I know it are just themes of the movie.
But i'm just wondering why did you choose to call it progress???
Progress would insinuate going toward something better, right?
So what's the thing that would be better?
I mean, isn't she in the end of the movie:
- alone;
- in the middle of the dessert;
- without food nor water;
- without a place to stay;
- without a job or prospect of an job;
- without a partner;
- without friends;
- without goal;
- etc.
In my estimation that would be degression not progression. Not that i don't understand the motive to flee.
Of course she flees, i mean no human can live a life of only doing what you have to do.
Every human rebels against that. I did that as well and couldn't keep going on in that way!
I always asked myself if there is a way out of this conundrum? Is there an answer to this hard problem?
Well i have found an answer to this problem!
You see, all that world religions offer is lists of things you have to do because otherways you are evil.
And all that this does is create resentment and bitterness. There is one exception to this and it's not religion, it's a men, a person!!!
2022 years ago there was born an men send by God to set us free of this conundrum. And his name was Yeshua (better know Jesus).
All that religion does is chain us down to rules but the men Yeshua sets us free. All we need to do is receive his gift.
We do that by confessing our short commings to him, asking him to help us to be enough and trust that he has paid with his blood for our short commings.
''For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.'' Romans chapter 6 vers 23.
The gift of God is that he will ignite in your hearth a flame of desire to do what is good. Then it's no strugle anymore against what you have to because you want to!!!
May our Lord and God bless you and be with you always. In Yeshua's name, Amen!!!🕊❤😇
@@jpix96 In the end of the movie it's implied she breaks free of the simulation and regains her autonomy
How were the children not real? Were they an illusion or manifestation of the mind? I had way more questions vs answers after that movie! Lol
Sorry but the Chris pine’s wife stabbing him seemed so forced and comically unnecessary. They could’ve wrote in moments where it almost vaguely seemed like Florence’s character was getting help and getting nudged in the right direction but the dude’s wife is like the main female oppressor. If she wanted to part of the resistance or she wanted to be the new person in power, the should’ve shown moments of that. Instead she just came out of nowhere and stabbed him.
agreed! it was so out of nowhere and random, like Shelley stood up for frank during the dinner party scene which made it seem like she was against Alice
@@siennaskye6760 absolutely. It literally added nothing. Definitely them trying to girlboss it.
I think she realized he was weak in that moment and took advantage. I actually saw her as a representation of the kind of women who try to control and keep other women down. Like Serena Joy in The Handmaid’s Tale. I don’t think she’s on Alice’s side. I don’t think she’s good. I think she’s hoping that she can be the powerful, admired one now.
@@erinmcguire3885 that's what I think too. I still believe that should've foreshadowed that in some way. Her being the HBIC wasn't enough to show that something like that would've happened.
@@WesleyLindsey yeah, I see your point!
I like that this is an actual analysis and not an opinion disguise as an analysis.
Just finished it and was blown away by the cinematography...the symbolism...both Florence and Harry's performances...and the film as a whole. Love your analysis. Was very helpful to put everything together ❤️
you’re one of the best movie analysts out there. just saw Men by Alex Garland, i think it’d be a great one for you to break down
I’m glad you posted this because I saw this yesterday and ended up having to leave early because I find cinemas overwhelming and before leaving completely I left twice already so missed bits in between too!! So couldn’t actually tell you the plot of the film lol
I watched the movie not long ago and i loved it ! This video summaries the best description , Big Thanks !
Hey, Lucas! Don’t you thing that earthquakes are happening as a symbol (or as a result) of confronting this simulation? Or you feel that it’s something else?
I really enjoyed your analysis. I just finished watching and, having no one right here to discuss it with in the moment, felt a need for a little 'reality check' of my own. I did not know that this was adapted from a novel but did immediately recognize 'Stepford' 2022. There are a number of your perceptions that clicked with my own (examples: the black and white image as 'conditioning' the symbolism of the child's plane, etc. ). Given that I fairly quickly recognized this movie as a 'Stepford' reboot, I presumed that the time period / setting was a virtual world. Moving forward, I would like to add this point: Yes, a patriarchal world. But, to me, much more than that. My thought: 'Invasion Body Snatchers' movie adaptations presented a slightly different perspective based upon the time period when re-booted. So, for me, as the movie proceeded, I found myself not simply focused upon Patriarchy/Feminism but our current political/cultural landscape. Order versus Chaos. The actual America presented in the movie is a tough place to live. And the choice that some individuals make in the movie? Trade facing the challenges that 'chaos' offers by retreating to a past, fantasized 'greater' America.
