    This is why I love being of Hawaiian and Filipino descent. I can make fun of other people and we'd all laugh about it. I could call my white friend a haole and he'd laugh and smile despite him not knowing what it even means.

    There's a difference about being a Filipino and being a Filipino from HI: The ones who feel this is a insult to the Filipino culture, and those who know this was funny as F**K because we can all lampoon ourselves, along with the other different nationalities, and still get along.
    LOL! at all the "this is racist" comments.

    I gotta put some context into this!
    ALL us locals in Hawaii, we all make fun of each other, the Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Caucasians. Living together for over 100 years already, and intermarrying, we hardly know whos who anymore, we hardly care
    proud hapa haole, you know we everything already
    btw, Frank is mixed. He's Portuguese, Hawaiian, Irish, Chinese, English, Spanish, and Scottish. He almost can make fun of everyone because he's everything lol

    What people need to realize is that this was a different time. Hawaii has always been a racist place, but the thing is... during the 80s and 90s, it wasn't hateful like it is now. Locals were nearly all in on the joke and were not as much of a drama queen as most people are this generation. Uncle Frank (and many other comedians) were beloved household names because we knew what was up. This locally enjoyable degree of racism does not translate well into the modern-day, but that's more of a statement of whether or not you truly understand the "aloha spirit" than it is a statement of hateful racism (which it isn't hateful at all). "Aloha spirit" is not just about a welcoming of all people or to just be nice to each other, it's about understanding one another. Part of that is a feel of friendship, and friends are typically not afraid to poke fun at each other.

    • @wandawong
      @wandawong 9 років тому +4

      foomp You are absolutely right. All millennial crybabies, academics, media pundits, etc. who attempt to deride Frank's intent or the true meaning behind the cultural traits, language and other references touched on in this song, simply do not understand Hawaii -- especially at that time. In this case, it goes much deeper than the knee-jerk racial equations that many in the US are so fond of these days. It's even possible to live in Hawaii for a very long time and never really "get it". The key social mechanism at work in the song is the use of pointed observational humor to poke fun at a particular culture, without any trace of malice. When applied evenhandedly across cultures, that humor helps defuse tensions and facilitates coexistence on a tiny island.

      I was in Hawaii during the early 90's as a military. Being a Filipino I felt so degraded by this song. Unfortunately, there is truth in it because most of the Pinoys in HI are Ilokanos which are primarily the ones who eat dogs. Most Filipinos don't and and this song does not represent an entire race. Having live most of my life in LA now I have to say Filipinos in HI generally have low self esteem compared to mainland Filipinos and even compared to Filipinos form the Philippines. They would rather be known as Hawaiian than Filipinos. Ask them what they are, they will tell you Hawaiian. Lol.

      I don't know wea you grew up but I can tell you that yes it can be VERY racist in Hawaii...
      The anger and resentment towards haoles for one is over the top. It's not every one, but it is there and it can be vicious.. but I no get why people talking about 'racist' stuff on one Frank DeLima video.... lol he's one comedian.. not one news anchor... he doing all us, not church.

    Jeez it's so sad when we can't make fun of ourselves. When we can't laugh about ourselves and the certain things that make our culture unique, I think we have lost our greatest trait to be human. It's what separates us from being animals and humans.

    Need help! I'm trying to figure out the singer/title of 1980's comedy song about living in Hawaii that is similar to Frank's favor. It was a play on the Mary Poppins song "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious." One of the lyrics went something like "Super shaka jaka laka ooku pal la roaches, you can say it couple times and make hana hou-cious."
    I grew up on Oahu and started tripping memory lane...hope someone can help.

He goes to every single school on the islands every year (he used to, anyway, I don't know about now), and he makes the kids laugh, he's wonderful. Last year, I saw him at St. Andrew's Ffair on Maui and a haole (white) woman was videoing him and he told her (very funny) that if she shows the video on the mainland, everyone is going to t'ink she one racist. It's all good fun.

    At the time that this was recorded our local comedians and artists told jokes about everyone and we local people enjoyed it because it captured the spirit of the people here. It is and was not racist. It is a part of our heritage and if you can't lighten up a bit you are doomed to taking offense to every little thing that people say. This political correct liberal movement is ruining everything.

    To everyone who is non-local: I'm reiterating.. this was not in any way or form, meant to insult Filipinos.... local people have this kind of relationship with each other here in Hawaii, where we can make jokes relating to race that may seem offensive from the sidelines, but are really just innocuous jokes. If there was ANY indication that this was insulting to them, we would not have done it. This is an inside joke for local filipinos and other locals. Sorry for the mix-up
