  • Another Causeway Coast September Adventure on our Goldenline 650 Rib!
In pleasant September weather, we headed off aboard our dependable Goldenline 650 Rib . Our journey began at the Marina, situated on the River Bann in Northern Ireland. This trip promised to be an exploration of history and natural beauty along our chosen Western Causeway Coastal route.
Our initial leg took us northwards from our home base at Seatons Marina along the River Bann, including navigating through the sometimes challenging Barr Mouth. This area holds historical significance as a pivotal trade route during the 18th and 19th centuries, marking an always interesting starting point for our trip.
Turning west, we made our way towards the 13 mile long Benone Strand, passing by the charming coastal village of Castlerock. Our first floating stop near here served two purposes: to take in the stunning views and to allow Tom, our resident videographer, to capture drone footage of the historic Mussenden Temple. This neoclassical structure dating back to 1785 is perched dramatically on the edge of cliff and offers incredible sweeping vistas of the Northern Irish coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.
Continuing our journey now in an eastward direction, we passed flocks of seabirds and two surfers enjoying the waves and clean breaks.
Our Rib took us at its full speed of 40 kms, passingour beloved coastal towns of Portstewart and Portrush, each with its unique beaches, charm and lively atmosphere. Our final destination was White Rocks, known for its impressive cliffs and caves, including the Wishing Arch and the "Ace of Spades" shaped "Ace of Caves". These natural white cliff formations look somehow alive with many Safari animal shaped features including Gorillas and an Elephant through whose legs Tom started to wonder if he could successfully fly his trusty drone.
Next on our itinerary was another floating visit to the ancient Dunluce Castle, perched atop an impressive cliff with a discreet sea access cave for smuggled goods! This ruined medieval 1513 castle has a rich history marked by battles and sieges over the centuries.
Reversing our course, we made our way westward again with Tom successfully completing the Drone challenge through the Elephant Arch legs with some very skilful flying. Continuing onwards, we passed by the Skerrie Islands near Portrush on our starboard side, a haven for seabirds and a place of serene beauty.
Our return journey took us through the Barr Mouth once again, requiring consideration with some large rolling waves pushing through and between the two long piers. Safely through, we headed back to the Marina.
Our day would not have been complete without retrieving Tom's drone, which had captured the beauty of our adventure from above. With precision and a little pain to his outstretched fingers he successfully brought the drone back on board our trusty Rib and a few BandAids later all was good again with the world. Fantastic adventure.
