As an Orthodox Christian the most common prayer we pray is "Lord have mercy". We pray this over and over again, both at home in our personal prayer lives and in the Church. It constantly reminds us that we always need God's mercy. It aids in the acquisition of genuine humility. It is currently Great Lent, and during Lent we often pray the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian: Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust of power, and idle thought. (Prostration) But rather give the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant. (Prostration) Yeah, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own sins and not those of my brother, for Thou art blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen. (Prostration) The Jesus prayer is the most frequently used prayer in Orthodox Christianity after "Lord have mercy". It goes, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a/the sinner". Right before we partake of Holy Communion (the Eucharist) we pray the prayer of St. John Chrysostom which reads in part, "I believe, O Lord, and I confess that thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. And I believe that this is truly Thine immaculate body, and that this is truly Thine own precious blood. Wherefore, I pray Thee, have mercy on me and forgive my transgressions, both voluntary and involuntary, of word and of deed, of knowledge and of ignorance. And make me worthy to partake without condemnation of Thy holy mysteries, O Lord..." The Orthodox Church constantly reminds us of the need to be humble before God, that pride and arrogance separate us from God. It is only by acquiring the spirit of the publican, and maintaining that spirit, that we will be justified in His sight.
