NATURAL POOLS For HORSES - No Chlorine - Aquascape SWIM POND Biological Filtration

- This video is all about natural swimming pools aka recreation ponds - BUT FOR HORSES!
This was a very challenging job, we had to impress the homeowners and the HORSES with this "natural swimming pool" or now called "recreation pond".
We took measures to "horse-proof" the liner and the pond so that this pond can be enjoyed by the horses. If you watch until the end you can see Boomer is very pleased with the outcome and we are very excited to see this pond evolve into a mature ecosystem this coming year.
Not all of the plants have grown in just yet and the beneficial bacteria is still establishing itself in the wetland filter and throughout the pond. It's going through a balancing stage as we speak and will be thriving by the summer and fall.
These are a great alternative to traditional chlorinated pools or salt water pools. In our natural pools, we use a biological filtration system paired with a skimmer but on a much larger scale. This is called a Wetland Filter and an Intake Bay when building a larger ecosystem. We use the Aquascape Inc. method and equipment to build all of our water features.
In addition to the biological filtration system, we added U.V. (ultraviolet) light sterilizers, an automatic dosing system (for water treatments & natural beneficial bacteria) and a IonGen G2 filtration add-on. These boost the filtration and clarity of the water so swimming in a natural pool feels refreshing and clean.

I'm in awwwwwe of people who love their horses such that they build them a cool place, a giant pond, for them to be able to play in the water!!!! AaaaaamaZZing!
Right!? This was such a rewarding project to work on knowing it was being built for humans and horses to enjoy. Stay tuned for future updates of how the horses are enjoying the pond in a few months.
Happy horse!
My idea of all natural pond is no pumps and no filters, which allow for water plants and algae to clean the water just like a wild pond in nature. The reason your blog title caught my eye, I'm building a natural fish pond with no pump and no filter. I will have floating water plants and allow the algae to feed the fish. Where I'm located in Hawaii, we get lots of rain, so the pond will receive constant fresh water influx. Also I'm building the bottom of pond with a slope to a low spot. This will allow me to scoop net fish poop from one location. My pond will be 45'x20'. I'm excited. Great job 🤙
Dayumn that's one gorgeous horse pond, salute for y'all!
Thank you!
Of all your work, this is my favorite! Please go back in two or three years to see how it’s grown in and to film more horses living the life❣️❣️
We will absolutely be doing updates on this one for years to come. Thank you so much! We appreciate all of the love and support :)
Will do! Thanks Darrin
These are great for everyone 👍 soothing to the soul
I am glad to see they added fish to it. It is an amazing pond and you can tell the horsies are happy. Great vlog!
Thank you! Yes they’re going to add lots of fish, turtles, frogs.. and horses;)
Us too! Fish are so important for these ecosystems to work. Thank you!
Wonderful pond for the horses. Sharing to my horse mad daughter.
Thank you! Horses are awesome:)
Thanks for sharing! We love the support, and the HORSES :)
Very nice project!!! Good idea for the horses! Good work with the filtration system as well!!! When I'm rich I'll do it for my dogs.
YES! I am trying to plan an obstacle course - and we have two natural pooling areas that I want to make horse friendly so we can use it for our training! I have been watching Aquascape for a YEAR looking for ideas. I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!
Now all I have to do is set up a GoFundMe to get it excavated, dredged, built, etc. LOL. No problem.
Amazing idea!! These horses will be in heaven. The Aquascape system would be the way to go for sure :)
@@carolpeterson6148 did you ever build something? I want to build a smaller scale pond.
Can you please show the pipe, jets and pump installation too...
With the drought in California how are you able to get these pools installed. Does the government have many regulations?
It’s a very beautiful project. I have seen several of your projects they are wonderful
Thank you! no restrictions here, these water features can actually consume much les water then lawns and standard landscaping
@@chadmorrill1850 well that’s good to know. Thank you.
Beautiful.
Thanks Dixie!
Very cool guys.
The underwater view with the koi 🥰😍😍😍
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!! Great job Chad!!!
Thank you so much!!! Couldn't be happier repping @aquascape systems, you guys are the best!
love the clean water
Beautiful 😍 horse 🐎 😍 ❤ Pons enjoy!
