Hi from waterlogged Houston. I've spent the last few days constantly on youtube, since we couldn't do anything else. Wanted to say thanks for the interesting videos. It really helped keep my mind off the disaster around us.
I had a flashback when you took the Trafficmaster unit apart. Years ago when Trafficmaster were setting up and putting in all of the infrastructure they were contacted by a good friend of my father's that works for the DTI. Someone discovered that during manufacturing a slight boo boo was made and the wrong frequency was programed into both the transmitters and receivers. This was discovered after well over 1000 sites had been commissioned. The result was that Trafficmaster had to recall and re-program all the kit out on site. OOoopsy !!!! It made me chuckle when your video reminded me of the rather large screw up :-D
Some value/voltage combinations are only available in non-polarized as budget capacitors nowadays. One needs to go to the brand name capacitors for polarized, low ESR models.
I recognise the logo on those shitty electrolytics , sold in the local hobby shop. The things are absolute RUBBISH... I've had to do re-repair work when owners bring me gear they say they've fixed days ago but it 'died again'....
Hey Clive, Those capacitors are definitely non-polar. I have a squillion of those exact ones (I think I cleared out Conrad electronics of those a a while back) I use them for amplifier and arcade monitor repairs
arcadeuk yes, and they're definitely not low-esr, which is why they failed in this application. ESR is important in this case and not so much the frequency, as Clive mentioned in the video.
The caps, I gave with the circuit are identical to the one that came out. So as you can imagine it hadn't lasted very long before I replaced the cap either. Thanks for the info on them though, I'll make sure to use them somewhere appropriate.
I have the same flashlight just different branding. They sell them in Aldi from time to time. Sometimes with the barrel jack and sometimes with a micro USB. Definitely worth a look, its a good light.
I had one such abou a year ago and what a brilliant light it was. Shame that it started blinking and one day simply stopped working. I wanted to swap it for a new one but they don't sell them anymore. At least the refund was quick, straight back to my card. The torch seemed to be identical to this knock off one, providing very powerful beam of light. Maybe it got broken because I used it on my bike sometimes as it fit into the Led Lenser bicycle mount.
Here we see, an artifact from the 21st century alluding to the presence of the "Clive". We believe that the people of early 21st century worshiped the Clive at this sacred alter known as a "you" "Tube" where upon they would sacrifice their time watching adverts in order to honor the ancient Gods.
That casting looks like something from a fucking burial ground. Honestly, muddy that up a bit, give it some rust and you could probably flog it as an ancient symbol.
Nice long video! Nice to see people around you support your interesting work. Also will be nice to see you home without the limitations on the road. Safe trip home.
bigclivedotcom ... I've got 2 things to say BigYin , I just heard you talking about steel works & it brig a tear to my eye ( in a good way ) my Dad worked at Martins in Coatbridge (r.I.p ) great memorys I've got so cheers bigclive for that wee trip down memory lane ..... 2nd thing I must point out YOUR HANDS SHOULD BE THE MOST FAMOUS HANDS IN THE WORLD ..... , they've got a magicians thing/look going on with them keep up your good work
Ah the 'personalised roadwatch' - a disguised Trafficmaster box based on their Trafficmate product. Served its data on 153.2750 from roadside boxes encoded POCSAG FSK (mainly now those 'blue poles' you see which generate an MD5 hash of the reg number & track journey times between adjacent sites). Their older product with the big display worked similalry but displayed stuff on a big map. That got its data over Vodafones national paging network in POCSAG. Beacons are still fitted, network still works. The data is just now presented on apps on phones instead of dedicated devices. Trafficmaster started out at Marlborough House in Linford Wood, before moving up to a massive building (all theirs) at Cranfield - they now occupy a couple of floors at most I think, rather than the whole building. Madness with their ANPR 'blue pole' network is each pole site has its own dedicated ADSL connection. They used to be dialup with data shipped back every 5 minutes. The modem rack in MK was quite a sight! God i'm a ruddy anorak!
May even have changed again since the last time I looked but yep, they live on! Glad the show went well by the way - we've got the BBC Concert Orchestra in my theatre tonight....now, what could possibly go wrong :) haha
I keep meaning to put some batteries in my receiver to see if it still works! :-) Mine's one of these: www.uglybloke.co.uk/cb/rac%20traffic%20alert%201210.jpg
