"the branches of the trees they will hang lower now" from 2:29 to 3:11 it's one of the best musical experiences i've ever had. it's like a terrence mallick or a tarkovsky movie or a really powerful and glorious epiphany. the world becomes smaller, life is an rich and enormous existence and yet all things become much simpler, and everything is at hand's reach. i've come to love pretty much all of beach house's songs but this particular section, i will carry it to my last day, i'm certain.

One of the best memories of my life, I was meeting my girlfriend on a snowy winter’s night, and she was walking out to me across the street from her house as I was trudging through the snow-buried sidewalk. I can just remember seeing her coming to meet me under the orange glow of the street lamps with the snow falling all around us, and she looked like an angel, complete with an orange glowing halo above her. I’ll never forget that, because for a moment time went still and I could’ve died then and there and I would’ve been happy
My friend, I understand as a person; plagued, by 2 'mental breaks' and consequently ended up with 'grand-mall panic attacks' for years. God knows, how, difficult this life-altering experience can change your priorities. I listened to the, "Cocteau Twins" music to help manage my emotions. Your stronger than you know ... !!! Plus, remember, only extremely intelligent people have 'mental breakdowns'. The simple reason, is; that, we use more of our brains than the average person.
I'm a stoic guy, nothing usually moves me the way this album has. I'm nostalgic for a romance I've never had. Fuck this album, I love it so much. Seeing them 3 times in December.
It's amazing how music and words can do that (for me more the music, as I'm not english native and it's easy to listen this song without connotations, but lyrics are as good as music in this song). I understand perfectly what are you talking, and I can feel your feeling...

I discovered this song recently, and having not long ago started to fall in love with my girlfriend, I thought 'wow this is exactly where I'm at right now, this totally describes falling in love', then noticed your comment. You nailed it. We're hoping to get married later this year.
At 3:11 begins the best part, I almost can feel how my feet start to leave the ground slowly, floating, levitating and feeling surrounded by an ethereal peace. Then I can listen to angel's voices singing "there's a place I want to take you...". I keep levitating with my eyes closed, almost crying until I reach the opened doors of heaven at 5:30
it all makes sense... now that i know the meaning behind this song, it's so much more emotional. truly an ethereal experience every time i listen. this is my new favorite song. not only is it a fantastic album opener and an excellent standalone song, but it's a wonderful tribute to two beautiful souls that earth lost. rest in peace, Liz and Rose. ❤
sorry this is 5 years late, but fun fact about the bassline… it’s actually the same one in beach house’s other song “irene,” the final song from their previous album, just reversed
This song is about two girls who were crushed by a derailing train in 2012. They were sitting on a bridge, with their legs hanging over the street below, and shortly before the train arrived one of them posted a picture of it to Twitter with the caption “levitating”. Knowing that context makes it even sadder.
Man that’s dark . I’ve seen the photo as well , it’s literally them say on the bridge with their feet hanging over the edge and moments after they were killed
I'm a local rapper from Baltimore and knowing that beach house is from Baltimore too and makes such beautiful mezmorizing music just makes me feel that much better about the world and makes me want to be my greatest version. Some people have no idea how big of an impact there music has on people
Connor Cerf Thats a wonderful sentiment. I hope you get a chance to meet them irl and have a chance to tell them all that and thank them to their faces🙂
A friend of mine lost his wife due to a violent incident that ocurred in his house when he wasn't around. She was 7 weeks pregnant. After some time, he talked to me about a recurring dream he was having; near his old house was a wooden area where he carved their initials in a big old tree a few years ago. In his dream, his wife (with a very terrifying appearance) was trying to coax him to follow her through the wood, until arriving to the previous mentioned tree. There, she would stand in front of him, but her eyes and face were different; kind of like the eyes of "the exorcist's demon" -who later I would know as Pazuzu-. Her face was gaunt, gray and with dirt, all of this according to his own words. Then, she walked backwards into the tree as she was trying to draw him towards too. I remember he said how he could feel the drowning sensation as if you were hit in the chest by a car at 160 km/h. It was a haunting experience; both for him (who was reliving the moment while he was telling me) and for me (as I can still remember perfectly the moment after, when this song came up, that he told me that it was one of his favorites as a way to change the subject). He committed suicide 4 days later. That was the last time that I saw him alive. I usually skip this song because of this, even though I still add it in every single playlist that I make. Today, while I was preparing my breakfast, I was listening to one of those playlists when this song started playing. I couldn't change it because I was kneading dough. I started to feel a little uneasy but I did nothing. Now, after 2 years, I can't stop listening to it on loop.