Beautifully Done !!! Looks super natural and fishes were thrilled with thier new home as well !!! Bravi to all!!!👏🐎🌊🐡🌳🌿
Thank you!
Been planning a little pond for the horses to cool off and was wondering what to do for good footing. Video was nice and informative. Tx
Absolutely amazing Chad!
Thank you Heather! :)
That is so cool! Hopefully next up: Llama Pond.
Let’s do it! Can llamas swim?
Wow! Huge project and very nicely done! Good information too.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you Sern :)
Nice job 👏 beautiful horse pond too.
I mean I am like happy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ very enjoy the video. positive atmosphere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Sweet job Chad 🤙🤙
Thanks Jaak!
AMAZING JOB! Looks great guys!
Thanks so much Derek!
Luv it
Thanks!
Very beautiful Chad!
I love it !!
🙏🏻thank you! Couldn’t have done it without my amazing team
@@chadmorrill1850 Totally agree. One day I will build my dream Natural and organic pond
💚💙💚💙💚
Job well done
Thank you Mike!!
Hopefully the filtration system is powerful enough to clean up all the feces the horses are gonna drop in the water
We built a very large filtration system on this pone. But the horses only swim supervised, the stable isn't in the same area as the pond, so they only go in with people and so far no accidents in the pond. :)
@@CaliforniaWaterscapesHorses poop about 30lbs a day. I'd like to know the long term effects of the nitrogen
wow wow wow! a pool for horses while I, a human, starve, and don't have a home! Yay!
LOVE THIS!!! My favorite pond that ive seen on youtube
Thanks Erika!
I LOVE THIS!
C'est magnifique, bravo !
Thank you!
Omg this is my dream! But u have so many questions now 😅
Like.. what is the source of water?
And when it overflowed, where?
What if I have a slope, with a well up on a hill. Eventually I am thinking overflow can go into feeding the garden.
If you can make another version of this video, like technical details, so someone can build along.
Thank you for amazing results
I wish y’all were in KY cuz I could use this for sure!!
Very cool! This look like river in nature... Interesting for next recreation pond
Thank you Aziz :)
your video shots cut way too fast, i had to slow it down to see what you are actually showing, other than that, awesome job that crew did and Im stoked for the horses that get to actually enjoy water, so little just sit in a stall day after day.
Thanks Beach! and we appreciate the feedback🤙🏻
Yessss it’s extremely hot in Riverside during the long summer months. Its very rewarding to help out the horses as well as the local wildlife that need fresh clean water
Gorgeous pond!
Thanks!
Someone else IS doing this. We have designed plenty of habitats for elk and moose which are larger than horses.
Absolutely amazing.
Thank you Brandon!
This is what I want for my family. ❤
Please - How much did this job cost? (I realize that it varies some, based on state, location, etc.) Also, if you're going to add fish, isn't it a good idea (or necessary), to add water purifying plants to help balance the ecosystem, feed the fish, *give them shade and shelter, and help with filtration? I know that fish dirty up a pond with their waste, and it's a matter of time before raccoons, skunks, deer, etc., visit your pond to hunt the fish (and deficate), Lastly, do people with ponds end up with mice or rat problems?
Thanks very much! ☺
I’m sure your family would love it! These 3 projects raged from $50k to $150,000.
Fish give ponds life and contribute to the echo system. Fish waste is a non factor in these ponds, biologically.. Plants are a must, more the better:)
Great work, I subscribed to your channel yesterday onwards. What filters do you use?
Love from INDIA
Double thumbs up! Have you got anything with waterbirds?
Thank you Gavin! You can build these for ducks, sure!
Wow what a beautiful idea, innovative and so functional as well as gorgeous, perfect for the horses to bathe, I absolutely love what you guys did, extraordinary creation!!
Thank you so much Silvia :)
It's so beautiful to see your passion for your job
Thanks, I ❤️ my job!
🙌 👌 👏👏👏👏👏 👷 💪💪 ✌️✌️ 🇺🇾 Uruguay 🙋🏼♂️
We are in Phoenix and want a pond!
Let’s make it happen!