Niiiiiice! Did the RAC one need an 'information key' chip or not? I had the old Trafficmate doorwedge shaped thing, and the newer flatter one. Still around somewhere I think. Latterly I had the iQ (like an early satnav with a screen) - all of them were 'protected' by one of those keys which only told the unit an expiry date ISTR. Wound up reverse engineering the protocol because, well, I'm just sad like that & at the time I was a radio travel news geek :) All pointless now of course with Inrix (nee Trafficlink & Metro Networks) feeding data into the TMC carrier on Classic FM for your Satnav & Google doing their own traffic probing...and Waze of course. That said, Inrix are still using humans to do the editorial work for the most part. Many a long 12 hour shift doing that in between dialling into BBC Local Radio stations to depress the driving public ha
Hi Clive. Love your videos... so laid-back and natural. I've also fallen for some of your diagnostic equipment. I've had a HOPI for several years now, and several multi-meters, most of which are true RMS. I also use Weller temperature-controlled soldering (the one with the Curie-point magnetic tips). I have a 10A 35V variable bench PSU and a digital 'scope etc. One thing I didn't have (until the other day, that is) is a thermal imaging camera. But I've just bought a (slightly used) FLIR ONE for use with iPhone and iPad. I like it a lot, but am aware of its slight limitations. There is an excellent range of diagnostic gizmos from Peak Electronic Design in Buxton, Derbyshire however, none of which I have ever seen amongst your formidable arsenal. I have had one of their DCA55 units for about ten years now and it's brilliant. Well worth a look at their website (www.peakelec.co.uk/). I would think their DCA75 would be right for you. Purchased direct from Peak, their prices are a tad lower than Amazon or eBay. There are several informative videos on the Peak website, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Many thanks for your most entertaining and informative videos.
I have a couple brass wools that are full of solder. One of these days I am going to do something with them. Thinking about melting out the solder and using it to cast something.
I got that exact torch at the South of England show, speaking of the springs I lost both the bearing spring and the large battery / circuit spring. It worked great while it lasted!
Sorry the circuit wasn't in the case Clive but it was a right pain to get out, I should have just desoldered the terminals to get it out in the first place (especially since it appears not to have survived the trip to Edinburgh intact) but this was a good few years ago. It was also myself that gave the mic and "stun gun" module.
The non-parcan 3D printed lantern looks more like a Selecon SPX than a ETC Source 4 - the shape of the handle at the back on a source 4 is two distinct halves, whereas that looks like a full circle. They're both ellipsoidal profiles though, so have a very similar ... uh ... profile, as it were.
I imagine the "Falling Star" is an existing component used when assembling the more traditional firework mortar shells. The individual colors/effects are pressed into similar pellets, and then assembled around a lift charge before getting wrapped. A clever way to expand sales and offer new effects on a smaller scale!
Clive, the driver on the torch may have a memory function. You flick through the modes but half pressing the switch rather than on and off. If it has memory on the driver they normally kick in after a few seconds. So if you switch it off on say the highest brightness it should come on at that setting.
BigC that work lamp you have at the end. You say the LED is about 10W but the driver is only about 3W... Would that give the LED a longer life because it isnt being driven so hard?
The LED floodlight case looks like it could be used as a wifi antenna reflector so that you could pick up your home wifi outside in the shed/garage/workshop etc. (just an idea for the robust weatherproof case.)
You can buy a non-focusable version of that torch without charging support in Home Bargains for around £3. Other than lacking the charging port or ability to focus, it has exactly the same case and same functionality. The home bargains version comes with an adaptor for 3x AAA batteries, but it'll also happily fit a single 18650.
I bought the Brother Label Printer that was demonstrated here and I ordered the HOPI . The HOPI is not here yet and it may be in the Dublin Customs Office. I seem to be charged double VAT for some items from our Ex Member and it is a bit of a pain. I keep the Customs Demand Note and the delivery docket stating that I have paid the United Kingdom VAT.
Flashlight do not store typically charge for remembering modes. They use software to save the previous mode to eeprom and when it turns on next time it reads the previous mode from eeprom and selects next one. The ones with mode memory usually wait a few seconds before they write the "remembered mode" to eeprom. That way quick on/off swithing changes modes constanly and after it has been on for a while it stores the mode and next time it turns on in that one instead of advancing to the next one. (other software methods exist for this but this is to give you an idea of how it may typically work) Oh, the focusable light with moving led have typically very bad thermal conduction from led to the outer shell. That means they heat up and tend to not last too long untill the led has suffered and dimmed.