I think you did a great job in this video. I found it very informative and interesting. Thanks for making it!
my questions were: the earthquakes what was that all about? what did alice do once she was back in the real world- just go back to her old life with added trauma or did she alert authorities to this other dimensional world and take it all down?
I think you’ve thought about the symbolism and plot twists more than any of the filmmakers.
This was such an amazing thriller, highly recommend!
Florence Pugh and these damn “communities”
This movie definitely gives me matrix vibes.
We guessed basically almost the whole movie because we watched too much Black Mirror.
What's with Harry Styles' dorky dance?😅 I think the Saran wrap is more logical
My reading of the themes of the movie line up with yours for the most part but I still didn't care for the movie. It really dragged for me and then just info dumps in the last fifteen minutes. I think way too much runtime was devoted to her hallucinations if the explanation is limited to her subconscious rebelling against the simulation. And Shelley killing Frank with no setup or explanation is very jarring as well. I am fine with movies with ending open to interpretation but when too many things are open to interpretation it can muddy the message of the film.
So the movie is pretty much saying when women take over it will be a utopia?? I mean it's not even subtle lol.
NWO, AI, exactly what is coming.
Yeah this movie sucked.
I still think about the fact that the machine, asked Jack if he already had an “Pre-Existing relationship with Alice already. ” Implying that a man could have kidnapped some random woman, or ex girlfriend, and made her be his wife. 😳
I remember seeing a bat in his hands and him dragging her, it was different
@@MissRoachyshe might have left him then he did that?
I had no idea it was based on a book! This was an amazing breakdown of the film
Thank you so much! Yeah, it’s very heavily inspired by that novel and it was cool to see the similarities and differences in the theatre. Thank you for watching!!
@@lucasblue20 you mean “shamelessly rips off” the novel.
Mostly every movie ever...was based on a book or something else that was based on one.
That's because it wasn't. When a movie is based on a book, that book is credited as the source material for the movie. This movie ripped off the premise of The Stepford Wives and Jordan Peele's Get Out. There is a difference.
Thank you for your review! I hadn’t connected the dots between the plane crash and Margaret’s son’s toy plane before, and hadn’t seen anyone else do so in their reviews. I feel like this makes the plane crash scene less confusing!!!
Alice's husband says the children aren't real but was Margaret's child real? And if they weren't what were they, manifestations or illusions!? Stepford* Wive's was much clearer. I don't watch much TV or movies, I watched this one in 3 sessions, so I like to walk away enjoying a good story vs asking what did I just watch!? Lol
I absolutely loved this movie, I want to watch it again.
Oooh yes all men bad woman good....ok escape to what what and why if woman having careers single mom depressed and stressed high body count and what that's freedom that's the good life. Wow

Yours is, by far, the best analysis of the movie I’ve heard. Nice work!
Great analysis and explanation. I love the way you break the movies into themes for better understanding. Thank you!
Thank you!! I’m so happy you connect with the structure, I always thought that was a fun way to deliver it. This means so much, thank you for watching!!
I love this film, it made me feel unsafe and even questioned my existence. Amazing
Very good analysis. When I saw the trailer, I automatically thought of The Stepford Wives. Love that you explained everything in detail yet succinctly. I just subscribed 👍👍
It's like the stepford wives meets the matrix
You knew …. Instantly if you saw the Stepford wives
I was thinking this movie was based on The Stepford wives. And I’m looking forward to seeing this version. I’m Gen X so I grew up with the term “Stepford Wife” and knew the term before I saw the original
I just want to point out that your final take on the ending is your assumption. We hear what sounds like her waking up but have no idea if she does and what happens after. It's entirely possible she could have been better off staying inside, as who knows how long they've been gone and what her physical or mental state is like coming out of that. The men got to take breaks everyday but she's been "plugged in" for seemingly weeks. Not to mention does she still have a job waiting for her, seems like she was abducted by Jack, so did everyone presume her dead? also does time flow the same way there, I don't see how he can earn enough to keep the lights on and everything within a work day, especially considering he's sort of depicted as lazy.
Point is we have no idea what happened after she touched the HQ. It's all our imagination.
you are thinking too hard. just enjoy it for what it is.
@@SimGuruChenbot that's not how critique and analysis works
this is a great comment
I think that accepting reality no matter the state of her life is better than living a lie
When she comes out of the simulation she will find her dead husband next to her in a bedroom and I can imagine her muscle atrophy and grogginess from an induced coma for how long?? I think this is where the movie flops because some many questions not answered. In the original script they mentioned Alice finds an obituary of herself and a divorce certificate also.
Excellent analysis like always! I've heard a lot of negative things about this film, but now I'm definitely wanting to check it out.
