Wikipedia has more on the Fantastic Four film. They didn't intend to release it when they started, but by the end they realized that they actually had something worth releasing. Marvel, though, got worried that the film would kill the franchise, and offered to pay a few million dollars to buy the film so that they could destroy all copies of it.
Actually, the stock market money was still flowing in 1994, and Sean Howe says this did happen in his Marvel Comics book- apparently Avi Arad himself put the dough
From what I heard in the documentary about the Roger Corman Fantastic 4 is that the movie was supposed to be released but, at some point, a major studio wanted to make a big budget version of the movie but only if the Coremen one was shelved. By this point, it was already in post production.
I'm from Slovenia and scenes from Captain America look awfully familiar (where Cap. America steal car and ''Northern Canada'' part). And then I check IMDb and, bingo, filming locations: Yugoslavia-Slovenia! LOL!
Filming in Yugoslavia was infamously cheap in the 1980s. Conan the Barbarian was nearly made there, but the political situation was restless after Tito died, so they filmed in Spain instead. Plus, OF COURSE they wanted an excuse to film in Slovenia. It's ridiculously beautiful and fun there.
I honestly thought one of the most brilliant ideas of the first Marvel Captain America was that USO tour that gave him a reason to be wearing that outfit.
@Nicholas Cage Likewise. However, it went downhill for me after that. I hate that weird ab ribbing/trim they kept giving him in Winter Soldier onwards. I was glad when he stole the old suit from the museum, except for my concern that it was just a replica lacking any actual real protection.
most likely not but even so that shouldn't make much difference because super girl was in the 70s and the other two were in 90s so if anything super girl looks even worser
Fun fact: That "hunk" that Supergirl and Evil Lady were fighting over was played by the corporate bearded guy in Die Hard that tells Hans who John is and gets shot in the face.
Just watched this. That was amazing. I would've loved to been on the set during filming of Captain America stealing cars. And now, when Ned Beatty is checking up on you to make sure you are ok, Captain America tricks the concerned man and steals his car, leaving him stranded in the middle of nowhere. Brilliant.
Upon finishing this episode, I was so intrigued I went out and immediately found the Fantastic Four film online. And wow. I'm amazed by it honestly. One of the most incredible parts was that they managed such capable sound mixing and set design on such a low budget. You can hear extras talking in the background, people getting in and out of elevators, the music is genuinely well done and matches the tone of the scene perfectly. Dr. Reid's lab actually looks like a crazy science lab. I was immediately invested in the characters. I am not really a superhero movie fan. In fact, I am someone who generally HATES superhero movies. I hate the overedited, high gloss of modern superhero movies. They actually hurt my eyes, but as a kid I actually WAS interested in that 2000s Fantastic Four movie. This movie is honestly BETTER. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well paced, competently acted (many times truly WELL acted), decent cinematography, good lighting and shots, interesting characters and plot. Nothing not to like. In the 2000s FF, Johnny was such a flat character. In this movie, I know they criticize Johnny's acting ability but one scene really did a great job painting who Johnny was. They just discover they have powers, Johnny opens his hands and is overwhelmed by the power and his capacity for evil (you see the fire transform in his hands, foreboding laughter and music), then quickly closes his hands and says, "God help us." That is a GOOD line. And great characterization. We learn immediately Johnny is the one we've gotta keep our eye on. Truly an amazing scene for a movie that wasn't even supposed to be released.
The cgi figure of the Human Torch being hit by the ray beam is practically frame by frame rotoscoped from one of the Fleischer Superman animated shorts entitled "The Mad Scientist." Say what you want about Corman's Fantastic Four, it's the only version of the Reed / Sue relationship that makes any kind of sense. Reed was the "cute college student" that a 14-year-old Sue fantasized about someday marrying because he just happened to live in the Storm family's spare room. They aren't together because they're really suited to each other, but because Sue grew up playing house with him (at least in her head). Then they just hooked up when they were older. Reed is genuinely more interested in science than Sue, and Sue is genuinely okay with that. Their courtship has literally never been done better in any other format, including the comics.