I've a torch that looks exactly like that, but minus the markings, in my car glove box. It does charge via a 12v car socket. Can't fault it for about £3 off eBay
They are non polar I use those ones in audio equipment; multicomp I think. Panasonic SU series ones are better tolerance though. For smps use I haven't found better caps than Panasonic FM series. These have the lowest esr and hence lowest output impedance for the supply. However worth noting that the FC series actually offer longer life.
How do I message Big Clive? I'd like to recommend you get your hands on an 'Ultra Sonic Peeler' (not for wallpaper, for your face!) and find out of it is actually ultra sonic. My wife had one and I can bloody hear it!! It's supposed to exfoliate your face with ultra sonic vibrations. I started disassembling my wife's one, but she caught me and told me to put it back together.
I think you outta put some crossbone like thing on it but made from a box cutter on one side and a lightning bolt on the other that would make it badass! Or maybe your favorite conductive screwdriver.
I have one question someone who is familiar with the Edinburgh Tattoo may be able to answer: I have seen a lot of videos online now (here in Germany I think they don't broadcast it on TV anymore) and always are there photographers on the stage. Are there photographers in every show or do recordings of the shows where there are photographers just happen to be the ones that end up on the internet? Is there a special program where mobile phones in the audience are prohibited and no photographers on the stage? That would be quite nice.
been in the trades all my life,,how you feel with a rule that reads in eights,, we in the trades feel about the same with the rule that reads in the tenths,,you can read a rule in the eights from four feet away while you’re moving,,quick for adding,,,it’s funny how your mind sets
Okay guys so i have a question after watching loads of his videos about power banks My question is Which powerbank should i get that is trusted and will last long also that will have big amount of battery
I have that exact same torch but without the "police" branding on it. I got it in spain a couple years ago for like €5, good torch. I got rid of the PoS 18650 that came with it and bought a proper one with a charger cause there was no way I was gonna plug it in to charge itself haha.
Yep a lot of places rent out blocks of empty student rooms during the summer holiday - it'll probably be a different rate than they charge to students cos they're aiming at corporate clients, conferences etc.
now that im seeing this a 4th time, that metal thing at 2:10 looks to me almost as if you could use that as a bottle opener 8:50 that flashlights a bad design cuz when you zoom it enough those wires will break off the board.
I'm surprised that cannons designed to fire off pounds of black powder and shot would be affected by firing fireworks out of the barrel. They could just stick a temporary bore liner in the cannon for the show. If this show was based in 'Merica then they would probably be firing black powder blanks. Otherwise great video mate.
IIRC from the earlier video showing them, they had multiple shots set up on each cannon. Not feasible to have a gun crew on each gun, reloading them. From a distance you probably can't make out if the flame comes from the actual bore or just next to the barrel anyways.
So, i only just noticed Between your last video and this one, a tiny hole seems to have appeared in your left thumb, and stayed there for quite some time. What happened?
Aaah. Right, with the faded bit on the front, it really gave the illusion of it being a hole into your thumb, which looked quite scary to say the least. Haha.
For the price of postage of 1 from the UK you can probsably get 10 from eBay or AliExpress. For instance: www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20170902014631&SearchText=led+dot+matrix+5x7
The Sucky Gamer Shit XLR,S are usually for balanced connections their both ok for Audio XLR,s are quite tough as in professional circles they are often dropped and often run over by various vehicles or stood on they survive
The Sucky Gamer Shit Balanced line of which XLR is but one... another being TRS, are best for noise rejection due to the shielding being separated from the signal leads. RCA is a type of unbalanced line where the shield is also the negative... not great for noise rejection in certain applications.
praestan8 yes your right of course about the Tip Ring Sleeve being another way RCA phono is ok for unbalanced connections but not really used in professional circles but still can be found for short distances