I'm with you dude. I don't understand where the evil in this world comes from. I was abused as a child, but I would not ever hurt anyone, especially a woman or a child. I would give my live to protect women and children that I do not even know. The pain some people are forced to go through I can never wrap my fingers around. The people who commit those crimes are incapable of appreciating this movie that we are all miraculously in. We all need to respect and love each other.

Apologies, I do not handle advanced English. This song is hypnotic, I can not get away from the sound as soon as I run into it. A great impact has caused me to hear it for the first time; they do not reach the words to express everything that mobilizes it. And cry, because there is a lot of nostalgia, compassion, and other feelings. And to compose the good lyrics of a song, has its merit, but the music here, so amazing, the guitar, the percussion, the "dream" voice of Legrand, the atmosphere of floating love, meets here to make a harmonious ALL , that although it bears the seal of Beach House, in this song they leave such a deep impression in the soul, that the words do not reach to size it. Each person can make him evoke or focus on different moods, or all together. Even at the risk of reducing, I could synthesize it in two words: love and elevation. A great masterpiece has produced this set, deeply moved and grateful that the spiritual world manifests itself in some musicians like them. This song, every time we listen to it, will levitate our soul. Greetings from Argentina
Thanks for your appreciations, I must be honest, I have helped myself with the google translator. Continuing to learn English is a pending task that I will resume as soon as I can. I hug everyone
this song often brings tears to my eyes. it doesn't create the sad thoughts, but it breaks down the emotional numbness that holds that sadness at bay from my conscious mind, and lets me feel it
nobody cares. When you accept the fact that nobody will ever care as deeply as you do about the things you're passionate about or your whole self, that's when you stop caring too. And that's when you stop eating yourself out every single day from the second you wake up to the moment you fall asleep. Actually that's wrong, because you do it subconsciously when you sleep as well. Nobody will ever care. That's hust hoow it is..
Omg I think you've got the mail on the head with what I feel beach house does to me too! I am in tears listening to lots of their songs ha! It lets any sadness out it's just so beautiful and melancholic
Mehzabin Mahasin YESSSSSS. it’s so scary and beautiful. They are really up there with Radiohead and the cure for me when it comes to impressionist lyrics.
A perfect song. Even after 4 years it still carries me to an overwhelmingly emotional state of mind. Words are inadequate for music like this. Sorrowful and transcendent.
I used to see levitation as one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard, but now I have two POVs coexisting: the previous one and now a beautiful tribute to 2 people who loved each other until the end. RIP
This song truly makes me wanna live my life to the fullest and enjoy every emotion of it, even the most terrible ones. Travel to the most gorgeous landscapes. Meet new friends and go on the craziest adventures together. Have a crush. Fall in love. Get my heart broken. Heal myself by living even more, even deeply and even fully.
i'll never forget the first time i listened to this song. I was sitting on a balcony at night, 19 stories high and a guy sat down next to me. it was cold, he gave me his sweater and we looked out at the city lights and the carnival rides lighting up in the distance. we didnt talk. we just enjoyed each others company and admired the view. we're married now
I was brought here after conversing with a self help AI app about musical preference. she (the AI) actually recommended this band to me, and upon finding out that they were in fact a real band, picked an album at random and I've never been more lucky. thank you, replika algorithm and random change for giving me some real hit bangers.
Listened to this on psilocybin yesterday. The song, which is already beatiful, turned into a kind of celestial choir of voices sung by angels. Every single note or beat was full of meaning. I started to cry, because I was overhelmed by how beautiful it was.
