As someone who loves the Umaru-Chan series, I relate to them 100%. I hated Umaru in the first few episodes so much on how she treats her brother and spread lies to everyone about their relationship. But I kept watching just for Taihei (the brother) and I'm happy that I didn't drop it. Her character development went from "Give chips and cola so I can keep playing video games" to "I want to abandon my old life" and that sold me.

I broke my arm at school, went to the front office and they didn't do anything, they didn't give me a ice-pack, didn't call an ambulance, didn't call my parents. They just told me to sit on a couch until lunch ended then I went back to class, I now have life-long damage. Also, when I came back to class with a cast no one cared and they refused to help me.

I feel like, for me, Slice-of-Life anime really shine through when they are paired well with other genres. For eg, Natsume Yuujincho and Mushishi are among my most favourite anime coz they really combine the supernatural genre well with slice of life. Similarly, I really really enjoyed Daily lives of High School Boys, Hinamatsuri, Nichijou, Saiki K. and Barakamon coz they are paired well with comedy...

@@sweedy6647 the eye was intense pain but over quickly as the venom only affected the rods and cones (there are no pain receptors IN your eye/retina for the venom to activate). But getting shot in the butt was intense pain followed by days of tender meats pain... so getting shot in the butt is a real pain in the ass.

One thing I'll add about Bokuben: We Never Learn is that whilst there was a definitive winner, the manga expands to show each main girl's story and if they had won (kinda like harem Visual Novels). So, in the end, no one's favourite girl lost in the manga as we got to see all romance routes. I wish more manga did this (...looking at you, Nisekoi and Quintessential Quintuplets...).
Can definitely relate to the Aki freaking out about the price of going to the hospital. I broke my collarbone a year ago and I made sure not to take an ambulance cause I found out it cost over a $1000 dollars. Got to the hospital, they only gave me an ibuprofen when I first came in, sat me in a bed after waiting over an hour in the lobby, gave me a shot for the pain, put me in a sling, and finally did an X-ray. My insurance didn’t cover anything cause I was out of state and I’m still paying off the over 3k medical bill for the hospital 🙃. Fuck America’s health care system man.
I kept ignoring my medical bills and a year or so later got a letter saying this was the final notice and they were going to close my file and stop trying to collect. Lmao but they also had sent an extra envelope saying if I had any final payments I could sent them in.
It's absolutely insane honestly.. in Denmark you go to the doctors, the hospital etc and ride the ambulance for free. But we also pay almost 50% in taxes, but that means pretty much free healthcare for everyone. Including those who don't have a lot of money.

as someone caught up in the manga of uzaki, I can say that as long as she doesn't bug you its a pretty fun show as she does actually help him in ways and they build to the romance (though it takes a long time) in a pretty funny way. i have probably laughed way to hard at that manga personally.
I had the "why is manwha have such good art??" discussion with my mother who is full korean and likes reading manga and manwha, and what she basically said is the Korea is a big "aesthetic" culture. If it doesn't look good no one in korea even gives it a chance. Think about how air brushed k-pop stars always look and their extravagant music videos. The way I thought about it is think about the Attack on Titan manga's first few volumes. The art was admittedly not the best, but it succeeded cause the story was REALLY good and unique. In korea it would have never flew because the art work wouldn't have caught anyone's eye.
I don't know about printed manwha, but for webtoons it might be because of the sheer amount of competition. Like for a manga, you only have to impress an editor/publisher to get a serialization but for an online comic, you have to have readership first. You need to have a lot of readers and then you can submit to the publisher with a very slim chance of being serialized. It's very dependent on the artist themselves going out and getting readers first so having more polished artwork helps a lot.
I think the appeal of the slice of lice series, at least for me, is the fact that you can learn things, especially on an emotional level. 3-Gatsu no Lion, for example, touches a wide range of topics that I related to, and learned from, from the solitude and loneliness of the character to its struggles with his family, and its appreciation towards the warmness and bonds the Kawamoto sisters provide as the series progresses. Its something that, for me, fills and warms my heart, and is something that I haven been able to get from other genres
Connor's gripes with romance anime (which, as someone who's favorite genre IS romance, I still fully get) is exactly why Kimi ni Todoke is my favorite romance anime of all time. It's probably the most realistic romance anime out there, like, in so many ways! The main couple is great together, ALL of the characters change and evolve and grow closer throughout the story, and misunderstandings are acknowledged in universe and make the characters learn how to avoid them in the future. It's still full of characters doing dumb stuff, but you can honestly tell where they're coming from whenever they do them, and as one of the supporting characters often says: while others can for sure intervene and make the main couple get together much faster than they would on their own, they have to get to a point where they see each other as equals in order for the relationship to work out, and that's something those two can only really do by themselves. A big part of that story is the characters learning how to have a healthy and honest relationship without relying other people to do all the work for them, and that's kind of why in a way, it's also one of the best coming of age stories imo.