I can only speak for myself, but you bring the electron - enhanced joy sir!
Those caps say "NP" on them = non polarised

mikeselectricstuff P=NP?
No Power might be more fitting.
Против Глобал non polarized =no problem. because it can be used any way. one does not have to care about the polarity
Great video, I love the fact 5 years later your style hasn't changed. Not sure why I hadn't finished this video at the time but I'm enjoying it now.
I thought it was a Big Clive bottle opener.
I suppose it would be if you applied it with sufficient force
you can use it to smash the bottle open
I'd buy a bottle opener based on his face tbh
Hey Clive, Those capacitors are definitely non-polar. I have a squillion of those exact ones (I think I cleared out Conrad electronics of those a a while back) I use them for amplifier and arcade monitor repairs

Clive seems like a good guy
Got to love the Ultra Fite battery. It's like fake battery inception over in China
arcadeuk Is there a chance you might start uploading again? Your vids were incredibly interesting. No worries if not, just curious/hopeful.
I have the same flashlight just different branding. They sell them in Aldi from time to time. Sometimes with the barrel jack and sometimes with a micro USB.
Definitely worth a look, its a good light.
In addition to "Police" on the sleeve of that torch, the top part also includes the logo of the Communist Party of China!
I had one such abou a year ago and what a brilliant light it was. Shame that it started blinking and one day simply stopped working. The torch, a real Big Clive tear-down... exellent

Nice long video! Nice to see people around you support your interesting work. Also will be nice to see you home without the limitations on the road. Safe trip home.
Oh wow I lost it with the UltroFite cells. Epic, just beyond epic.
put LEDs in the eyes of those sculptures :)
Hmm, I think the neon indicators actually would be a better choice.

Somebody should make a bottle opener of the logo for when we want to enjoy our adult beverages.
Phew, good to hear it fits. Was my main worry.
+Matt Dennis Thanks, I greatly appreciate it. Especially with the Isle of Man being quite stormy.
That is a nice haul of swag dude!
Leatherman tools, top quality ☺
I have a couple brass wools that are full of solder. One of these days I am going to do something with them. Thinking about melting out the solder and using it to cast something.

The sculpture kind of reminds me of Saxon archaeological finds.
4:01 yes they are non polarized capacitors they say NP on them :-).
They usually have either NP for non polarized or BP for bipolar on them.
Love the castings!
Sorry the circuit wasn't in the case Clive but it was a right pain to get out, I should have just desoldered the terminals to get it out in the first place (especially since it appears not to have survived the trip to Edinburgh intact) but this was a good few years ago. The Clive casting! Slightly spooky!
Cool video Mr. Clive!
Thank you.
I used to do bronze casting back at my old college, and I made a paperweight shaped like a glass one. I did glass work too.
Saw you around Ingram street the other day mate, fan boyed a wee bit not gonna lie.
A cool idea would be to create a device from gifts (or parts of gifts) next time you do a meet and receive some
The cannon fire at the show was pretty damned good, the pyros did a great job... :)
the casting looks like the skull key (copper bones) from The Goonies
Exactly what I thought!
Someone I was talking to at the meet up did say that too.
OMG...I'm so glad I wasn't the only one that thought this.
Clive, you know you've made it big time when they put your face on top of the beer tap.
I thought that the converter would have been a sinusoidal type Royer Oscillator with a centre tapped tuned circuit.
Well, you've created my research rabbit hole of the day... I barely understand peak and PWM controllers...this will be bad... Thanks ;)
Clive, have a safe trip. Cheers
Bend the "soul patch" out a few degrees, and you have a Big Clive bottle opener! Fitting somehow...
The mouth on the cast meta big clive looks about the right size to open a bottle of beer. Was that deliberate? Have you tried it?
Do they do a lot of metal casting in the technical department?
That particular theatre's technical department is VERY technical.
The hole in the casting makes me think you could turn it into a water feature, or make it smoke😂
Clive, I have a project for one of your fantastic tear downs. I just need to know where to send it. Thanks
So when are you going outside and lighting the pyrotechnics?
Flashlight do not store typically charge for remembering modes. They use software to save the previous mode to eeprom and when it turns on next time it reads the previous mode from eeprom and selects next one.

