- The least cost path algorithm finds a path that accumulates the least 'cost' from a source to a destination. We site a hiking trail that uses slope as the cost so we can build the trail with as little slope as possible while still getting from the starting point to the other point. Other costs such as reclassifed land cover, driving time, etc. can also be used as costs. Our research team created travel surface using these techniques were we calculated travel-times through 30-meters cells (walking, driving or no data) for this surface.
