WOW! I always enjoy watching you videos! It's great to see you pick apart this song piece by piece! There's just soo many options for what style to sing it in! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Good to see you posting again. It is somehow comforting to know that someone of your caliber that I admire as a performer and coach also has to work hard on songs. So often we see the finished product and we don't see and appreciate the work it takes to make it seem so effortless. I also appreciate how you took Megan Hiltys rendition as a springboard and made it your own, and not a copy. It also makes me appreciate Megans version seeing how much work it is to navigate the intervals and placement in this song. She had no one to guide the way. Thank you for your courage and insight for posting this. It is my hope to get some vocal lessons from you someday, Though Im a Bass/Baritone, this song is so great I would love to try it in a more crooner style.
Omg…this is why I love you! This song has been one of those that I keep pulling out to work on cuz I love it…. But still feel like it’s so heavy/pushed… love these tips on how to find that mix on each of these crazy vowels! You rock Natalie!
As a non-singer with zero musical talent, this was fascinating and informative. Megan Hilty’s performance of this song is one of my all-time favorites. Now I understand why! 😂 Thanks!
This is one of my favorite or it could my favorite video of you. Just because I love that you are coaching yourself. it’s unreal. What a beautiful voice.
love love this song! I always thought this was an incredible belting song but didn't know there are so many intricacies in there. Your coaching is so helpful!
Oh my God, I just surfed into this video from the Gaten Matazarro video noting her voice. I’m not a singer or anything but her voice is amazing! Wish I could sing like that, wowwww!
Natalie, dahling, you are amazing! You know exactly where everything is placed!! How in the world is a growl done? I have never known how to do it without scraping my cords --- a no no!! :-)
Right? I see jazz and theatre singers like casually growl, like, almost on accident sometimes and I get so mad because I haven't found it yet. I can belt and can even do decent false chord or meh fry screams but still have yet to figure out the damn jazz growl
I'm a voice teacher. I can explain how I do everything I do. Except for the growl. LoL I do not understand it. I just do it. I've also never found an explanation of it anywhere. I'm not convinced that any of us understand it. Haha
@@carr0760 Something about it remaining a mystery is comforting. :-) My voice teacher didn't know how to do it either, but then again, she taught bel canto.
Awesome! I hope some day my best choices sound even remotely as good as the ones that make you say "ew" about yourself. Lol. I would love to hear more about how you evaluate your choices, though, like what inspires you to make certain choices at certain parts of the song? Is it based on the music development arc? The musical moment? What's happening in the character's head? Or simply what "feels" right? I work with amateur singers a lot, and they often lack the kind of creative inspiration that seems intuitive for you, or maybe they just don't have the confidence to try a bunch of different things and then say "ew" for most and move on?
I'd wager strongly that it's the confidence thing. Especially when you're in a lesson or practicing alone, you don't actually have to sound good. A lot of young/insecure singers never really push themselves outside a certain comfort zone because they're afraid of sounding bad. Why they forget is that not everything is a performance and that one if the purposes of practice is having a no-stakes environment in which to try out different techniques in different places and have the responsibility of making a conscious artistic or practical choice between whatever you've tried. The experimentation takes confidence and the evaluation takes practiced critical listening.
I LOVE her stamina, support, and range. Her technique is damn near flawless. I’d kill for a vocal lesson or two from her. Natalie if you see this look at my videos of my Miley Cyrus cover and my Christina Aguilera cover. I’d love to hear your feedback!!
My musical theatre singing teacher assigned this song to me cause all the previous ones were too easy for me... Damn this one is H.A.R.D 😭😂 When I heard Natalie say "this is one of the top 3 hardest songs to sing" I felt less alone 👀🤣 Killing it as usual ❤️
LOVED this song from Smash!! It’s so fun to sing and play with. I love that you’re breaking it down, Natalie. Hopefully you can slip others in there: Let Me Be Your Star, Don’t Forget, Me, or History Is Made At Night! You have such a gift - vocally, and in how you teach 🙌🏾🎶🎵❤️
OMG I love you & love this! Thank you so much for posting this and for being down to earth, humbled & real! And damn you're talented!! I'm singing this in a Cabaret & this was helpful! This is a frigging marathon of a song to sing & my vocal chords are exhausted by the last verse! I wish I could get some personal coaching from you on how to work on your stamina to get through this song! Do you do Zoom lessons since I'm in Los Angeles?
Hey fam!! You did great! I sent a video to get coached by you and you and your team agreed I just don’t have the funds at the moment, but I will be GRATEFUL to be coached by you at least once. Can’t wait for that day! 🙌🏼👌🏽🙏🏼
Different parts of the voice are easier, im pretty sure Natalie keeps singing in and out of her passagio (vocal break area). As a male your probably singing in a higher headvoice dominant tone which makes easier. Then again I haven't heard you sing this but these are my perceptions.
Great walk through of a tricky song! Megan's version is definitive -- but Katharine McPhee has performed it live and some of her interpretation choices - particularly in the second half - are interesting in the context of this video, the lyric flubs aside: ua-cam.com/video/JmX5ubwnVVs/v-deo.html
I wish i could have learned from this vídeo 9 years ago 😅 lol. Here's my shot at it.. ua-cam.com/video/ZFijtPNeOW4/v-deo.html. Some parts are like l'm just yelling 🙈
that ✨SPIIIINE✨ tho
dodie ?? :00
Right? When she found it I instantly had a smile on my face.
DODIE 👏 AND 👏 NATALIE 👏PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE

Fascinating to watch, and so helpful to those of us who have no training and no clue how to work out a song like this. Thank you!

And...I just scared my cat in an attempt to figure out how to explain it.
This is how the song really goes. No one can tell me otherwise!
literal genius! you make it make sense🤯

Love these it teaches me so much!
every single time she says ew. SHUSH CHILD YOU ARE AMAZING DON'T EVER SAY EW (we're gonna ignore how I called her child even tho I'm younger than her)
Love it!!! This is the actual work behind "singing from the heart"!!! ❤️

You are just SO wonderful x
Love your videos!!!
Brilliant and very helpful! Thank you! 💯
Reminds me of "Summer in Ohio" from Last 5 years. What would you call this genre/style of song?

I prefer your belt to your chest voice during the building parts, but your jazzy tones are incredible!
MANY LOVE FROM FRANCE ! 💙🤍❤
Loving thisssss
@4:09 "I'm dressed for Christmas already" - lol - and your nails are green to match the theme!! :0)

Very curious as to what the other 2 most difficult songs are in your opinion
Un maestro en técnica vocal, que haga esto por favor.

That red lip!!

My throat hurts just from listening😰
Natalie will you release new music soon?
The RESONANCE omg
Eva Nobelzada makes this song easy listen to her version if you wanna be amazed
Who is the original singer of this song?
❤️
When she said ewww 😂💀
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This was already great, and then she just had to through in the crazy run on “line!” The audacity☠️
Not judging or anything at all! But as a guy, learning this song in the same key was actually much easier for me than most male theatre songs
Different parts of the voice are easier, im pretty sure Natalie keeps singing in and out of her passagio (vocal break area). As a male your probably singing in a higher headvoice dominant tone which makes easier. Then again I haven't heard you sing this but these are my perceptions.
The first interval you are over stepping, Megan is singing the interval not as wide as you are
