He wanted to know how Salima Tete's journey was from a very backward village like Badkichhapar to becoming the captain of the women's hockey team and then winning the Arjuna Award. Manoj Konbegi, a resident of Lattakhaman village under Thethaitanger block of Simdega district, told us in detail when he first saw Salima Tete? What was it in Salima Tete's game that makes her different from other girls? How did Salima Tete reach Simdega from Badkichhapar? What kind of difficulties did she face on this path? Manoj Konbegi says that since 1996, he and his friends have been running an organization named Navayuvak Sangh in Lattakhaman village, situated in the middle of the forests in Thethaitanger block, which works to provide a platform to young male and female hockey talents in the district and to hone them. This organization organizes the Navayuvak Sangh Hockey Championship every year, in which male and female teams from various villages participate. In this tournament, Salima's father Sulakshan Tete used to participate from the men's team of Badkichhapar village. In the year 2010 also, this competition was held in Lattakhaman village. This time, Salima Tete also participated from Badkichhapar village. Manoj Konbegi remembers that Salima Tete was only 9 years old at that time. What was different in Salima Tete's game? In response to this question, Manoj says that I was surprised to see the speed of that 9-year-old girl on the field. Her control over the ball with the stick was superb. Not only in defence but from midfield to forward line, Salima Tete's speed and control was unforgettable. I had recognised her talent. I asked her to give trials for selection in the Sports Centre run by the Jharkhand government in Simdega. She gave the trials but was not selected.
Manoj Konbegi further says that Salima Tete used to come to participate in the Hockey Championship in Lattakhaman village every year from 2010 to 2013. I used to explain to her father that your daughter is very talented but she will not be able to go much further than this tournament. In order to get noticed by a coach, officer or mentor, it is necessary that she gets selected in the Sports Centre. Finally, in October 2013, she got admission in SS Balika Uchcha Vidyalaya in Simdega. There were two types of arrangements here. One was the Sports Centre which was run by the Sports Department. Here the players were provided with accommodation as well as food and practice facilities. The second was the Kalyan hostel run with the school, where accommodation facilities were available. Players could practice in the ground but they had to make their own arrangements for food.