It's been five years, but I suppose I should tip you off that what you're describing is exactly the same as their original love story from the comic books.
@@MegaZeta ...he knew that...that's why he's saying it's never been done better, including the comics...yes, that is their story, but the comics don't do a good job of portraying that dynamic.

Out of all the older comments on here you got it right the most. After seeing the Doomed! documentary it hurt to know how the film got killed so easily. There should be a Rich Evans action figure; three of them actually. One in his "Space Cop" fatigues, one in his regular TV watching clothes and one more in the "Dick the Birthday Boy" T-shirt.
Nine years late to the party, but I was so glad to find that they liked the Fantastic Four movie. I remember watching it, knowing of its reputation, and thinking: this is actually pretty entertaining and quite creatively done. Totally agree with them.
Grocery Man it’s hilarious that Sony caved and agreed to share their characters film rights before Fox did with the Fantastic Four. Sure Sony failed Spider-Man a few times but they made at least two genuinely good Spider-man films and two debatably passable films.
The Corman Fantastic Four is still far & away better than the 2000s ones. I can watch Corman's F4 without wanting to hang myself. And he didn't fucking ruin Doctor Doom.
We needed Mike here to tell us that the actor playing Human Torch was in the episode of Voyager where Janeway took those 3 misfit crew members on an away mission (The Good Shepherd?).
Rich zones out just as Jack reads about a guy who can engulf his body in flames. How is Rich supposed to be cool about Fire safety if he doesn't pay attention to a true master?
Is so amazing comming here years later and reading all those endless "Cap will defeat Thanos by pretending to be sick and then stealing his glove". Like walking onto a museum.
Saddest thing about this is that the FF cast didn't know the film wouldn't be released. I actually found an interview inside of a 90's comic I found talking with a few members of the cast saying how excited they were about the film and all the work that went into it.
Why didn't Captain America need anybody to wake him up and break him out of that ice block? Because he was awake the whole time of course. He was just... chilling.
Roger Corman's Fantastic 4 - Budget of $1 million, actually entertaining and compellingly acted, for all its B-movie-ness. 2015 Fantastic 4 - Budget of $120 million, a garbled, dull mess of gritty nonsensicality and awful pacing. In the Razzies it was nominated Worst Picture, Director, Screenplay, Prequel/Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel and Worst Combo. How?! How is this possible?! The Roger Corman wasn't even supposed to be seen! How?!
@@burningexeter4365 Well the first one was watchable, almost as cheesy as the Roger Corman film. The second one though could kill a lactose intolerant person.
I always wondered what kind of movie Corman could have made if he'd been given 100 million dollars instead of 1 million. I bet it would have been better than every other F4 movie released thus far.
1. Er...ok? I don't know if gender is relevant to this discussion. 2. That's a matter of opinion....some Jews consider someone "jewish" by birth, following down on the mothers' line. If "Race" exists, then this is a perfect example of such a thing...but then, you sound like a fucking idiot....either you know this already (and are being intellectually dishonest) or you're a fucking dumbass. As to "Jews controlling things" - what a fucking loser. I assume you're Muslim - because that's a religion that prays on ignorance - unfortunately for you and your propaganda, on these issues I am not.
Really? You sound like an intelligent person (circa 1900)...I just don't believe you are above working class....you sound properly like a child...your parents may be above working class - but if you are, the system in your country is fucked - lol....if you are above average - I pity your community.
OMG.... I had to pause the video at the Captain America scenes because I was laughing so hard I was having trouble breathing. Great video guys, I love this series.
Hollywood as a whole needs a strong dose of smaller budgets. Get back to the days of the 1980s-1990s, where people had to be creative and make a movie for $20 million. Not $200 million.
