  • Peter Sallis appeared as Norman Clegg in all 295 episodes of “Last of the Summer Wine” and all episodes of the prequel “First of the Summer Wine”. Join me in the Yorkshire countryside and re-trace 37 years of his part in this record-breaking TV sitcom.
    The year 2023 marks 50 years since the pilot and first series of “Last of the Summer Wine” were broadcast. This series of videos is filmed in many of the well-known, and some less well-known, locations seen in the programme.

    The "Summer Wine Decanted" book is available on Amazon: www.amazon.co.... and many online book sellers - and now from the Wrinkled Stocking Tearoom, Holmfirth.

    Everyone tends to like Compo the best, but Clegg's always been my favourite.

      Roy Clarke gave Clegg a modest and understated character, but despite his protestations and misgivings, he was almost always persuaded to get involved!

    Thanks Leigh for that special episode on 'Cleggy', my favourite character from the show! Peter Sallis was just perfect in that role. (His characterization of 'Wallace' was great too!)

    I remember back in the seventies, Peter Sallis appeared in many series, being one of the regular faces on TV, often, but not exclusively, connected with the North. Of course, it was Clegg which would stick in the public's mind, a quiet, philosophical observer of he more mundane aspects of life! Marvellous performance throughout!

    The late Peter Sallis aka Norman Clegg and the late Bill Owen aka Compo Simmonite made the show last of the summer wine as a huge fan of Last of the Summer Wine and having every episode on DVD my thoughts are the show could never be the same without them both though all the actress's and actors were equally good it was Bill Owen and Peter Sallis that made the show so successful and enjoyable and funny too both late iconic actors may they both rest in peace 🕊️✌️😊

    We love this show here in the U.S. "The Secret Birthday of Norman Clegg" in Season 24 was a long-overdue episode in which Norman was the central character. I can't think of any other two actors (excluding husbands and wives lol) who worked together for so long and are buried next to each other. Must've been a great friendship in Peter's opinion, to chose to be buried next to Bill.

    Lovely video thank you so much, I ve been a fan of Last of the summer wine for donkeys years and was lucky enough to have visited Holmfirth in 2000 and paid my respects to Compo. I never copped that Auntie Wainwright's shop is the same building as the Co op in First of the summer wine. I hope to get back sometime to pay my respects to Cleggy. He died on 2nd of June 2017, by coincidence the great guitarist Andres Segovia died on the same day in 1987. Many thanks again and best wishes. Gérard lacey in Ireland.

    Norman Clegg is a character who changed a lot more than most people realise. In the early episodes, he is both `sardonic` and even `insults` Nora Batty. He deliberately smokes in the Library and later threatens a young lad on a driving simulator. Compare this to the much later Norman Clegg, who is afraid of his own shadow, Marina, Howard`s `schemes, and absolutely anything that might involve `any` sort of risk. The Norman Clegg of the final season, bears only faint resemblance to how he started.

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  Рік тому +1

      As Norman was literally there from start to finish he has a much bigger, and sometimes more obvious, character arc. I think some of the changes are just how a person develops over time - and some were side-effects of requirements for the stories. There are cultural changes: all of the original Trio smoked, and did so in the Library, there were even ashtrays in the café, it was the 1970s! We only knew Blamire for a short time, so we didn't get to see his development. Although Compo was around for over 20 years, he was fairly stable as the child-like layabout!

    • @alansmith1989
      @alansmith1989 Рік тому +1

      @@upstagedbyadog It happens with `Soap` characters often. Start off with one persona; then over a few years metamorphose into another. The contrast in Norman Clegg can best be seen when the repeats (On Channel 20 freeview) get to the end of series 31, then we`re back to the early days. Norman in those- just so different (Certainly, to me) from who he eventually became.

    The girl interested in Norman Clegg in First of the Summer Wine was named Anita Pilsworth.

    • @upstagedbyadog
      @upstagedbyadog  8 місяців тому

      That is correct; but in Last of the Summer Wine her name is not mentioned, and the only girl Clegg mentions that could be the one that walked him home was Ruby Milburn in series 17 “Desperate for a Duffield”, written about 7 years after the prequel.

      Despite a lot of research, looking at maps and comparing what you can see in the show to houses in the area, there is no definitive answer. A lot of people do think it's the same house as the next few times we see Clegg's home, but it is clearly different. However I have not given up trying to find out!
