I have a 489 and it cuts like a champ ! Nothing is easy using old equipment. But when it breaks and you have to fix it , makes you appreciate the old technology and how they invented them .

I used to run a 488 for my Dad but we have since upgraded to a disc bine. The only time I have slipped the drive shaft out like you did I was making a left turn in the field and I was picking the cutter ip at the same time and it managed to go past the bump stop that is supposed to keep it from going to high. We welded a slightly larger pad on to the bump stop and it never went past it again.

    Nice haybine 😊
I have decades experience using them and they are pretty reliable and way cheaper to fix than a discbine.
The only pain in the ass to work on is the chain drive for the reel and replacing that bottom sprocket. The sickle guards are also fun to replace especially after the nuts wear down to a size that no longer corresponds to any socket in your tool chest hence you take a hammer and pound the closest sized impact socket onto them.
Word of advice, always check the gearboxes for oil and it should serve you well for 20+ years. A rebuilt gearbox cost almost double what your paid for the entire haybine.
Our NH 1465 haybine has skid plates with multiple holes in them just behind the sickle bar near the wheels you can adjust for setting the cut height.
Also, don't piss your money away on that specialty sickle tooth (double), the normal teeth work just fine. What usually causes hay to hang up is that the reel tines are worn down 1/4" and they aren't sweeping the cut hay off the deck like they should unless your hay is especially heavy. It really becomes an issue later on in the season when the hay becomes lighter and finer. We replaced ours last year which solved the problem.
Another thing, it's wise to keep and extra sickle bar on hand. That way, when you break a sickle tooth out all you need to do is remove the wobbler bolt and pull the sickle bar out and push the other one in and your back up and running. It's sure faster than remove the sickle guards and replacing the broken tooth. Also noticed you have no spare sickle guards in your parts box, you might want to add a couple when a rock or beer bottle bottom finds its way into your field. They tend to break off the thin top part of the sickle guard and without it no hay gets cut!
Also, Sudex (Sorghum-Sudan grass) dries out fairly quickly even if it isn't put through a mower with a conditioner due to the grass having large stems. It's clover that really presents a problem when the humidity is high 😁
As for opening a field, go around the outside of the field in a counter-clockwise direction to mow off the outside edge then start going clockwise working your way inward. Make sure you go a little slower on the second lap around the field where you mashes down the hay to give the reel time to sweep it up. Other than that, a haybine isn't that slow and will save you a ton of cash in the long run compared to an overpriced discbine which is a money pit unless your mowing several hundred acres to justify the wear/repair expenses!
You have the right idea about saving your money to farm more ground rather than being an equipment junkie in which you end up pissing your money away. The Golden Rule to farming and staying out of debt is to use the least amount of equipment possible hence you minimize your repair expenses in the long run. With the newer equipment being nothing more than overpriced junk, it's wise to use the older, reliable equipment and just make minor repairs rather than digging yourself in DEBT! Plus, you have a lathe & mill in which case you can save even more money by fabricating your own parts to avoid being financially raped by the equipment dealers.

I used to have one of those when I was doing hay here in Pa. I ended up going back to school for chemical engineering and hate it. I do not want to work for anyone so I am really thinking of firing up the old Miller roughneck or my Hobart 300 amp stick welder and mounting it on a flatbed with a drill press and a vise and finally onto my Ranger I have been working on. When I pulled it out of a mud pit on a farm in New Jersey there were holes I could put my fist through. I thought to what would Chuckee do and I spent hour and hours cutting out and butt welding metal in and now you cannot even tell there are patches!! You are awesome!

You probably dumped the clutch trying to get the machine out of the transport position causing the head to raise up by the sudden jerk. I had the same problem on my older 469. If you drop the head to the ground before trying to set it in work or transport mode you won’t have that issue.

I really like New Holland haybines. When taken care of they work amazing too. When I was a kid I ran the one my family had on their farm a lot it was a bit wider cut than yours and the next gen of it but other than being kinda awkward to bring behind you to a field I really like them. There is an upgrade for them I'd say anyone having them should invest it. I forget the name of the company but theres a show called the prairie farm report here in Canada and theres a small company that makes a hydraulic reverser for the reel on these. And allows you to not have to jump out of the tractor when it gets plugged up. So cleanouts take seconds with it installed. The segment is on UA-cam to find that manufacturer of that upgrade for these if my family didnt buy a discbine now and was using the sickle bar haybine that's an upgrade it absolutely wouldve gotten for us.

They were a great working machine !!!! But seen many haybines at sales with the spacers / shims still in between the rolls ! One quarter inch of spacers ! They never knew they were still cutting with the old sickle mower ( with out conditioning ! ). And many never understood the purpose of the cranks ! Nor did they install the sickle and guards properly ! It takes an entire day or two to install these items. But most just slapped the guards in.....put the sickle in....and off to the field. Can ruin a new sickle and guards in minutes if not adjusted properly. And to just grab a new guard because one broke and install it.....beats the remaining sickle to pieces !

Did you hit a bump with the head in the air hard enough to get things bouncing? The way mine floats if the right hand side of the cutter bar went down it might have been enough to lift the left side up enough to allow the shaft to slip out.

had a 488 good haybine 1000 times better than the 499 with double sickle. if the outside right wheel hits obstruction or just in a rut the big round tube of frame flexes like a tall flagpole then the header can get up past the header stop thats welded to the inner left of pole hitch area i extended that - welded some flat stock to it. important to grease the universal joint @ pto gearbox every 20 acres

  • @jerrylansbury9558

A first ! Someone who knows how to run one if these machines ! You have the header springs adjusted properly ! Most farmers have so much weight on the head / sickle bar they cant lift it off the ground. Should be able to life the header off the ground with one hand ! But..... are the spacers removed from between the rolls ? These machines were shipped with about 1/4 inch of spacers placed between the rolls. They are only for " oats ". Most farmers ran the haybine for years and never knew the spacers were suppose to be removed
If you place a sheet of paper between the rolls you should not be able to pull it out !
Your problem here is easy to fix. Might have tipe it up on end to weld or repair it though. Otherwise the machine looks clean !

    • @officialweldingfarmingarch2041

@@officialweldingfarmingarch2041 Its sad.......even today most of the hay bines I see at auctions still have the shims in....rusted in ! Even the implement dealers will say they should be in there. They have no clue ! Ive ran my hay bine for 25 years.....rolls as tight as I could get them.......and never any damage. Even though years ago the companies had issues with the vulcanization of the rubber in the rolls. Chunks came loose and the rubber came off. This is where they come up with the idea that running the rolls touching would damage them. Its just not true ! The hay lubricates and acts as cushion and there is no excess wear. Timing the rolls is much more important ! Thats where damaging the rolls also starts.
Make sure you can turn and adjust the cranks to put pressure on the rolls. Most are rusted solid. The shims......spacers......make sure you remove them from both ends of the rolls. One bolt holds them in.....and there is normally a spot to bolt them to the main frame so you never loose them.....or should I say.......in case you want to put them back in so your hay wont dry ????? ( Joking )

  • @masseymm