Fast forward to almost every big budget movie bombing in 2023 because Hollywood thinks the average person/family can afford to go to the theaters twice a month
Genuinely, that scene where Mr. Fantastic tries to explain the Fantastic 4's super powers based on their personalities... that actor (Alex Hyde-White, yes I did Google his credit) sells his role as Reed Richards better than any live-action actor to date, and that's... well okay, he doesn't have that much competition, but he's genuinely _fantastic_ (no pun intended) in that moment, with a bit more budget, and just the tiniest bit of confidence, there's no reason that couldn't have been a really good Fantastic Four film.
5:28 Love how slowly Jack cracks up to this incredible acting performance. His brain fought hard to ignore that what he had witnessed was real, but in the end had to surrender.
One of my favourite things about Winter Soldier is the wink they give to this 1990 movie, when after stealing a car Black Widow asks Cap “so when did Captain America learn to steal a car?”
I loved Supergirl as a kid. I thought it was awesome! Having watched it recently I'm not sure that my opinion has changed that much. It's stoopid but still awesome!
If you notice, the scene at 39:23 where The Human Torch is getting smacked around by the laser, is a reference to a similar scene from the first theatrical Superman cartoon from 1941 where the same thing happens to him.
If Mike was in this episode there would have been a ten minute tangent about Captain Jellico having a small role in the Captain America movie. Also probably ghosts.
I'm sure Supergirl was made to appeal to little girls and they just thought little girls were motivated by romantic dreams and would relate more to this than Superman. I was 11 when it came out and never saw it but my friend was utterly obsessed with it. I was a big fan of the WonderWoman TV series as a kid, but the parts that intrigued me the most were her costume and her romantic interests. When I watched shows about women I was interested in the glamour, when I watched shows about men I was interested in heroism and action. I loved Superman, but my only interest in Lois Lane was her beauty and romantic relationship with Clark, her spunk didn't interest me. Maybe it was all just conditioning by the media I consumed, but it's just how it was and I don't really feel like I missed out on anything.
I loved “Supergirl” when I was a kid. I was too young for it to offend me, I didn’t even realize it sucked. I liked it because it was a girl superhero. I also loved the “Wonder Woman” TV show for the same reason. I also have to agree about Lois, I was most interested in her romance with Superman than her as a reporter.
Exactly. I am legitimately offended for Dr. Doom by that lack of observation from them. I guess that is what happens after watching too many bad movies.
Highly unrealistic! Faye Dunaway was a hot red haired evil witch with incredible magic powers; she didn't need a spell to make someone fall in love with her! She had me at "evil"
Fun fact: Parts of Captain America were also shot in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The same place they shot Canto Bight exteriors in The Last Jedi (and Kings Landing for GOT).
Now I want "Winter Soldier" to include a scene where Steve is riding in a car with someone and pretends to be sick so he can steal the car and leave them behind.
No pressure Disney but the movie that was never meant to be released is still the best FF adaptation by miles. If you can't get this right, especially now you have all your marvel action figures to play with, then either you've screwed up spectacularly or the ghost of Jack Kirby is haunting the very idea of the FF beyond a comic.
I hope you guys never stop doing Best Of The Worst, I think I like it better than Half In The Bag even. This was a joy, I love watching you guys interact. I actually want to watch the Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie now.
I have to say, the Rich Evans joke comparing what Supergirl has done to Feminism as the equivalent to what Birth Of A Nation did for Civil Rights had me in tears 😂.
The most amazing part of this whole thing is that they found a situation in which a human being could justifiably say the words "Fantastic 4 was the best movie" with a straight face
I remember the Captain America movie being on HBO in the 90's. I watched it so many times, and thought it was a great movie, but I was nine at the time.
Thanks guys, I haven't laughed so much in a while. I also, watched Supergirl a lot as a kid as it was recorded on the same VHS tape as Star Wars. It was always a fun game to record movies from TV and cut out the commercials to save space for two movies on one tape.