Thank you! Yeah, the movie isn’t perfect but I definitely enjoyed it throughout, I think it’s definitely worth seeing. The performances and visuals are pretty stunning. Hope you enjoy it!
Wow, this explanation and analysis is so good! It’s so thorough and answers so many questions I couldn’t figure out. Thank you so much for this! Bless!
My pleasure! I’m so glad i could answer the questions, it’s so fulfilling to share insights and fill in the blanks, so thank you so much for watching! So happy you enjoyed!!
So what about the rumbling that happens several times in the movie I haven’t seen anyone able to explain that plot hole.
Thanks for the Ending Explained. I always wondered about that red plane crash and what Frank's wife was up to after she killed him. I also wonder about how terrifying it will be for Alice, in restraints, to wake up next to a corpse! (ha, j/k) What do you think Jack's real-world job might have been? It didn't seem he was an engineer in the real world, and it's obvious he's not really working for Frank? Just curious.
I think he didn’t have a job at all
@@elxna.662 it cost money to have an avatar, in the real world they have to have jobs I mean..so he was working somehow..he even told her at the end in the last confrontation that she didn't know how much he had to do in the real world to keep them in their avatar lifestyle.
He may have been working promoting the site for Jack maybe? Or doing some illegal shit, I'm not sure.
I thought at one point Alice talked about working extra hours to cover what Jack was doing. Since they lived out in the desert I just presumed they worked for some group contracted out by the military or something. Who had the money to create this "utopia" in the first place? Also if the husband's were working recruitment why weren't they building more homes?
Also how did going to the headquarters building help save Alice??
You did a fantastic job of explaining this movie now it makes sense
Thank you! So glad I could help!!
I’m curious where you found out it was based on this book cause I read a bunch of articles that said it’s not based on any book but it was a screenplay written in 2019 that got blacklisted then olivia picked it up
Yeah i totally see what you’re saying. I know the novel isn’t credited as the source for an adaptation, but this film was most certainly inspired by The Stepford Wives. The two stories are almost identical, and the subject matter and themes are exactly the same. My assumption is that the studio didn’t have the rights to the property, so they created a very similar story in the screenplay without direct links to character names and location names. But to me there’s no way I could believe this wasn’t inspired by the novel. And I feel like the novel really deserves its credit, at least in this video. I hope you see what I mean. And thank you for watching!
I think based on and inspired by are two very different things and it’s important to note. I know you said inspired by in the video but art inspired from art is still very much it’s on entity and it’s important to recognize that. The themes are similar but I think you could just as much argue this movie was inspired by the matrix. Or, you could say the matrix was inspired by the stepford wives-but the matrix is it’s own unique pieve. Based on versus inspired by are important distinctions in art. Just food for thought-not trying to be harsh or mean but I think the author of the original screenplay should have more credit for original thought. Great video.
@@lucasblue20 yeah its definitely inspired by Stepford Wives, the trailer was plenty to give that much away. I think this story takes even one step further because it seemed like the flashbacks to the real world suggested Alice broke up with Jack at some point, but when he signed up for the program he "selected" her to be his wife regardless.
@@RedHedyLamarr yeah, I agree with your overall point. I personally don’t really think Matrix is comparable in this situation because the storyline and characters and visuals are dramatically different in The Matrix when compared to The Stepford Wives and Don’t Worry Darling, even though there may be some thematic and conceptual overlap, which I understand. But it’s undeniable that Don’t Worry Darling’s premise, main character, visuals, wardrobe, locations, and thematic message is almost identical in many ways to The Stepford Wives (to the point that it seems so incredibly obvious). I just believe the novel really needs its credit in this case.
However, I completely agree with you that I shouldn’t have said/wrote “based on” and “original book” at the beginning, and should have only said “inspired by” throughout this video. The novel deserves its credit, but the screenwriter of DWD deserves credit too, as you’ve said. I was a little too presumptuous for sure.
Glad you enjoyed the video, and I’m really grateful you addressed this. Thank you! I’ll make sure to keep this in mind for future vids, you make a great point!
@@nosebleedseatsman9119 agreed, I feel like the trailer strongly suggests it, and the full movie confirms it. Thank you for watching!!
Hmm... If only we had examples of what society would look like in a Matriarchy lol .. oh wait we do. And it's not good.
U forgot to mention about the earthquakes. Why? If they were in a metaverse matrix type of world.
So Alice escapes at the end as in wakes up on her bed? And then presumably finds Jack dead next to her, right?
best comment ive read and only one that made sense.thats what i would've like to seen at the end then i would've said great movie great ending after watching the movie and the end explained im still scratching my head and wondering wtf happened in the end 😂😂😂
This was a great analysis. I would love to see another video where you dive into examining the comparisons between Chris Pines character and his VR world with Jordan Peterson and the incel community. Lot of stuff to unpack there!
