People are disappointed because majority like over processed photos which majority of the phones delivers today. Sony goes in to direction mirror less cameras, I personally appreciate this approach where shadows are shadows, night is a night and people's faces does not like like zombies 😂

braindead people such as yourself need over processing as you're incapable of taking proper pictures yourself since you're clearly oblivious to the overprocessed nature of the Xperia phones. Seek help.

Same 👍 I really don't get the people who don't like mini-bezels but a hole/notch in the screen. If it were TVs or PC monitors it would be awful and I bet there would be a lot of complaints

Audiophile dream... Of course that's why "audiophiles" use an external DAC and not a build in jack which is still worse than a few years old LG...
Just check some reviews, jack on Xperia gives same quality as headphones connected to usb C, and it's same quality than iPhone...
Not to mention that output from jack like this isn't enough powerful for quality overhead headphones...

I just upgraded to the Xperia 1 VI, came from the Oneplus 8. I agree that I'm a little disappointed in the auto mode, but once I get into the manual mode I'm blown away. The software is also a little lacking, there's not much for customization compared even to Pixel's Android. However, I really appreciate it and I bought it for $970 USD so I'm really happy about the purchase. Don't regret it one bit and still would have preferred it to the Pixel 9 Pro because of the SD card slot. I don't want Sony to get comfortable though, there's definitely still more to work on.

All this is true. Recently got a sony xperia 1 vi and compared to my 4 years old, heavy used note 20 ultra, it's hard to tell a difference. In fact the note 20 is a bit betrer at max zoom including digital. Also the note 20 has 960 fps slow mo. In pro mode, the sony is a bit better and has 6400 iso vs the note 3200 iso. On paper the sony screen is 50% brighter but in feels more like 20% brighter. Battery life is where the sony is way better but the note has the s pen and note software which is pretty good. I was also surprised to see again and again that the note 20 ultra with 4 years of apps ibstalled booted up slightly faster than the fresh sony. Sovfor me it boils down to sony better battery life and brighter screen vs note 20 s pen . Also love the tools less sim tray on the sony

Sony Xperia series is a phone not for everyone, so all kinds of video with cons and pros, I watched them and weighs it down base on my daily use. So definitely, Xperia series is an acquired taste.
Some of them prefer Apple, Samsung or Pixel. So there's that.

The problem with Sony is their software. They charge a premium for a phone that is quickly forgotten when a newer one comes out. They keep gatekeeping features and the Auto mode leaves a lot to be desired.

    • @SebastianDylag

True, I feel like the hardware here isn't that bad, it's more about the software.

    • @didier9L
      @didier9L 2 місяці тому +1

Even from a hardware perspective, the 1VI is still behind the competition. The telephoto sensor (IMX650) has been recycled for three generations (1IV, V and VI). They just improved on the zoom range. And what’s funny is that, while they have tweaked the algorithm to make images sharper on the telephoto lens, they won’t bring this improvement to older models like the 1 V or 1IV. In fact, the V won’t be getting the 2X crop mode, 48MP JPG and new camera app with Android 15. They are trying to make existing users upgrade every year if they want new features.

They only need to extend software support to at least 5 years for the 1 series.
Theyre charging top dollar for that device and yet it has software support equal or worse than phones that cost 3-4 times less.
Auto mode does leave things to be desired. Im sure Sony could figure out some image processing algorithm that can be as good as Vivo and Xiaomi even.
The problem is if they are willing to go all in on good software. Considering Sony's mobile division is quite small, it might be too much of a risk.

iPhones don't have much sharpening going on, that is more Samsung phones. iPhones don't have that natural colours either, they might have less contrast though. Pixels have more natural colours but more contrast.
It isn't about sharpening, it's about software processing and detail. The Xperia 1 VI has worse sensor than the competition (apart from the main camera), so they have less detail. They also don't have AI digital zoom so there's gonna be less detail for zooming.

Android 15 they will release real video pro. Hope they improve more on telephoto quality on their next flagship.
For portrait mode, Sony did not apply HDR to the picture that's why picture looks not as "colorful" .
As for the photo you took from Xiaomi, I can clearly see computational edits. For Xperia, it looks like a real camera and not over processed.

    • @SebastianDylag

      1. Buying a phone so that You can get some functions at a later date... No thank You.
To many brands, developers etc. now make things half complete and will (maybe) deliver it later. We don't review things that might be here later, we review as it is.
      2. Telephoto is blurry, so no matter the software, it's just not good. Even if it has a great sensor and has good software editing, it's still bad.
      3. Portrait mode - doesn't matter, for most people the phone should take great photos right out of the box. People don't care if something is turned on or off, they want to be happy with the phone they bought and the way it takes photos.
      4. Any phone with "good" photos will be based on the software editing 99.9% of people want the photos to look good, without having to edit in post or having to know what and how to do. If I wanted a "real" camera, I would just use my Sony A7IV. The phone camera is about quick, easy and fast results. If I take a raw with Xiaomi 14 ultra, it will still be like a raw from a real camera.
I've been doing photography and videography on a daily basis as my main work for many years now, so please... Don't let brand loyalty blind You from the problems that Sony has with their phones. They have the hardware (for the most part) but the software is just not there. If people blindly defend Sony, they will never improve.
Ohh and for the price of this Sony, you can get the Xiaomi 14 ultra and Sony a7 II , so You have both a better phone (with waaaaay better camera capabilities) and a proper camera.

I have Sony a7 IV if I want to shoot manually and edit in post. Phones (for most) aren't as a main camera, people want ready to use photos right away.
At the price of Xperia 1 VI You can buy the xiaomi 14 ultra and sony a7 II (here where I live) , so You can have both amazing photos right away, and pro controls on a full frame camera at the same price.
James Matthews videos ? The paid by sony videos ? (literally an AD essentially.) I mean even the fact that it's posted on the Sony's UA-cam channel tells You all you need to know. (As pointed by people here in the comments)
For a "point and shoot" Sony is unfortunately far behind. I'm a Sony fan, use Sony devices on daily basis (My main camera is the Sony a7 IV , my main console ? - Sony PS5, etc.) But being totally honest the Xperia 1 VI while it does have some things to love, it also underperforms a lot.
I mean.... Xiaomi 14 Ultra uses 4 sensors from SONY (so all cameras it has) and it performance so well !

No phone can touch Sony's manual capabilities and the video/picture quality, none. People are used to seeing "beautified", oversaturated, over-sharpened etc. pictures from the likes of Samsung, Apple and all the Chinese crap brands, while Sony keeps it "raw". The directly said they want user to have more vineela Maro experience so they divided to remove auto focus. Else Sony has the best auto of any phone.

Do you need autofocus in macro? I thought the idea is to go as close as possible?
I guess it depends on how close the main cam can focus. If it can focus at close range you don't need the macro to compensate like the Pixel 8 Pro

Had Samsung for so many years. Then got Xperia PRO-I and now the 1 VI. It's truly the best, and I don't think I would go back to Samsung again. But definitely Sony isnt for everyone. It is for people who want to shoot manual. For auto mode, people should go for different brand.

My problem with that is :
If I want manual settings -> I already have a Sony A7 IV camera for that !
Also, for the price that the Sony Xperia is being sold... You would expect the auto mode to be better 🤔

I had the one3 before and it went warm at first but not after the updates. This one, the 1VI can get warm when charging sometimes. Never heated up when using it. Its as solid as it could be. And its likely to have more juice left after four years. Most iPhone users had swapt screens and battery then. I guess you havent this xperia.