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Chad!
Thank!
..you!
I want to build mine a pond but I live on the side of a mountain and am unsure how to even do it as one side would be extremely deep as well is how do you keep it clean do u use pool pumps and filters?
We use a "Wetland Filter" system developed by Aquascape Inc. This is a biological filtration system.
ua-cam.com/video/SRuHEH_iBH4/v-deo.html
That's an awesome project, indeed, and the water looks pristine. So.. no fish on it, no aquatic plants, lots of sun... will only the wetland take care of the algae on that? Would be nice to have a "follow up" episode some time from now. Thanks for sharing :)
That's the plan, we will do an update in a few months to show the wetland maturing. But there are fish and aquatic plants. That's important for this ecosystem to mature. The beneficial bacteria turns nutrients into a usable plant fertilizer for the aquatic plants, so you absolutely need those to keep this system clear! :)
There are many fish shown in the video already
Wow I love this.
Thank you :)!!!
@@CaliforniaWaterscapes I live in Bakersfield, California if you ever need a extra hand on the next pond I would love to help. I'm a full time college student at the moment.
Can you do a video on how to set up all the filters needed to keep one clean? Please or if there is one the link?
We need to make our own how-to video to setup a wetland filter system, but meanwhile, take a look at Aquascape's video on Wetland Filters. This is the same system we used straight from the manufactures step by step video. Take a look - ua-cam.com/video/SRuHEH_iBH4/v-deo.html
It looks perfect ,,,so,,,,real,,, Natural,,,
Thank you Marcos!!!
How do you guys seal up between the different roles of liner. To keep them from leaking.
We seam them together, with seaming tape and adhesive. www.aquascapeinc.com/products/liner-seam-tape
Looks great.....if any complaints would of loved to see lots of horses in that pond at same time having fun
We will do an update video in the future with more horses :)
Sir your Voice is like Ed at the ED the Pond Professor.👌👏
Haha! Amazing!
Is that okay for human too?
why wouldn't it be?
Yes, it’s a human friendly horse pond:)
Ecosystem ponds and swimming pools are chlorine-free, making them even better for you than traditional pools. It's like swimming in a natural lake.
Is kind of a Scrawny horse Good video
Thanks
Does the 272gsm geotextile fabric stop roots penetrating?
Yes
@@chadmorrill1850 Okay, thanks. A large supplier in Australia told me it wouldn’t, but I’ve heard conflicting reports..
trainers (racing & show or polo) use that for swimming them ;-)
These projects are incredible. Amazing job ! Quick question, how would you ever find a leak in the liner if it was ever punctured by the horses?
Thanks Joe! We took extra precautions to ensure the liner is protected from the horses and added additional layers of cobble stones. So this shouldn't happen and the horses have been enjoying the pond without issues for the past 6 months or so... But for any pond/pool leak, there is a specific procedure to find a leak, look in high traffic areas and let the water level drop without filling up the pond until it reaches the leak, look around the perimeter at that level, you would find it there. :) Hope that helps.
@@CaliforniaWaterscapes it does. Thank you much.
is the water always going to look so green? Or is that just the nature of it?
Its a brand new water feature so as the plants and beneficial bacteria gets established, the clearer it will get. We’ll check in and vlog this project again this fall
💯🔥💙👍
Thank youuu
👍 this is fantastic.
Wow Awesome dude, Good work
Thank you so much Azril! :)
Here in Gainesville Florida rock is $ .60 per pound. I'd love to know what the rock cost for this.
I hear rocks not easy to get there
about .15 delivered to job
@@CaliforniaWaterscapes actually the entire underground here is limestone, they have to dig up entire coral reefs to develop anything. There's giant limestone boulders just sitting in the woods and roadsides everywhere. But, that is literally the only type of natural rock found here. Still even the limestone is the same price.
Awesome build! I thought that Aquascape doesn't use lava rock in the wetlands due to the sharp edges. What do you do use to protect the liner? Another layer of underlayment? I am in Israel and lava rock is the cheapest and I thought most surface area. TIA
Yes, underlayment would work to protect the liner.
