has any clue how much power it really makes unless you say how many volts and amps. Volts x Amps = Watts

    I like the video. Sad that he does not answer any one. I wanted to know what the rpm was and how many blades on each unit.

    Stating only volts tells me nothing. How many amps? Example: if they're putting out 1 amp then each is putting out 20 watts, so I need 3 of these to power a 60 watt light bulb, which is not all that large.

    Volts? How about WATTS as that is a POWER measure.

    So same generator, gearbox train and same load (or open circuit) implies same power at given windspeed
    I feel in need of a power curve.
    Mike and Robert discuss this, amicably, if you read the thread

    Thnx for the reply I accidently stumbled upton this video again lol. Checking out your new stuff now. I don't know if it would be impossible but should check out the whale fin wing design.

    Keep in mind this video is quite old and an early stepping stone in my journey. I only leave these older videos up for history and perhaps kernels of knowledge. These particular type VAWTs were too expensive, and poor performing. They are kind of pretty though.

    The blades are angled 30 degrees off from the axis. But don't make this unit, it isn't worth the trouble. it was more a learnng step. There are simpler and cheaper ways to get power from wind. My more recent lift type VAWTs are much better.

    Please stop talking about volts as it does not mean a thing, The real substance is in watts! and not in volts. It is like a match which has a high temperature, but it contains little heat! and if you want to want to warm a house it is heat you talk about and not temperature. It is also like a sparking plug in a petrol car, the spark in the sparking plug had a high temperature but little heat and all the heat comes from burning petrol( even at a lower temperature) and not the high temperature of a spark plug.

      Carmel Pule' exactly right, basic physics knowledge is missing here. Learn something dude if you spend time to build things, spend 1/2 hour to know what power is. Open circuit voltage just means it's spinning a a given speed. You got a fancy rpm meter dude. LEARN SOMETHING FOOL!

      You can't charge a 12 volt battery with 11 volts 10000 amps. Volts do matter.

    So how informative do you think voltage readings are? That says nothing about power delivered until you have an electrical load and current Then you can talk about power delivered at various wind speeds. That is real information. Voltage alone says next to nothing. Voltage is analogous pressure in a pipe with no current flow and no water delivered.

      robert and probably others i looked and just what i thought no video of your wind turbine lynxsteam is showing 2 wind turbines and comparing blade speed using alternators that are the same so assuming the load is the same or open the voltage is like your speedometer so 1 don't make negative comments if you were not paying attention and 2 if you would like to criticize lets see your wind turbine video

    • @robertwendell1556
      @robertwendell1556 10 років тому

      Point well taken if all you're doing is comparing. It would have been nice to have a comment stating that. Power, after all, is the practical bottom line. Voltage alone says nothing about either one; only whether one is better than the other.

      Robert Wendell the name of the video was my first clue Lynx Vawt Comparison being i have not made my Vwat yet and so do not have a video i might have said "did you happen to get a amp reading during your test or did you have = loads during the test? its good i guess that i have taken the view that to show my work to others is more of a use to more people then the stress of reading negative comments by a few i am still hoping to start on my Vwat this winter now i have gathered most of the peaces

      Wasn't trying to put you down. I apologize for not making it more digestible and neutral in tone. I applaud what you're doing. I'm working on small models myself, testing different designs for VAWTs.
      No video so far. That's not my focus. I hope to eventually put my final design up on the Internet for free with a request for donations. Not seeking patents. Just trying to get it out there and maybe receive a little monetary appreciation for doing so.

      putting a finished plan up is good for some people but the videos i like to watch and it is how i have decided to go is showing the entire project the good and the bad and explaining what i think was the reason some part did or did not work i think that is why i tend to have to say something when i see negative comments i want to encourage the people like my self to be bold and honest in our videos so any one who would be wanting to do a project can be more successful in adapting to there aria with there resources and talents i wish i had time to say something to every negative comment i read but i dont guess you got luck of the draw haha

    voltage is proportional to speed, big deal. Torque is proportional to current. the product is power. So, be clear if you spend time to construct and compare. Do you know basic physics?
    also, you need a fixed load not a battery to compare. The power delivered into a battery depends on its state of charge. Very good job building, but ur very poor in actuality showing the difference. These are drag machines and inferior to lift machines in terms of power per meter squared of wind cross section. By increasing and channeling a larger cross section, you can make a drag machines approach the efficiency of a lift machine. These machines are high torque (high current) which makes generator designs expensive. You want high voltage ( ie high rpms) which you can get with a gearbox. In high winds you can make a drag machines sturdy and powerful.
