    That plaid LP is gorgeous. That’s a wife who knows her husband…and smart enough to get the guitar tech involved so it’s one he’ll actually play.

    To make a correction to the tech’s statement about a Rickenbacker getting stolen, John himself has stated multiple times and in his autobiography that the guitar that was stolen out of his car in front of Fantasy Records was his Gibson ES-175. He used that guitar on ‘Bayou Country’ for all of the D tuned songs like Proud Mary, Bootleg, Graveyard Train. Then he opted for the Les Paul Custom just prior to recording the ‘Green River’ album for for tracks like Bad Moon Rising, Cross Tie Walker, Commotion. His Rickenbacker 325 was used on the CCR 1st album, Bayou Country, etc, on up through at least 70, early 71, studio and live, before he gave it away. He did use another Les Paul for the songs he originally did with the 325 in standard tuning throughout the ‘71-‘72 tours. I was a “fortunate son” to see him play his Rickenbacker 325 “ACME” after getting it back after 45 years separated. Got the Tour shirt with him pictured with it too-Wolf Trap 2018

    Wow thank you for the guitar insight to one of Rocks greatest Artists - John Fogerty! Kudos to you sir for your guitar handling and knowledge! Question: If anyone knows this, on the Vietnam tribute concert 1987 what guitar is John playing, looks like a Yamaha Revstar but it also looks like a Gibson, it is a red one with what looks like racing stripes I think, or is it a Rickenbacker?

  • @leevjr686

    I purchased new, and still have 543230, a '69 LP Custom (Fretless wonder) that looks exactly like Fogerty's, including wear marks and 'gold' fading which sold for $400 in very early 1969 .... maybe March. It's not uncommon to call them '68s because these had all the 1968 refinements of the LP and essentially ARE the 1968 instrument. The one or two times I reluctantly let someone play it and I could hear it from a distance (as opposed to wearing it), I thought it was the best sounding guitar ever for the music of those days. I soon added the 1968 case for it because making only $20/gig takes a while to pay for these things. The modifications that suited me straight away included shaving the neck like a '59 for my hands, adding a gold Bigsby for 'looks' and installing a more reasonable set of medium size frets. A few years later I changed the bridge pickup to a "super humbucker". ........ BTW: I saw John play that LP close up at the first Atlanta Pop Fest, where he used the Rick too to do the CCR hits. Thanks for the video !

    The Goldtop is a ‘71. That was an odd year. It is believed that those one piece backs on those were real 1954 bodies. The binding in the cutaways were THIN and not the tapered binding on Standards and Deluxes from ‘68 on. The giveaway that it is a ‘71 is the headstock. Not as small as a fifties and the double ribbed tuners. Also in ‘71 Gibson made some Single coil Les Paul Customs ‘54 style. P90 bridge pickup, Alnico Staple neck pickup and NO maple top. So that Goldtop is a 1971.

    • @lawrencehric8173
      @lawrencehric8173 3 роки тому +1

      Right. It is a 1971 or 1972 58 reissue per Gibson history but actually is made like a 1954. It actually has a slightly thicker body than the 68 gold tops and Deluxes of the period. Plus the pickup covers are embossed "Gibson" logo as done in 71/72 years only. I've had a couple of those guitars. Really neat cross mix of 50s and 70s characteristics.

    All Customs from ‘68 on are maple topped. Gibson got it backwards as Les thought the Custom should have had the maple top all along and the Goldtop should have bee only mahogany.

  • @adamwatson6916

    68 customs did in fact have maple caps . The sandwich bodies started in 1970 and they had 4 layers. Mahogany maple mahogany and then the maple cap.

      His job is to get maintain those guitars in the best possible playing condition. Geeking out over some details is the job of unpaid virtual guitar techs of youtube.

    • @ravenslaves
      @ravenslaves 3 роки тому

      @@demokraatti It actually _is_ a part of the job.
      Here's why: At some point those guitars are going to need repairing. Pickups, pots, wiring, etc... will have to be changed out or fixed. At that point, the details will matter most. That Baseball bat guitar, for example, is using different pickups than the original Baseball bat guitar. Different sound. The wiring on a 50's Les Paul is different than the wiring on a 60's Les Paul... etc... The Tech needs to know these instruments to the finest detail possible, so that he can be the finest tech possible. In many cases, the tech knows more about the equipment than the artist.