So the German company that owned the rights to "Fantastic Four" in 1994 was Constantin Film. Constantin also produced the 2005 version and the Silver Surfer sequel -- Fox merely coproduced it and handled distribution. Constantin has held the rights to the property for over 20 years now, I think even they know it's kind of a dead end and the characters just don't work with the modern zeitgeist, they just produce the bare minimum number of pictures in order to keep the rights from reverting to Marvel-Disney-LucasCo. Constantin film is a relatively large German production company that produces a lot of domestic (to Germany) content and occasionally makes some larger international co-pros: the "Three Musketeers" film a couple years ago was one of theirs, as was "Downfall," "The Need for Speed," and a lot of Paul W.S. Anderson's films, like the "Resident Evil" franchise and the upcoming "Pompeii."
I still like the fantastic four idea in our age. Identity crisis, looking for your place in life, burnout or how the newest entry tried it as some kind of the fly movie before it was completely remade. I think the F4 still has potential as a movie, but you have to give it to a director with a vision, maybe something like Logan, not like the plotline, but more like what if this happened in a "real"setting where everybody can choose how to live with greyareas and not being a hero, heroes dieing without any rhyme or reason etc
I held off watching this one because I didn't want to see them rip into 'The Fantastic Four', which is genuinely one of my favorite Marvel movies. I was so pleased to see how much they liked it.
I actually enjoyed the Roger Corman version of Fantastic Four than both of the newer versions. There is a secret that Hollywood is hiding: They are thinking of remaking Flight of the Navigator.
To be "fair" to the writers of the Supergirl movie, the comics often were even worse in terms of pandering to what middle-aged men thought girls wanted. For example, Comet the Wonder Horse. "Girls like horses, right? Well, then Supergirl should have a super horse!" seems to be the entire line of thinking, and it got _weird._ Comet was a centaur cursed to become a full horse, but with superpowers...and he was in love with Supergirl. Supergirl can, of course fly, and has no need to ride even a super-powered horse, but she rides him anyway. So Supergirl is straddling a super-horse for no reason other than because she likes it, and said horse wants to bone her.
That's it. THIS is the best Best of the Worst ever (yet). Not because it's funny, but because it's entertaining. Please bring back these guys for -another- _every_ BOTW. They're the best for this series.
Did you guys know that this version of The Fantastic Four is being premiered in New Orleans at the Broad Theater, on November 2nd (a Saturday). It'll be first-come-first-served since there's rights issues with selling tickets, but it's being shown in a theater for the first time!
Reed Richards was played by Alex Hyde-White, who was in Biggles: Adventures In Time, and Johnny Storm was played by Jay Underwood, who was The Boy Who Could Fly.

The truth is that it is just mindless fluff and tedious ballgames on the TV. shows like this are what we want to see... Keep it up. best regards, an instant fan
There should be a Rich Evans action figure; three of them actually. One in his "Space Cop" fatigues, one in his regular TV watching clothes and one more in the "Dick the Birthday Boy" T-shirt.
The “Dick the birthday boy” one comes in a two pack with his arch nemesis...the Showbiz pizza bear.

I'd buy that for a dollar.
I want a Rich Evans doll wearing his "Rich wants that juicy Shaq meat" shirt.
@@justafox5356 does the _Space Cop_ one come with a miniature version of that little creepy ginger doll he always beats the shit out of?
Nine years late to the party, but I was so glad to find that they liked the Fantastic Four movie. I remember watching it, knowing of its reputation, and thinking: this is actually pretty entertaining and quite creatively done. Totally agree with them.
It's hilarious how all four of the Fantastic Four films were made for the same reason of holding onto the rights.
I'm not sure that's a fact.
Fox does everything it can to prevent Marvel from fixing their shit.
Grocery Man it’s hilarious that Sony caved and agreed to share their characters film rights before Fox did with the Fantastic Four. Sure Sony failed Spider-Man a few times but they made at least two genuinely good Spider-man films and two debatably passable films.
@@F0CKSTR0T And now look what happens when you don't surrender peacefully.
