Can you do a low cost music making on Android for beginners video or something along those lines?.Also I appreciate what you do and you do it very well. Something I've been wanting to get into but I just don't know how.
Guitar player for 30 years here. iPad is by far my favorite instrument. It's capable of an impossible amount of sound creation and it travels easy. Love love love it. Glad to see you exploring it. Seeing you working with it is inspiring. Thanks!
as a non musician full-time iPad Pro person who often plays synth videos while working, because I like listening to someone explore sounds while I do artstuff, this is delightful and I am very grateful to you for it
IK multimedia is such a cool company for 2 main reasons. Their products are quality and priced somewhere between fair and low. That duo is a must have for musicians like you and dabblers like me.
@@RedMeansRecording I use it much the same way you use Borderlands. I record straight into Spacecraft, often just using the builtin iPad mic, and mess things up there. It's pretty fun but i didn't know Borderlands and am excited to check that out. thanks
I have an iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Generation and it is quite possibly the most used, best device I have....and I have a studio of gear - getting the iPad deeply involved in my Studio gear and workflow has been a primary goal of mine for at least 18 months and this video was the moment, I pressed Buy on the stuff I needed to make it happen - thank you!
A lot of iOS music producers really love Nanostudio 2. Its super intuitive linear sequencer is so easy to make completed tracks and the built in synth is fantastic. Check it out. I think you’ll appreciate how well that app works.
Oh man, iOS music is blowing up! Very happy to see you’ve taken the plunge and excited to see where it takes you. I made a post on mylarmelodies’ video re: tips for Xynthesizr and iOS music in general, but I’ll just add: iOS has two types of audio apps: InterApp Audio (IAA) and Audio Unit (AU). AUs are the newer technology and like AU and VST on desktop systems you can load multiple versions of any app. IAAs are the older technology. Here you only get the single instance of an app to use. The simplest way to tell the difference is that an AU will open a window in AUM, while an IAA app will be a completely different screen. In your video Axon 2, Enso, Sunrizer and Rozeta are all AUs. AUM will save the state of those AU instances in its session. You don’t _need_ to save those independently. IAA apps, however, can’t save their state with AUM (it’s a limitation of IAA, not AUM) However, Audiobus, which is the granddaddy of iOS music (they created a way to pass audio between apps _before_ Apple introduced IAA and kickstarted real iOS music production), has some additional features that apps can take advantage of, one of which is State Saving. Both Xynthesizr and AUM can save their states with Audiobus, so if you hosted both, you could recall their settings automatically (this means you wouldn’t _need_ to save the AUM session either). Unfortunately, Borderlands and Patterning 2 (both IAA apps) don’t have the Audiobus State Saving hooks. However, AB also gives you a very nifty slide over panel that gives you rudimentary control of all apps hosted in AB which makes jamming with iOS that much more capable and fun. I would definitely check it out.
Axon 2: Since Axon works by counting ticks and triggering a drum when its threshold is reached, and since you can have those drum triggers count as ticks to other drums, the absolute coolest thing to do with Axon is to vary the threshold of some of the drums. This changes their count and the count of any drums they are wired to. Setting a Rozeta LFO to sweep the threshold of a drum in Axon is great fun!
Borderlands: While granulating samples is great fun, my favorite use is the “Rec In.” This samples live audio into a buffer and granulates that, turning Borderlands into a realtime granulation effect. You can create multiple buffers, so different grain clouds can granulate different parts of differently scaled buffers at the same time.
@@RedMeansRecording Hmmm, that's weird. Can't say I've seen / heard that before. So the waveform recording into the buffer was occasionally dropping out? Possibly some mismatch in buffer settings; this should all be controlled by the host. "Sir, have you tried rebooting your device?" Or do you mean "the crackles" that happen when the CPUs are saturated? Did you have a lot of other stuff going on? Or, conversely, did you have very little? One thing to note is that Apple is aggressive in trying to maintain battery life, so if your iPad isn't doing a lot it will switch to using low power cores. There have been issues where audio doesn't force the switch to higher power cores. You then had to drive the device harder to get it to switch to the high power cores, paradoxically getting better performance with more stuff going on. This was a massive problem with the newest Pro with FaceID when it first came out; it should have been fixed, but it still seems a bit wonky.