What type of liner is it I wonder
Aquascape 45 mil EPDM Pond Liner - this is made by Firestone and distributed by Aquascape
@@CaliforniaWaterscapes cheers thanks
Could the filter handle horse poop?
Yes, biological filtration
Only in america, wow, awesome
Thanks!
Great video! I got a. 13 acre farm in Upstate NY. I want to get this made up for my new farm!
call us! we travel ✈️ 818-252-0098
That's what I'm talking bout!
Thank you!!
@@CaliforniaWaterscapes you're very welcome
Is this rich life?
Lava Rock Rocks.
How much would it cost to reline everything in 30 years? Or will it need to be? Will you need to remove everything and redo it since its not as easy as a regular pool
You’ll get 40 to 50 years of life out of .45 mil EPMD liner protected by rock and gravel from the sun
Why the music in the background? Really detracts from the video.
What about the drought?
Before we did this project the water would seep in the ground for years. Now with the new rubber liner installed the homeowner conserves thousands of gallons a year
Ponds are closed systems that don’t waste water. Ponds evaporate 0.25"-1" of water a week, in contrast with a lawn / landscaping can use 2"-4" a week easily. They require water only to replace what’s lost by evaporation. In general, ponds use about 50% less water than lawns and other gardens. All water added to the aquatic system stays there. It doesn’t become runoff, carrying fertilizers and pesticides into the sewer systems, groundwater or waterways.

@Lamp in Deep Waters Why don’t you ask Gov. Newsom what he’s done to capture and store rainwater? Ask him about the desalination plants and why he continues to allow the release of trillions of gallons of freshwater for the Delta smelt. Ask our inept politicians what they’ve done to plan for the inevitable droughts in California-they’re nothing new.
Hello are you able to take a work in India?
Hi no Indias a bit too far from home for us to travel
Looks amazing, but you talk way too much in the video lol
If this is for horses, why so deep
The client wanted it deep enough so the horses can swim without hitting the bottom
Isn't there a water shortage in California?

You can lead a horse to water...
Really hard to hear the dialogue
Too much stones
Beautiful but the music on this video is the pits.
Please REMOVE the music from future videos. The balance against your narration is wrong and the music is sure offend some or all.
BAHAHAHAHAHA.
1 remove clay.
2. Install plastic.
How very cali.
no clay on this project
It's soil not dirt. dirt is short for dirty. No offence but a professional landscaper shouldn't be calling it dirt.
and don't talk too much
So....these Horses get a pool....good for these horses ...and the Farmers are whining about the drought and that they couldn’t feed their cattle or dairy cows?🤔 there seems to be something wrong 🤷🏻♀️ is it wrong to build such a pool that you have to fill up constantly with ground/drinking water in a area where it doesn’t rain enough to keep it fully filled? Or is it wrong that the Farmers have problems because of a drought?
Yep good for the horses, environment, water conservation and the farmers…
the client is a farmer actually that recently purchased the property. This area was an existing irrigation channel, that the city would randomly turns on, filling the channel to water crops..
if you watched the beginning of my vlog you’d see that we had to dig down to sandy soil in order to have a solid base to lay a new rubber liner down. Now, with the liner installed we are conserving ALL of his water allowing more water to flow down channel for his and neighboring crop irrigation.
We’re now conserving hundreds of thousands of gallons of water with this pond.💦👍🏻🌿
@Nina Jager California’s water situation has more to do with the failed policies of politicians than rainfall shortages or ponds. I suggest you research how former Gov. Jerry Brown wasted billions of dollars on a train to nowhere instead of focusing on rainwater capture and storage. And how Gov. Gavin Newsom allows the continued release of trillions of gallons of fresh water into the ocean for the Delta smelt fish instead of doing what Brown failed to do. What about desalination plants? What have they done to get those built and online to provide water for humans, crops and livestock? Nothing! What is Gov. Newsom doing to secure power for residents or properly manage the forests to prevent massive wildfires? Nothing! No, Newsom is too busy playing game show host wasting millions of our tax dollars on prizes for vaccinations.YES, there IS something wrong but it’s NOT this pond for horses. It’s the pathetic governors here who can’t get their priorities straight.
Wow you got brain