Albert Einstein famously said that the fifth Fantastic Four movie will be made with sticks and stones
The Corman Fantastic Four is still far & away better than the 2000s ones. I can watch Corman's F4 without wanting to hang myself. And he didn't fucking ruin Doctor Doom.
RaptorJesus What do you think of the 2015 fantastic 4 huh? xD
Sarper Doğan
Shoot me now, please. Gah.
+RaptorJesus Dr. Doom was a charm to see . He was Hamming it more that a can of spam.
the only Dr Doom that ever looked like Doom in a fantastic 4 movie
We needed Mike here to tell us that the actor playing Human Torch was in the episode of Voyager where Janeway took those 3 misfit crew members on an away mission (The Good Shepherd?).
Yeah, that's the one. It's an episode of the 6th season.
Always had a crush on Celeste in that episode
Captain America only super power is GTA
***** phone is like fucked up and slow so i couldnt tell
I would have said, "It was so good I wanted to make sure everyone saw it, bitch". Can't forget to add the "bitch" at the end.
Gta?
No, your Captain America/GTA joke.
here we go again
Rich zones out just as Jack reads about a guy who can engulf his body in flames. How is Rich supposed to be cool about Fire safety if he doesn't pay attention to a true master?
How crazy is it that the Roger Corman _Fantastic Four_ is actually a better movie than any of the _Fantastic Four_ movies that have been made since?
Not as crazy as how it's only half as good as the Fantastic Four movies that were made before it. Now that's crazy
“When you’re a sentient rock, it’s hard to find work in LA right now.” - just an incredible line and intro to a great joke.
The way Jack’s laugh syncs up with the transition music at 30:34 is just magical
I may not have noticed it...but *your* brain did! Good job!
That is some masterful editing.
I really love how much Jay hates Supergirl, and I equally really love how much Jack defends Supergirl
Fun Fact: The trailer to the Roger Corman Fantastic Four film was on the vhs of the first Carnosaur movie.
"Get outta the road, rock monster!" made me laugh for a solid 5 minutes. Literally had to stop the video.
The Dr Doom costume in this movie is still the best live action costume.
How?!
The Roger Corman one is more entertaining
@@burningexeter4365 Well the first one was watchable, almost as cheesy as the Roger Corman film. The second one though could kill a lactose intolerant person.
Art=/=money
The first one was good enough
I always wondered what kind of movie Corman could have made if he'd been given 100 million dollars instead of 1 million. I bet it would have been better than every other F4 movie released thus far.
why was the shirtless guy painting the tree??
Frandysworld That's what I was thinking
Back in the day, when they cut a tree limb they would paint the wound with tar. It was supposed to seal the wound but it doesn't actually work

Awww...I grew up on Supergirl. I really liked it as a kid.
Now, I am single.
Irina Rakhsha
lol wut?
He's talking about Hollywood.
Irina -- you have no right to question anyone's intelligence...you've already proved yourself a simple racist prole.
Really? You sound like an intelligent person (circa 1900)...I just don't believe you are above working class....you sound properly like a child...your parents may be above working class - but if you are, the system in your country is fucked - lol....if you are above average - I pity your community.
Rest In Peace Roger Corman
The fantastic four movie, crappy as it is, looks like it would be a decent campy TV show.
Stop the video... I'm starting to feel nauseous. *Walks around and then steals channel Captain America style*
DID BIZARRO MESS WITH THIS REALITY BECAUSE I JUST HEARD RICH EVANS CORRECT JACK ON PRONOUNCIATION
THIS.
That goes for every medium really.
He sounds like Goofy having a mental breakdown. Man straight up a-hyukked.
I can't believe that after 3 rewatches of this episode, I just now noticed that Jay synced the transition music at 30:34 with Jack's laugh.
3:15 I love that Jack refers to it as the Jessica Alba movie.
One of my favourite things about Winter Soldier is the wink they give to this 1990 movie, when after stealing a car Black Widow asks Cap “so when did Captain America learn to steal a car?”