I discovered a lot of new options through this video. Thank you for that! One of my favourite iOS apps for playing around and getting ideas is ”Figure”. It’s a bit like a groovebox with pretty intuitive ways of sequencing and automating. I often end up jamming some quick silly stuff (and at least getting in a good mood), but every once in a while I strike a lucky combination of drum and synth sounds and I find something that’s worth working a bit more on in a DAW. Thanks for being inspiring, as always!
I've been working with ios music since the start of this year and your videos of the OP-1 have been a big inspiration for me in terms of your workflow and how you come up with the songs. Big fan!
Wow. Amazing demo. You and Mylar are getting me inspired to pull my iPad into my live performances. Aum seems like a really nice way to pull all those apps together in on nice performance package.
Hey Red. An update on this on 2023 would be cool. I’ve seen a lot of people using iPads and some sequencer to do cool stuff and get creative. Poly end plays meets MiRack. Or the sps404
I'm starting to see tablets used in pro live performances more and more. DJ's at my local club nights do more mixing/launching from their iPad than their actual decks!
Just to stay 4 years later I still watch this video for inspiration. Would love to see what you’d do with this setup now that iOS music making has improved so much. Keep being yourself 🤍
Be careful, you will soon, if not already, be an iOS music making fanatic. It as an app for everything from simple synths to effects to Protools type DAWs to everything betwixt. Plus, as you know, there are professional interfaces available for affordable prices. IRig stuff, make by IK Multimedia is incredibly high quality and Pro sounding. My fave developers, besides the known ones like Korg and Moog are Virsyn and Yonac. The fact that the sounds are as good as pc and Mac stuff and at much lower prices, makes IOS music making available for everyone who can afford coffee shop coffee and muffins, meaning anyone who has a job. Great video. Yes, Jakob is cool, along with thesoundtestroom, Electronisounds, theaudiodabbler, Henry the Bizness, Nutrix the Synth Guy and a few others. There is an incredible app that often goes unnoticed called Caustic. It's one of the best and deepest apps for making complete songs. It is also innexpensive, amazingly easy on the CPU resources, and includes 12 different synths, many built-in effects. It's a masterpiece of programming. Never ever crashes. Boy, I mentioned caustic as an afterthought but went on a big blab session about it. Again, thanks and I'm looking forward to more from you.
This is so exciting! I can’t wait to see what a new voice such as yours brings to the table in iOS musicking! I must confess that your videos were the main inspiration for me to start making iOS jam videos, I even downloaded after effects to try and make them pretty. I’m so happy you’re getting into iOS music making!
A quite entertaining video, and crediting (our) famous Mr. Haq right at the beginning made me watch the whole show. A compliment for effort & result. I just started with pad-audio, following decades of the common hard- & software-based music production. Thought about releasing own digging-details and learning-steps clips on youtube. So you earned points, just by actually doing so. (y) -- Just a small, personal advice: "first steps" in the name rises expectations pointing to "HOW to begin" - as a general, basic tutorial - what the video don´t. "MY first steps" is a different thing. (Nevertheless a well done production, so don´t worry.)
It's amazing that you can do things with an iPad that would have taken $30K worth of studio equipment not 10 years ago. And sure! I'd like to see more of what the iPad can do. Have you tried out any of Korg's iPad apps?
Congrats for your first iOS app video and welcome to my world 😉. A really good choice of apps for this video! Hope to see more of it in the future. As apps are quite powerful, do not cost a lot and offer a really professional sound nowadays, there are a lot of musical opportunities for you to discover!

I can’t thank you enough for the shoutout man! 👊🏼💙💛

Sooooooooo many options.... nice demo!
For about the same price as the Roli, the Arturia MicroFreak looks like a great controller for iOS MPE apps... and you get a synth also!
hello again!
Well... definitely more videos on iOS music making !!!! So much useful informations in here ! Thank’s Jeremy !
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the video! You and Mylar have managed to get me intrigued in iOS music development, do you have any suggestions for iPad models?
I have Enso... except it's a mediation timer! Lovely video :) x
Exactly what i needed ! starting my ios journey too ! so cool
Same and I bought mine for the same reason as J.

wow seems like a lot has happened lately in the iOS music sphere. Great vid!
Thanks for the video, I'm going to make a cup of tea and try and follow along. Cheers.
Thank you so much for your cool and inspiring video on iOS music! I’m just getting started and this is just what I needed to see.

Love your channel, keep up the great work, you are truly talented!
what even, this is amazing!
I like how casually you make epic music.