Oh, the focusable light with moving led have typically very bad thermal conduction from led to the outer shell. That means they heat up and tend to not last too long untill the led has suffered and dimmed.
I've got one of those rulers from Digi-key. They're pretty cool!
Is the room you stayed in going to have a Blue Plaque installed by it? "BIG CLIVE STAYED HERE AUGUST 2017"
What's the amperage limit of that big clive logo fuse?
I wonder if you could make a cubesat antenna that's self contained by using that spiral PCB method...hm.
I've a torch that looks exactly like that, but minus the markings, in my car glove box. It does charge via a 12v car socket. Can't fault it for about £3 off eBay
So is the cast metal Clive head made of tin/lead/silver/copper/antimony solder type material?
i guess its the stubborn clivemetally type.. with moodvarying melting temperature ;-)
What happened to your left thumbnail?
I just mounted 2 of those grey security lights to the inside and outside of my woodshed.
Excited for the upcoming Clive/MF DOOM collab!
Does Clive live on the isle of Mann ??? interesting they have a motorbike race there .
I have the same ruler. Digi-Key and some other manufacturers make nearly identical ones.
What brand was that jacket, I would like to get one.
Driza-bone
thanks
There are abrasive discs for cutting and for grinding. Don't use the wrong one for the job or you get exciting times happening.
P.s. I thought that was an AvE ruler!
I misread the title as "exploding" gifts. Now i am disappointed.
It was drilled into me as part of NVQ level 2 to never grind aluminium as it clogs the blade and can cause it to explode!!
The other thing not to do was to mix oxygen and oil as it explodes!!
Lost-wax (or hard plastic) casting is a lot of fun. :)
I rly hope you tried using the metal logo as a bottle opener! :D
I think you outta put some crossbone like thing on it but made from a box cutter on one side and a lightning bolt on the other that would make it badass! Or maybe your favorite conductive screwdriver.
Does it open beer bottles?
Did you stay at pollock halls or some other student accommodation?
+Thomas Hawker It was Pollock Hall for the first time.

I have one of those LED torches, it says WZAIX h26 on the side
Okay guys so i have a question after watching loads of his videos about power banks
My question is Which powerbank should i get that is trusted and will last long also that will have big amount of battery
Ah, a Scot Ski Die Ode. We all now that one. Only grows in the highlands if the wind is whiffy enough.
I have that exact same torch but without the "police" branding on it. I got it in spain a couple years ago for like €5, good torch. I got rid of the PoS 18650 that came with it and bought a proper one with a charger cause there was no way I was gonna plug it in to charge itself haha.
So weird seeing my artwork in 3D print/scary casting. Awesome!
whats the cost of the Student accommodation per week or per month clive. starting uni at napier and the comute is hell thanks.
Well I can vouch for the Coffee and tea at Napier I work for Bewleys they use the Eros Coffee nice stuff :) ( though I could be a little bias )
i do enjoy a good cup of coffee.
+Delta Lambda Not sure. It's supplied during the run.
Yep a lot of places rent out blocks of empty student rooms during the summer holiday - it'll probably be a different rate than they charge to students cos they're aiming at corporate clients, conferences etc.
The metal sculpture reminds me of the "Skull Key" from The Goonies.
OMG Big Clive finally got verified!!!
Good NZ Sauvignon there :-)
Safe journey home mate :)
now that im seeing this a 4th time, that metal thing at 2:10 looks to me almost as if you could use that as a bottle opener
8:50 that flashlights a bad design cuz when you zoom it enough those wires will break off the board.
Nice you shared the gifts
Vince has a great choice of wine 😁
haha from the Montgomery! ! I did lighting there once👍
7001 is, if memory serves me correctly, an FM receiver chip.
Don't forget to remove that black dot from the desk, Clive.
So, i only just noticed Between your last video and this one, a tiny hole seems to have appeared in your left thumb, and stayed there for quite some time. What happened?
It was a blood spot under the nail due to an impact from something at work.
Aaah. Right, with the faded bit on the front, it really gave the illusion of it being a hole into your thumb, which looked quite scary to say the least. Haha.
The traffic jam thing take AAA batteries? Are you sure that's not the American version, lol.
Show?

What is better for home audio XLR vs. RCA interconnects: is there a difference?