Wow! I can only imagine how amazing Beach House sounds on shrooms🥹🥹 I wish I knew of them when I was on my hallucinogenic journey.. my heart would probably melt with how strong the emotions would be hearing them.
This song reminds me of my last love. The night I heard this song for the first time, I realized that it was all over, that there would be no more plans. The family we wanted and planned together will never exist. That night, I cried in pain and sadness remembering her.
While "Levitation" might be inspired by a tragic event the lyrics can be deeply meaningful to the listener in a positive way. To me this song will always remind me of my daughter. Watching her grow at the speed of light before my eyes; asking myself what happened to the time? Proud and amazed at the adult she is becoming... ✨
For the last 1 month or so all ive been listening too is Beach house. i love the fact that its winter right now which means i'll forever have a strong associated with the cold weather with them. Its just so fitting.
This songs feels like trying to find a person you once knew in the same body, but realize they’re not the same anymore and never will. So you’re only left with the memories and the emptiness of never finding them.
@@deadhomelessbum tbh this is what I love about them. We're not so familiar with the sound at first, but then we come back to it when we're hurt and we're directly emotionally attached to it. ❤
[there's a place I want to take you], were you high when they knocked on the door looking for you~, [when the unknown will surround you], take my hand as our bodies lift up slowly~
Steven Lopez Kevin Parker from tame impala is actually a huge fan of beach house! He's played songs like Irene on the mix before they played their shows
You and me with our long hair on the gold one After midnight we could feel it all I go anywhere you want to You should see there's a place I want to take you When the train comes I will hold you Cause you blow my mind On the bridge levitating cause we want to When the unknown will surround you There is no right time There is no right time The branches of the trees They will hang lower now You will grow too quick Then you will get through it The branches of the trees They will hang lower now There's a place I want to take you When the unknown will surround you
02:29 - 03:11 is the best part of this song by far. I really wish it was longer. The way the vocal sounds over the chord change is just so perfect. I wish it went back into this. I think this could have been a masterpiece if it fell into this at least one more time. Can someone do a remix?
even after listening to this track for a solid year, i still haven't gotten sick of it. their music seriously transports you to a completely different dimension.
During a time when my depression was at its absolute worst, I remember going on long walks around the outskirts of town at the same time every night, just as the sun was setting. I would always listen to music and I found this song in particular so therapeutic, just something about listening to this ethereal magic while walking through random forests and fields, and watching the sunset in a state of complete isolation made me feel so free. I’m so thankful I stumbled upon depression cherry, as usually I would stay away from modern pop (if you can call it that) but it instantly reminded me of bands like Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine, even certain material by Smashing Pumpkins. It’s amazing the impact good music like this can have on our lives.
Remember listening to this while going back home from my GF, as we are in a distant relationship. Remember crying to this song and realising how much I love her and that it's a true, pure feeling, I felt sad to leave her again, but at the same time I was happy to finally find that Other Half and to have serious plans about that one person. I was smilling and tears just wouldn't stop dripping... Next time we were together I played this song in our room, we held our hands in a slow dance-like move. It felt like... levitation.
The song talks about an accident that occurred in Ellicott City, near Baltimore in August 2012. Two 19-year-old girls, Elizabeth and Rose, apparently known to Alex Scally, were crushed by coal from a train that derailed just in time. the bridge where the girls were sitting hanging out during midnight. It was a disaster. The girls were found under the carbon rubble in the same place where they were already lifeless, the rubble took weeks to be removed. Minutes before the accident they were uploading photos on twitter, one of them shows their feet raised while they were sitting on the bridge next to the phrase "Levitating". If you listen carefully you can feel the moment, the train approaching... it's not the same song you heard from the beginning. By Liz and Rose 🌹
I hold my baby and dance to this song, it has a new meaning to me after I had him last year. All the places I want to take him, going anywhere he wants to, when the "train" comes I will hold you (child birth), and the branches hanging lower (him growing too quickly). I'm seeing them in concert this Friday hopefully I won't bawl my eyes out the whole time.

