  • From the 1989 Broadway revival of "Gypsy," Tyne Daly, Jonathan Hadary and company in early scenes, beginning with Daly's entrance and including her first two numbers. Pro-shot, although alas not first generation. Even with not-always-reliable vocal technique, Daly remains the best revival Rose.

Saw this on Broadway...she was STELLAR! She owned the production and she excelled in EVERY aspect of it. Truly memorable from start to finish.

I totally agree that she's the best revival Rose I've seen. I still get chills thinking of her "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Absolutely took it a place that none of the other Roses I've seen have managed.

While it's very much Tyne Daly's own beautiful performance, one can hear "The Merm" fleetingly threading throughout the whole. It's definitely there and it's a lovely touch. It's wonderful when a performer has gone so deeply into a character to mine their own identification AND has the humility to mine the character's performance history and retain what still works. Daly appears to have done both here and that's what makes this -- for me -- a truly special enactment. I so wish I had seen it. Thanks for the post!

I saw this from row F seat 6- Tyne Daly was fabulous- and her Rose's Turn made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I remember seeing her in this like it was yesterday. What a thrill to see some of it again.

Tyne Daly was the quintessential Rose Hovick. Even beyond Merman, who sang the hell out of it but could not find the emotional depths. Jonathan Hadary was an excellent Herbie Sommers. This, to me, was the definitive "Gypsy".

I saw the Broadway revival with Tyne Daly and agree 100%. The show (directed by Arthur Laurents) was seamless: real music drama in every aspect. I am very glad I saw Angela Lansbury (London) and Patti LuPone (Broadway), but it's Tyne Daly and the entire company who made me experience the show whole. Glad that there are a few bits preserved on video! :)

Her range is as good as Merman's and, best of all, her sound is more expressive and more pleasant on the ears.

Stephen Hayes I have seen a few live (not Merman or Lansbury I’m sorry to say) but I was indeed blown away by Tyne

The most organic of all the Roses, the least seams, and “my” Rose. I must have seen it six times. Thank you, AS.

I think she was made to play the role. Others have done a fine job but none can match Tyne Daly.
Would love to see her as Dolly Levi.

she's a phenomenal actress, and she is perfect in this role. However I think this video puts to rest the notion that the only reason her vocals are subpar on her cast recording is because of sickness that day... if we are raving about her (as we must), I wish everyone would leave poor Michael Hayden alone (who has his vocal challenges but also killed it sometimes, including on the recording, and whose acting in Carousel is phenomenal too)... just made me think of that revival too.

Couldn't agree more: Tyne Daly in "Gypsy" and Michael Hayden in "Carousel" are the two great performances famously and undyingly criticized for their singing. Hayden did not have what would generally be considered a Billy Bigelow voice, but his performance was extremely moving and a perfect fit for Hytner's concept of little people lost in the vast universe. And I for one love Tyne Daly's singing, although I will admit that she's better here (ua-cam.com/video/YydsS9PaxYs/v-deo.html) than in "Gypsy." In "Gypsy" her singing always seemed like an extension of her acting, with no separation, and she simply WAS Rose.

Such a shame she was apparently sick during the recording sessions for the cast album. She's stronger here!

I adore Tyne and she is a phenomenal actress but this clip of her performance got on my nerves.I heard she got great reviews but I don't like her as Rose.I always thought it was a shame Liza Minnelli didn't play her. Liza had the singing and acting chops to kill mama rose! I also loved Rosalind Russell in the movie and Natalie wood but some critics didn't. It was a brilliant musical anyway
