When my mother was pregnant with me, we lived in Tanzania (Tanganyika, back then). One day they were taking a ride through the bush in an open Landrover when they were surrounded by a very large herd of buffalo. Everyone climbed trees, including my pregnant mother. They tried raising a few orphans they found, including a baby hippo that had been attacked by wild dogs, but they never had much success - except for a baby warthog who survived. When we moved to SA, they left the, now grown, warthog with neighbors. Maybe that's why I've been obsessed with animals since I was a kid.

Connie Wrightsman I know what you mean. I was surprised to learn that elephants as a whole are on the nervous side of the spectrum. Horses are another large animal that also tend to the nervous side.
Absolutely, elephants in the wild or like the Jabulani herd of rescued elephants are still surrounded by the dangers of the bush, with predators threatening their young. No animal in the wild is always confident, and elephants in a herd have to think about more than just themselves as individuals.
@@melissagoetz7416 Although elephants will always be on the alert with a young calf in their care. While predators don't often target older elephants they will take the opportunity to go after the calves. Luckily Khanyisa and the other calves have good protectors in their herd x
Favourite moment? So many, but has to be sweet, thoughtful Jabu, hanging back to watch over the Herd. He was Khanyisa's first friend in the Herd and they enjoyed many "chats"!! Thank You Adine and your wonderful Carers! ❤🐘❤🙏🙏🙏

Fantastic narrative by Adine. Really enjoyed the information she gave - ellie names, what they were doing and why, etc. It helps so much in understanding more about not only the herd members, but about elephants in general. I’d never noticed the difference in the shape of the front and back feet and had no idea height can be determined by measuring the front foot spore. Thank you for going over all of this!

Timisa was carrying the water pipe and someone (anyone know who it was?) behind her decided they wanted it, so they stepped on it so it would slide off of her trunk, and then not missing a beat picked up it and expertly hung it over their right tusk (very impressive!). Hi Ann, yes right next to each other, within the same area and same reserve. So in fact Khanyisa and Lammie can see the herd where they sleep at night. And in the beginning of the integrations, some of the herd elephants would come and see Khanyisa at the orphanage fence between them.

I was wondering if the two bulls were warning the wild elephants not to come closer and that they won’t join them today bc they have a young one to protect. I’m just guessing. There are buffelo's on the corner. Danger when they are not come nearby little Khanyisa.The elphant is the king here! I think they drink water. Klaserie so beautiful. Tokwe and is now matriarch daughter of Jabulani I think. I have so much learn of you Adine I read a lot of books elephants but in real the walk with the Herd videos I see it in real. and you tell us all the way how the elephants live. Thank you so much. That's what they do in the wild... They are always migrating to a destination. Lead by the matriarch. In between winter and summer they are migrating back and forth to a destination that takes months sometimes to get to, so that's what they do, walk. ❤️
When your bulls go into musth (sp?) do you separate them from the herd or are they not much of a problem? I keep reading about bulls in breeding season being difficult so I've often wondered.

I just found out elephants only sleep about two hours a night - mostly standing up. Every three or four days they might lay down for an hour.

Some videos have lion roars in the background so there is lions around. But lions dont really go after elephants unless they are desperate.

Where is jabulani lodge located? Near the herd?
Hi Ann, yes right next to each other, within the same area and same reserve. So in fact Khanyisa and Lammie can see the herd where they sleep at night. And in the beginning of the integrations, some of the herd elephants would come and see Khanyisa at the orphanage fence between them.

Oh my goodness! I’m learning so much from Adine & the carers. I was wondering if the two bulls were warning the wild elephants not to come closer and that they won’t join them today bc they have a young one to protect. I’m just guessing. There are buffelo's on the corner. Danger when they are not come nearby little Khanyisa.The elphant is the king here! I think they drink water. Klaserie so beautiful. Tokwe and is now matriarch daughter of Jabulani I think. I have so much learn of you Adine I read a lot of books elephants but in real the walk with the Herd videos I see it in real. and you tell us all the way how the elephants live. Thank you so much. It is a very great video I shall see it many times when it can I go to Jabulani Safari I know a lot of the Herd.

Help me understand the purpose of the walk. Doesn’t look like it for grazing. Do they walk a same route each day or different.
That's what they do in the wild... They are always migrating to a destination. Lead by the matriarch. In between winter and summer they are migrating back and forth to a destination that takes months sometimes to get to, so that's what they do, walk. ❤️
It is wonderful how this herd has made its own family.
How far are the wild elephants from your reserve?
When your bulls go into musth (sp?) do you separate them from the herd or are they not much of a problem? I keep reading about bulls in breeding season being difficult so I've often wondered.
Seems like the male elephants walk with a more of a dance. than the females. They are so majestic and beautiful. I just love watching them all.