The way Connor looks at the others while they talk, reminds me of sitting next to the friend I fell in love with, listening to them speak, while also thinking to myself "I'm going to remain single for yet another year..." Anyway, I hope Connor finds himself someone at least as nice as he seems to be, and has as little unpleasant encounters as possible. Also, that ppt presentation sounds awesome.
I think one of my favourite slice of life anime is ReLIFE, as an adult in his late 20s the concept of redoing highschool hits me in the feels, or as Garnt would say, it hits different ya know

USA (East Coast) Here. I was unfortunate enough to need an emergency MRI and CAT Scan. I asked to see an itemized list for the costs (Which was like pulling teeth): $8000 MRI $4000 CAT Scan $500 for Dyes in the blood. $1,200 for the initial emergency room visit And they needed to keep me overnight to monitor me and to wait for results of the scans. $1000 So in around 8 hours they have charged me close to $15,000 USD. Thankfully, I was fine enough to drive myself to the emergency room initially to not pay for the Ambulance. Also, don't worry about me, my insurance covered most of that. A lot of people aren't that lucky though.

What the actual fuck? In Australia, I've had an MRI, CAT Scan, blood work and specialist appointments for various shit. I paid nothing for the MRI, CAT Scan and blood work. Specialist appointments were subsidised to about $150AUD. To see your GP, you're either bulk billed (don't pay anything), or you pay the gap between the Medicare rebate and what your doctor charges. (Eg. My doctor charges $50, $32 of that goes back into my bank account and I'm only out $18...that goes to the government) Most expensive thing I've ever paid for was 15mins of sedation with propofol - $400.
Had to get an MRI (South US) and with good insurance thanks to my dad, I still had top pay $450. It wound up inconclusive, so the specialist ($50 a visit minimum) recommended a colonoscopy and estimated $2200 for the procedure and about $400 for 30 minutes anesthesia after insurance. American medical prices are ridiculous.
The reason I like the manga is basically just the main character's reactions to all the crazy stuff Uzaki wants him to do since in college, I always had friends trying to make me do weird stuff
I read the Uzaki-chan manga and watched the 12 eps of anime and it's just like you said - if you like her personality you'll like the show. But also the interactions between her and Sakurai are sometimes really hilarious. The other 3-4 characters have some pretty funny moments as well. It's an interesting take on this type of story. Also the manga is better imo

Oh man, as soon as you guys mentioned Girls Last Tour. I personally just.. loved that show. It's so.. weird.. kind of unsettling... yet it's also oddly relaxing in a weird way too. I really enjoyed it. Just that world they are in is so fascinating to me.
I'm so glad to see them agree that Bakugo is a shit character. Also the fact that the first two romances they mentioned were Toradora and Golden Time makes me so happy, and seeing Joey say Uruka is best girl warmed my heart.
Bakugo always struck me as a character that people like to think is handled better or deeper than he actually is because of their own headcanons. In fact most of the characters in that show people expect to be handled deeper than they actually are. I remember there was some material page or something that said the acid girl was one of the characters the author was most excited to get moving. 6 years later, she finally gets her first moment to do something plot relevant, bungles her job immediately, and a boy saves her. The secret of watching anime in the genre slice of life is immersion in the atmosphere, aesthetics of what is happening. Often, anime of this genre has well-developed backgrounds and character animations. Everything in this genre is aimed at evoking a certain unique emotion. This emotion is carefree, pleasant and warm. Most of all reminiscent of nostalgia, I think. In fact, viewing slice of life is like the moment when you enter a room full of things that make you nostalgic and warm memories.
For me slice of life shows are places where you can escape from stressfull reality. When I'm watching it I think: "At least these people's life is OK".
It's also in the characters. I like Yotsubato because I find the characters charming, I like the slice of life parts of Mob Psycho because it's satisfying and inspiring to see Mob grow as a person beyond his powers, I like 3-Gatsu no Lion because I love the way the characters interact and change as time goes on, I like Nana part 1 because seeing the characters try to work out living together and interacting with no real purpose. I simply enjoy watching people living their day to day lives, which is why I like it, and of course, not everyone can enjoy. There's also the quiet aspect, as you said with atmosphere. Even if you remove all aspects of Supernatural, Tragedy, Drama, and Romance, you can enjoy it simply for the warmth, gentleness, kindness and quiet. Shows like Yuru Camp, Sweetness and Lightning, etc. Especially for shows like Yuru Camp, the warm comfort of the series just leaves you feeling good, and you take the time to not worry about any problems or drama or stress, but just bask in the light atmosphere, like going on a walk in the middle of the night or looking over a cityscape. It's like meditation in a way, but I would be willing to do it for hours and hours, not the 20 minutes I actually do it for.