Mehzabin Mahasin YESSSSSS. it’s so scary and beautiful. They are really up there with Radiohead and the cure for me when it comes to impressionist lyrics.
Knowing the story behind it makes it 20 times more breathtaking
2:29
Jesus, that's fucking good.
I'm addicted to this song. It makes me feel 'something'
this song is unexplainable
this song deserves so much more love. there is so much depth here.
This album and the film Synecdoche New York honestly saved my life about 4 years ago. Never been so glad a piece of art existed
this song perfectly describes what it feels like to grow up and realize that painful experiences are part of real life. song makes me cry every time
A perfect song. Even after 4 years it still carries me to an overwhelmingly emotional state of mind. Words are inadequate for music like this. Sorrowful and transcendent.
Victoria's lyrics and the way she delivers them are breathtaking. The synth and guitar interplay are pretty cosmic too!
Beautifully said.
"Heal myself by living even more, even deeply and even fully" I love this. Thank you.
i'll never forget the first time i listened to this song. I was sitting on a balcony at night, 19 stories high and a guy sat down next to me. it was cold, he gave me his sweater and we looked out at the city lights and the carnival rides lighting up in the distance. we didnt talk. we just enjoyed each others company and admired the view. we're married now
AHHHHHHHH THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
One of the most powerful songs I've heard. Truly spiritual. The power of music is divine
I was brought here after conversing with a self help AI app about musical preference. she (the AI) actually recommended this band to me, and upon finding out that they were in fact a real band, picked an album at random and I've never been more lucky. thank you, replika algorithm and random change for giving me some real hit bangers.
What app is this Ethan
"You burrowed so deep into your cataclysmic tunnels that you never realized that the light was right behind you the entire time."
2:30 makes you feel like the main character of a coming-of-age indie film, when they have an epiphany at the climax of the story.
YES IT DOES. It feels like wind would blow your hair in beat with the background tune as you're standing on a hill
I can't really explain it but I just started crying listening to this song. It's so beautiful I feel like it's offering me an escape.
"you will grow too quick, then you will get over it"
read this right as it played.
@@anirose6807 same
what does it mean??? do u think u can elaborate?
@@emanuelashosha bitch don’t get a attitude lmfaooo
This song is diamond. Why is this so underrated it needs more people.😭😭😭😭😭😭i love this
I arrive many years painfully late at this amazing song, to realize the outro structure is criminally underrated? Literal goosebumps.
Came for the intro stayed for the outro
From 2:29 to 3:10
How do they still make me choke up after infinite listens to this entire record?
Too many times.
"there is no right time." 💔
I was a bit disappointed when I first eagerly listened to Depression Cherry but on repeated listenings it grows and grows. Wonderful stuff.
Yes. Unlike teen dream, which you love since the first listening.
yeah same. i was like "okay. more beach house. cool." but its grown to be one of my favorites from them
@@deadhomelessbum tbh this is what I love about them. We're not so familiar with the sound at first, but then we come back to it when we're hurt and we're directly emotionally attached to it. ❤
My soul floats each time I hear their music 🌹
[there's a place I want to take you], were you high when they knocked on the door looking for you~, [when the unknown will surround you], take my hand as our bodies lift up slowly~
+Joseph Ching THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn we're all here after discovering the true meaning to this song. RIP Rose & Liz
Listened to this song for the first time while stoned and it felt like the greatest song I've ever heard in my life.
i feel u i'm stoned too and heard it for the first time. Best feeling ever!...
Same lol
Gee, you'll hear anything while stoned and it will be "best ever". Doesn't indicate anything.
"plants love & revelation"
Dustin Hughes that’s because it is
I never smoke but whenever I listen to beach house or tame impala I just feel like taking flight
Steven Lopez Kevin Parker from tame impala is actually a huge fan of beach house! He's played songs like Irene on the mix before they played their shows
That, a few drinks and this calls for a good night
That i can relate too so much 👌
You get me.
