Thanking you Professor Roberts! Do keep up the stellar work you are doing, I'm hoping that many more people will appreciate the damn fine work you are doing in educating us all! Cheers!
A lot of science is difficult to understand especially when it's written in mathematical equations. It has the appearance of sorcery and what we don't understand we are naturally wary of. Hopefully the modern approach of television programmes which explain science in a clear way, go a long way towards removing the myth of the mad scientist. Communication and education are the tools we need for progress.
It's weird how so many people see the wheel as the greatest step forward, but for me the use of fire was a far more important step in evolution. Bring the two together and you have Hot Wheels ;)
What if, in 1937-8, Alice R. had been the PM and Sabine H. the Chancellor? I believe what I see on screen is what they really are. I wish the world has a lot more of them. Alice and Sabine, won't you like to get together and talk about what should/could be done to save this world?
Contrasting the "facts imposed by intention" and "probabilistic truth", madness is in perceptions, usually indiscriminate and ignorant of adverse consequences, which is where the assessment begins before contrasting judgements..? "Scientist" is a category title easily separated from the categorical activity of sciencing.
To summarise: scientists aren't mad (even though I've met a few mad ones) and scientists need to share information without exaggerating (she obviously hasn't used youtube which is full of science videos)
I missed something here . . . I thought she was going to talk about the evolution of the meme of the "mad scientist". She started to, with a brief introduction to Prometheus and Shelly's Frankenstein. But them she switched gears to something completely different -- how actual scientists don't fit the meme. What was this presentation supposed to be? I came for mad scientists -- where are the mad scientists!?!
After 25 years in academia, scientific research. One can say without fear of contradiction, that the majority of scientists are somewhat bonkers! Perhaps it may be prudent to add that most were probably quite normal at the start of their careers. Those employed in the fields of biochemistry are particularly touched. 100% completely off the rails, cuckoo and non compos mentis .
The media popularisation of science based material is littered with hype, 'amazings' and superlatives. Yes, let's go back to the undramatised, straightforwardness of the OU programmes I loved watching on TV sadly supplanted long ago by kitchens and cooking.
Is it possible that this meme of the mad scientist is a defensive characteristic of an evolved morality guided by our superstitious universal historic need for a god?
Alice Roberts has a beautiful mind!
And a set of jugs
Admirer in a wide sense of the concept.
@@johnbroomhead1039 yes I tried not to look or notice.....?but failed miserably!

Saw her live a couple of weeks ago, great show very interesting.
really enjoyed this. ty for upload.
I always think of professor Julius Sumner-Miller as I used to watch a science show as a kid too many years ago.
This girl has dynamics... a really entertaining and enjoyable lecturer, for sure.

It will be impossible ever to make a movie about her life .... they will not find a beautiful woman like Alice in the whole of Hollywood !!!
She's very much like my daughter, who's a science teacher.

My idea of a mad scientist is Professor Irwin Corey The World's foremost Authority 😂 look him up.
Love that dress :)
The only mad scientist I can think of is the Unabomber and he was actually right.
He was a mathematician.
Fritz Haber...
2:18 + Not so much the destruction of humanity, but the enslavement and humiliation of it.
I guess that actually, that has already happened.

dr hyde she missed out on
These days she looks like a Goth mum, and I find it a rather peculiar choice.
