  • Natalia, a nun from a remote Russian monastery, comes to Moscow 17 years after the terrorist attack on the Dubrovka Theatre. She has been sent there to organize a memorial evening for the victims of the attack that took place in October 2002. We soon learn that Natalia and her family themselves were witnesses to the attack. Almost forgotten now by the outside world, the organizers and participants of the memorial evening or the Conference (as they have been asked to call it officially) are made to feel like a burden by the rest of the society. Following the chronology of the events as told by a few participants in the memorial evening, we learn the dark details of Natalia's personal story.

This is probably the best film I’ve seen all year. It has a very claustrophobic feel to it, which fits perfectly with the context of the story. I, for one, interpreted it as the story of a woman who not only can’t get over her trauma, but also can’t accept that others are able to move on with their lives.
Admittedly, this might not be everyone’s cup of tea. The first seven minutes of the film were absolutely ridiculous at first, but as the movie finished, it all came together for me. If you have the patience to unravel the film’s mystery and authorial intent, you will end up with an absurd, yet dramatic and fullfilling experience. I almost never cry while watching films, but I nearly choked up near the ending of this one. Highly recommend it!