I feel like, for me, Slice-of-Life anime really shine through when they are paired well with other genres. For eg, Natsume Yuujincho and Mushishi are among my most favourite anime coz they really combine the supernatural genre well with slice of life. Similarly, I really really enjoyed Daily lives of High School Boys, Hinamatsuri, Nichijou, Saiki K. and Barakamon coz they are paired well with comedy...
One aspect is also the wholesome elements I guess
I really like Kaguya-Sama because of how seamlessly it blends comedy, slice of life, and still pulls me due to the romance.

One thing I'll add about Bokuben: We Never Learn is that whilst there was a definitive winner, the manga expands to show each main girl's story and if they had won (kinda like harem Visual Novels).
So, in the end, no one's favourite girl lost in the manga as we got to see all romance routes.

Can definitely relate to the Aki freaking out about the price of going to the hospital. I broke my collarbone a year ago and I made sure not to take an ambulance cause I found out it cost over a $1000 dollars. Got to the hospital, they only gave me an ibuprofen when I first came in, sat me in a bed after waiting over an hour in the lobby, gave me a shot for the pain, put me in a sling, and finally did an X-ray. My insurance didn’t cover anything cause I was out of state and I’m still paying off the over 3k medical bill for the hospital 🙃. Fuck America’s health care system man.

as someone caught up in the manga of uzaki, I can say that as long as she doesn't bug you its a pretty fun show as she does actually help him in ways and they build to the romance (though it takes a long time) in a pretty funny way. i have probably laughed way to hard at that manga personally.

I had the "why is manwha have such good art??" discussion with my mother who is full korean and likes reading manga and manwha, and what she basically said is the Korea is a big "aesthetic" culture. If it doesn't look good no one in korea even gives it a chance. Think about how air brushed k-pop stars always look and their extravagant music videos. The way I thought about it is think about the Attack on Titan manga's first few volumes. The art was admittedly not the best, but it succeeded cause the story was REALLY good and unique. In korea it would have never flew because the art work wouldn't have caught anyone's eye.

I don't know about printed manwha, but for webtoons it might be because of the sheer amount of competition. Like for a manga, you only have to impress an editor/publisher to get a serialization but for an online comic, you have to have readership first. You need to have a lot of readers and then you can submit to the publisher with a very slim chance of being serialized. It's very dependent on the artist themselves going out and getting readers first so having more polished artwork helps a lot.

I think the appeal of the slice of lice series, at least for me, is the fact that you can learn things, especially on an emotional level. 3-Gatsu no Lion, for example, touches a wide range of topics that I related to, and learned from, from the solitude and loneliness of the character to its struggles with his family, and its appreciation towards the warmness and bonds the Kawamoto sisters provide as the series progresses. Its something that, for me, fills and warms my heart, and is something that I haven been able to get from other genres

Connor's gripes with romance anime (which, as someone who's favorite genre IS romance, I still fully get) is exactly why Kimi ni Todoke is my favorite romance anime of all time. It's probably the most realistic romance anime out there, like, in so many ways! The main couple is great together, ALL of the characters change and evolve and grow closer throughout the story, and misunderstandings are acknowledged in universe and make the characters learn how to avoid them in the future. It's still full of characters doing dumb stuff, but you can honestly tell where they're coming from whenever they do them, and as one of the supporting characters often says: while others can for sure intervene and make the main couple get together much faster than they would on their own, they have to get to a point where they see each other as equals in order for the relationship to work out, and that's something those two can only really do by themselves. A big part of that story is the characters learning how to have a healthy and honest relationship without relying other people to do all the work for them, and that's kind of why in a way, it's also one of the best coming of age stories imo.

