Thank you for this great video!! I've started collecting Edward Gorey books over the past few years. I remember seeing his art in the opening of PBS Masterpiece specials on TV as a kid and loved it. I hadn't heard of his illustrating War of the Worlds or of The Helpless Doorknob, so I just ordered them on Book Depository!
This was wonderful! I only have one book illustrated by Gorey, but I absolutely love his style 😊 There's a contemporary illustrator I really like called Carson Ellis, and I feel she's really indebted to Esward Gorey.
Carson Ellis is a brilliant illustrator and I often marvel at her work. Maybe I’ll do a video on showcasing her illustrations. Thank you for the lovely comment, Aaron.
Such beautiful art! It's so dark and gothic! I don't think I've ever heard of Edward Gorey before but now I want to keep an eye out for the books he illustrated.
How lovely! He has such a distinct style. I picked up Gogols Tales of Good and Evil collection at a charity sale earlier this year purely for the Gorey cover.
Gotham Book Mart was a wonderful, quintessential, one of a kind NYC book store that Gorey was intricately associated with and they acted as his publisher for most of his works. They were also the primary producers and marketers of his merchandise as well and the owning family members were the executors of his estate when he died. The free give away bookmark for the store was one of his designs, and before they closed I grabbed a handful of them. I just looked online and they go for $18-$30 a piece, if I had any idea where they presently are I would send you one! His house on Cape Cod is a museum and great fun to visit. It’s mainly about the house itself, but there are also many displays of artwork and related things from his full career. There’s a wonderful book of photographs of the house inside and out called Elephant House: Or, The Home of Edward Gorey, which is the next best thing if you can’t get there in person. This was a fun video thanks!
I’d love to visit Gorey’s home. I believe there was a biography about him which was recently published. Those bookmarks sound like gems. Truly. Thank you for the lovely comment!
She’s got the shooot. It looks quite sharp and in focus to me? Wow love the cards very game designnnn-y I feel like my dad really likes this artist… some of the illos are very familiar. This was great! I can see why you like his stuff!
Wait!!!! You never read the card story. Go back. Wait! Read the small book. Oh my, I am going to have to try to find these myself to read them. I am an artist, so I love drawings. I have grandchildren that would love these they look fantastic. Thanks for this brilliant little video. I hope I can find some of them somewhere. A great short book is The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck.
Hahaha!!!! Maybe I’ll make a whole video just laying out and reading the shuffle story. ☺️ What kind of medium do you work in? I’ll keep my eyes peeled for that Steinbeck book.
It would be great if you read the cards or that little book. I paint with acrylics and painting with my granddaughters is fantastic. Give it a try. You have an artful eye.

Thanks, Sandy!!!!
Oh no! Then you’ve never heard of Neville, who died of ennui!
Loved this. More such videos showcasing other artists would be wonderful.
Awe! Thank you. Will do! ☺️

My favorite has always been Neville, who died of ennui.
That’s a good one.
Bram Stoker was born as Abraham Stoker which is why his name is pronounced as Bram and not Brom.
Robert, letting me know his name was Abraham is incredibly helpful. Thank you.
it clearly says HELPLESS on the box, not hapless. bram, not brahms stoker.
You passed the test! Huzzah!
