  • While it might not have been the all-action extraveganza promised in the trailers, and definitely not one of Guy Ritchie's better films, Ministry was still a decent WW2 adventure movie. But could have been so much more.

I honestly feel like this one didn’t deserve the gaze of this channel. Movies don’t have to be ground breaking to be good. This was a perfectly fun classic feeling summer action movie, that wasn’t pushing any nonsense, had tough guys being tough and bad guys being bad and was a thoroughly entertaining and violent romp that felt at home with classic WW2 action films like the dirty dozen, guns of navarone, or Kelly’s heroes. Movies don’t have to reinvent the genre they exist in, sometimes it’s fun to just get something that’s what you paid for

There are no good writers being used in Hollywood anymore. I'll stick with rewatching the thousands of quality movies made during Hollywood's 'Studio System' where they discovered and retained a seriously talented company of writers, producers, actors, wardrobe departments, and so on. All these 'one-off' movies are very 'hit and miss' and money is far more important than quality. It's not that they don't spend enough money, it's that what they spend it on is stupid.

The reason I think it fell short of being as good as Inglourious Basterds is due to the fact we’re never really shown the villains as serious threats. We see the Nazis succeed twice against people we are led to believe won’t bend to them: Hans Landa in the opening scene with the farmer and later the Nazi who calls Michael Fassbender’s bluff at the bar after just the slightest of mistakes. In Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare it felt like they were playing on easy mode.

I find the ideal movie would be a balance between the two, despite Brad Pitt's speech in IB there was a distinct lack of 'killin nazees' until the very very end.
Gonna go with my man Steven Spielberg, he struck a great balance between Ze Germans as a threat but also actually show them being vanquished. They were cartoony but at least Indy had to run from them.
The problem with a commando raid is the nature of a raid by the allies is it naturally puts the heroes on the offensive from the start. Maybe there should have been something where they're immediately put on the backfoot like ending up in a duel with a U-boat where their ship is sunk and swim to shore with little weaponry.
IDK how precisely to do it, you want a rampage but you have to earn it. Even Rambo was on the backfoot before striking back.

Not surprised they're terrified of ever showing a female character in truly a bad light without also letting her have the last word about how sorry she is and the person she hurt the most was herself. I can see how Guy Ritchie would feel he was in no position to stand being second guessed over showing the girlboss as a traitor, or even being suspected of being a traitor. She has to be perfect.

4:10 Regarding Nazi soldiers accommodating blacks.
This was actually not uncommon among Germany and the "Nazis" and/or Wehrmacht personnel.
For example, Jesse Owens was actually taken aback when he stayed in Berlin for the '36 Olympics. Crowds of Germans rushed him in the streets asking for his autograph. He was invited by many people to drink at the same bar as regular Germans. This was something he was not accustomed to in the USA.
One of Germany's greatest fighter pilots was something of a bohemian named Hans Joachim Marseilles stationed in North Africa. Fighter pilots would be assigned a "batman", basically a butler. Hans' batman was an African named Mathias. They became great friends, would listen to jazz and smoke together. When Hans died, Mathias was front and center as they laid his body to rest.
I think the Drinker is suffering from "hyper-reality" or more appropriately "hyper-history" i.e. the simulation has become more "real" to us than the actual thing. Most people have only ever engaged with Nazis via Hollywood and popular culture, which is to say propaganda. They have probably never actually engaged with primary sources. And so they are only ever exposed to exaggerated comic book depictions of Nazis/Wehrmacht soldiers to the point that they actually believe they were in fact evil racist zombie murderers--this is far from the truth.

Let's not forget that the allied armies were not exactly welcoming to their own soldiers from non-European ethnicities (e.g. African and Indian colonial troops for the British and French, African-Americans for the US). It's not like the Germans were the only nation with dodgy racial ideologies at the time. However the exceptions you mention don't really disprove the rule, which is that for most Europeans in the 1930s and 1940s very few would have reacted to meeting a non-European as casually as if it happened every day.

But it seemed like Drinker was saying that it would have been weird for Wehrmact men to be accommodating towards blacks for any reason simply because Nazis were racist or something. Again, this is not really how most German soldiers or even Nazi party members would have behaved. Their racial policy didn't mean they had to "hate" or "ignore" or "reject" other races.

"Decent but disappointing" is exactly how I felt about this too. Not a waste of time, but not something that I'll think about much after seeing it.

    • @marychocolatefairy
      @marychocolatefairy 23 дні тому +4

Yeah, I've long thought that filmmakers should consider if people would want to say the title of their movie at the ticket stand, lol. Look at how The American Society of Youknowwhats flopped recently. Though re Shawshank, as someone that remembers well when it came out, the problem was more that it came out in an unusually crowded fall with a bunch of hyped movies- it debuted the same day as Pulp Fiction (which was THE movie to see), and also around that time we had Interview With a Vampire, Stargate, the first TNG film, etc.

My favorite genre is HIstorical Fiction, but I think WW2 has been done to death. I want to see a Korean war movie done well, but considering China owns the west now, doubt I will see that. As an aside I saw an recent South Korean movie taking place during the Korean War with Liam Neeson as General McAurthur. The plot was mostly the Chinese counter attack that drove the allies back, and a band of fighters that stayed in Seoul in order to by time for the retreating forces. Not sure if it was a true story but it was badass.

There is a TON of diversity in Warhammer. The problem is that they never consider it enough. One of the most beloved legions in warhammer are the Salamanders who are "black" (their skintone is dark because of the planet and geneseed they use for recruitment, and they are considered one of the true good guys of the grim darkness). The other faction are the Sisters of Battle who are portrayed already as awesome in every media promotion. It's not enough for the woke though.