I was unfortunate enough to need an emergency MRI and CAT Scan. I asked to see an itemized list for the costs (Which was like pulling teeth):
$8000 MRI
$4000 CAT Scan
$500 for Dyes in the blood.
$1,200 for the initial emergency room visit
And they needed to keep me overnight to monitor me and to wait for results of the scans. $1000
So in around 8 hours they have charged me close to $15,000 USD. Thankfully, I was fine enough to drive myself to the emergency room initially to not pay for the Ambulance.
Also, don't worry about me, my insurance covered most of that. A lot of people aren't that lucky though.

I paid nothing for the MRI, CAT Scan and blood work. Specialist appointments were subsidised to about $150AUD. To see your GP, you're either bulk billed (don't pay anything), or you pay the gap between the Medicare rebate and what your doctor charges. (Eg. My doctor charges $50, $32 of that goes back into my bank account and I'm only out $18...that goes to the government)
Most expensive thing I've ever paid for was 15mins of sedation with propofol - $400.
That's unfortunately about what I'd expect for healthcare here in the US.
Had to get an MRI (South US) and with good insurance thanks to my dad, I still had top pay $450. It wound up inconclusive, so the specialist ($50 a visit minimum) recommended a colonoscopy and estimated $2200 for the procedure and about $400 for 30 minutes anesthesia after insurance. American medical prices are ridiculous.
The reason I like the manga is basically just the main character's reactions to all the crazy stuff Uzaki wants him to do since in college, I always had friends trying to make me do weird stuff
I read the Uzaki-chan manga and watched the 12 eps of anime and it's just like you said - if you like her personality you'll like the show. But also the interactions between her and Sakurai are sometimes really hilarious. The other 3-4 characters have some pretty funny moments as well. It's an interesting take on this type of story. Also the manga is better imo

Also the fact that the first two romances they mentioned were Toradora and Golden Time makes me so happy, and seeing Joey say Uruka is best girl warmed my heart.
Bakugo always struck me as a character that people like to think is handled better or deeper than he actually is because of their own headcanons.
In fact most of the characters in that show people expect to be handled deeper than they actually are. I remember there was some material page or something that said the acid girl was one of the characters the author was most excited to get moving. 6 years later, she finally gets her first moment to do something plot relevant, bungles her job immediately, and a boy saves her. The secret of watching anime in the genre slice of life is immersion in the atmosphere, aesthetics of what is happening. Often, anime of this genre has well-developed backgrounds and character animations. Everything in this genre is aimed at evoking a certain unique emotion. This emotion is carefree, pleasant and warm. Most of all reminiscent of nostalgia, I think. In fact, viewing slice of life is like the moment when you enter a room full of things that make you nostalgic and warm memories.
Which is ur favourite slice of life?
For me slice of life shows are places where you can escape from stressfull reality. When I'm watching it I think: "At least these people's life is OK".
It's also in the characters. I like Yotsubato because I find the characters charming, I like the slice of life parts of Mob Psycho because it's satisfying and inspiring to see Mob grow as a person beyond his powers, I like 3-Gatsu no Lion because I love the way the characters interact and change as time goes on, I like Nana part 1 because seeing the characters try to work out living together and interacting with no real purpose. I simply enjoy watching people living their day to day lives, which is why I like it, and of course, not everyone can enjoy.
There's also the quiet aspect, as you said with atmosphere. Even if you remove all aspects of Supernatural, Tragedy, Drama, and Romance, you can enjoy it simply for the warmth, gentleness, kindness and quiet. Shows like Yuru Camp, Sweetness and Lightning, etc. Especially for shows like Yuru Camp, the warm comfort of the series just leaves you feeling good, and you take the time to not worry about any problems or drama or stress, but just bask in the light atmosphere, like going on a walk in the middle of the night or looking over a cityscape. It's like meditation in a way, but I would be willing to do it for hours and hours, not the 20 minutes I actually do it for.
Most of those anime just evoke boredom for me.