I just dropped in from the Albert Pyun double feature episode. The prosthetics they are wearing to look young in this video are top notch.
RIP Albert, you legend - safe journeys
I still cant belive they got Moby to starr in this episode ! Would love some moore celebrity cameos.
Come on, that’s not Moby. That’s clearly Michael Stipe.
The scene at 29:57 is actually filmed in Dubrovnik, a castle called lovrijenac. That exact place is a part of the red keep in Game of Thrones!
Jack wearing that mask looks like the bad guy from Metal Gear Solid 5.
You mean Mr. Skull Face Who Has a Skull For a Face?
ahahahha that's a good one
If Mike was in this episode there would have been a ten minute tangent about Captain Jellico having a small role in the Captain America movie. Also probably ghosts.
And the elderly
*Sue showing off the costumes for the first time*
Sue: “So what do you think?”
Rich: “Try again.”
I actually almost spit out my drink 🤣
I thought he meant about that little spin she does. You know, in a classic Rich Evans "now that's a woman I wanna fuck" way.
he didn't draw the 12 for himself....
Exactly. I am legitimately offended for Dr. Doom by that lack of observation from them. I guess that is what happens after watching too many bad movies.
Glad I'm not going crazy. Thank you
I unironically believe the Roger Corman Fantastic 4 movie is the best Fantastic 4 movie ever made
The bar is not high admittedly
Cut to ten years later, and the Roger Corman Fantastic Four *still* has the most faithful take of Dr Doom
Highly unrealistic!
Faye Dunaway was a hot red haired evil witch with incredible magic powers; she didn't need a spell to make someone fall in love with her! She had me at "evil"
Sometimes I wake up and I hear in my brain "Ben! You've always been made of rocks!".
18:03 _"She's flying? She needs to fly by some PONIES! I know girls LOVE ponies!"_
lol
Fun fact: Parts of Captain America were also shot in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The same place they shot Canto Bight exteriors in The Last Jedi (and Kings Landing for GOT).
RIP Roger Corman :'(.
30:33 Jack's laughter synchronizing with the transition theme is the most beautiful thing ever
Now I want "Winter Soldier" to include a scene where Steve is riding in a car with someone and pretends to be sick so he can steal the car and leave them behind.
There was a reference to Cap stealing cars in Winter Soldier, actually.
"When did Captain America learn to steal a car?" - Black Widow
19:34 Let's take a moment to appreciate how the light glints off of Jack's head...
15:24 "They get distracted" is pretty much the perfect one-sentence summary of Supergirl.
Thanks guys, I haven't laughed so much in a while. I also, watched Supergirl a lot as a kid as it was recorded on the same VHS tape as Star Wars. It was always a fun game to record movies from TV and cut out the commercials to save space for two movies on one tape.
Can't believe Jay knew that Albert Pyun would also be dead by the Redlettermedia curse 8 years ago.
He just declared him dead 8 years early lol
They could do worse than reusing the same script and recasting and using new FX. With a good director and a little script doctoring, it could work.
So what you're saying is they suck
@@katakis1 no constantin Films is producing some quality Films. But only in german. There international movies are shit though
Dr. Doom and The Thing look pretty good, honestly. I'm a sucker for practical effects and prosthetics.
12:10
The hardest line ever drawn about bunny frolicking...
Josh, I approve
Roger Corman's Fantastic 4 might be my favorite superhero movie of all time.
Did you guys know that this version of The Fantastic Four is being premiered in New Orleans at the Broad Theater, on November 2nd (a Saturday). It'll be first-come-first-served since there's rights issues with selling tickets, but it's being shown in a theater for the first time!
Reed Richards was played by Alex Hyde-White, who was in Biggles: Adventures In Time, and Johnny Storm was played by Jay Underwood, who was The Boy Who Could Fly.
fucking fun facts!
So they've both starred in more embarrassing movies