Me right now 😄
It actually sounds as good as sober, it is just too beautiful
this is so unexplainably beautiful
You and me with our long hair on the gold one
After midnight we could feel it all
I go anywhere you want to
You should see there's a place I want to take you
When the train comes I will hold you
Cause you blow my mind
On the bridge levitating cause we want to
When the unknown will surround you
There is no right time
There is no right time
The branches of the trees
They will hang lower now
You will grow too quick
Then you will get through it
The branches of the trees
They will hang lower now
There's a place I want to take you
When the unknown will surround you
02:29 - 03:11 is the best part of this song by far. I really wish it was longer. The way the vocal sounds over the chord change is just so perfect. I wish it went back into this. I think this could have been a masterpiece if it fell into this at least one more time. Can someone do a remix?
I totally agree
yes! perfect if they had another twilight movie lmaO!!!!
You're absolutely right but the "ending" is also marvellous (3:40). I absolutely adore this song.
That part was cool, no better than the rest of the song though in my opinion.
bruceaisher Agreed!
This is how beauty manifests itself.
Saw them live in Milwaukee , absolutely mesmerizing. They were amazingly beautiful.
even after listening to this track for a solid year, i still haven't gotten sick of it. their music seriously transports you to a completely different dimension.
I wish Beach House could know how much they were helping me through depression.
Rest in peace Elizabeth and Rose. I'm so sorry. I hope you're both resting easy now. I hope you held each other close 💔
My Soul will forever dance to Beach House.
It felt like... levitation.
One of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard!
Holds a lot of meaning since my first love died this year.
RIP 🖤 hope you’ve found your peace now.
the best beach house song for me personally..its out of this world
This song has become a part of me.. ❤️
I hold my baby and dance to this song, it has a new meaning to me after I had him last year. All the places I want to take him, going anywhere he wants to, when the "train" comes I will hold you (child birth), and the branches hanging lower (him growing too quickly). I'm seeing them in concert this Friday hopefully I won't bawl my eyes out the whole time.
one of beach house's most beautiful songs
This music gives meaning and comfort for our lives because sorrow visits us all.Sometimes it takes us with it when it goes.
You and me with our long hair on the gold wall
After midnight we could feel it all
I'd go anywhere you want to
You should see there's a place I want to take you
When the train comes I will hold you
(When the train comes I will hold you)
'Cause you blow my mind
On the bridge levitating 'cause we want to
When the unknown will surround you
(When the unknown will surround you)
There is no right time
There is no right time
The branches of the trees
They will hang lower now
You will grow too quick
Then you will get over it
The branches of the trees
They will hang lower now
There's a place I want to take you
When the unknown will surround you
There's a place I want to take you (were you high)
When they knocked on the door looking for you
When the unknown will surround you (take my hand)
As our bodies lift up slowly
There's a place I want to take you (were you high)
When they knocked on the door looking for you
When the unknown will surround you (take my hand)
As our bodies lift up slowly
There's a place I want to take you
honestly this gets me so pumped. that tambourine. this song is how I fell in love with this band.
This song popped my depression cherry.
+Dennis Reynolds what in the world
Edan Khan Note that the album is called "Depression Cherry", hur dur.

God, i'm so glad that i found this band.
Saw Beach House Live last fall for the first time at a sold out show and cried the entire set. Can't say that's happend at any other show I've been to. Such an uplifting experience!
Seeing them live in Grand Rapids soon, this song changed my life. I cannot express my gratitude to beach house for helping me help myself ❤️❤️
I found this song a couple days ago. And holy shit. This is literally probably the best song I’ve ever heard
This is my favorite song and the most beautiful song I ever heard! When I listen to this song, I always feel like I'm levitating above tropical islands and have no problems. 🌴
Song is a trip man, this album hits all the frequencies, amazing stuff
I think this is my favorite from the album..
yeah def my fave, and 3:10 onward is such a great outro

Whenever I get my heart broken the first thing I do is run to this album
I stood in the breaking waves today, walking along the coast, listening to this song. It's the last day before school. It was pure bliss.