YES!!! The incel community, alpha male youtube, red pill that's all this movie made me think of!
Really liked your breakdown! Thanks for helping me understand the plane. I couldn’t figure that one out!
seriosuly love the formats of your videos. they’re so organized and after watching a couple explanation videos covering only parts of the movie, you did it all. THANKYOU!
Wow, this is so kind of you to say, thank you so much! I'm glad I could cover everything for you, and I'm so thrilled you enjoy the style and structure. Plenty more to come just like it. Thank you so much for watching!!
All drama aside. All the sites I've read about this movie no one has said anything about the pregnant woman staying drunk.
Wondering if her name is Alice...bc she's lowkey referencing Alice In Wonderland 🤔...obviously huh..
The movie actually isn't meant to be an adaption of Stepford Wives, it's meant to be an independent take according to the director.
Hubba Hubba to Florence Pugh, very captivating. Strong movie good job by Olivia Wilde. Creative and very thought provoking.
Mmm. Not convinced that Frank’s wife is going to make the place any more ethical, tbh.
I see the new take in Hollywood movies is that to end the film as much ambiguous as possible so the viewers will be left with scratching their heads.
Seriously the whole mysterious build up was nice and all but I was really believing for a moment they would atleast give a conceivable finish.
Yeh hate endings like that it seems to be a popular thing now but a bunch of random scenes in the movie then have a ending that explains nothing I could literally write a 100 movies like this and be a poor man’s Chris Nolan
WHEN SHE WOKE UP WAS SHE STILL TIED TO THE BED THO???
went in knowing it was at least similar to The Stepford Wives based on the single trailer I watched months ago. Did not expect it to just be a straight modern + expositional adaptation.
Great video!
This movie was fantastic and it's honestly a shame it got overshadowed by all the behind-the-scenes drama😓
thank you for this video😫 i’ve been asking so many of these questions as well and am so happy to see someone explaining them
This analysis perfectly breaks down the movie, helped me understand, and better appreciate it! Now I want to watch it again! Thank you!
I don’t know man…. Seems like this was addressed in the opening credits of Weeds…. Didn’t need a full on movie when it was addressed over seasons of a series.
I also i understand that this was not the objective of the video u posted… but still
I've come back to this film so often, I personally loved it. It was a beautiful culmination of old (traditional), and new (AI and the simulation theory), in a very interesting way, I think Wilde did great.
Great analysis, I love you channel. Could you do one of the movie Hush on Netflix? I feel that is in an underrated horror movie with a fresh take on a classic theme. The ending always has me wondering, and no I know has watched or analyzed it!
decent movie but left too many things unexplained
It would honestly be amazing to have this technology. but it should never be forced, obviously. imagine having the perfect life whenever you want a break.
Incredible analysis once again! So glad you put these videos out!
Thank you so much, and I’m so glad you watch them! So happy to hear your enjoy, thank you for tuning in!!
Hey Lucas, I know it's a year late, but can you theorise what a sequel would look like and if it would be worth it?
In reality..... I need that record player console...with the records....of course...in reality.....lol...!
I don't get the ending tho. She just escaped by touching the window? Why didnt she escaped the first time she touched the window or the other lady who said she went? And it didn't give us what happened after. Movie was generally good tho
I just watched the movie and I just loved it and find it very genial...your review it's just bomb 🔥🔥🔥🔥you have described excately the all movie as it is. You literally understood the meaning behind every single scene 👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Don’t forget stepford wives is far superior to many plot holes in the movie but it was decent def had Truman show vibes to
I know I’m kinda late but what a great watch so many questions!?? How long was in there for ?
thankyou - I understand this movie so much better now. I wondered what was wrong with me that I couldnt work it out - thought I must really be thick not understand all the pieces you explained.
Has anyone thought about that red plane being the red laser over their eyes in real life???
truth is that people was happier when the roles was man and wife as should be and not as what is. say what you will.
You don’t think they’ll come after her and explore the new boss in a sequel ?
I loved this movie and this analysis
Thank you so much, I enjoyed the film as well!
Omg! Thank you! Due to a few of the scenes lol I don’t think I’ll watch the movie but I knew I wanted a review! And this breakdown was all I needed lol! Thank you!
I loved this movie. Olivia Wilde has a good taste as director.
Great explanation. Thanks!!
Exactly the analysis I was looking for!
So glad I could deliver! Thank you for watching!!
What is with the rumbling? I haven’t been able to figure that one out.
I want you to review my life and assign it themes 😭🤣🤪
Hahahaha direct a biopic and it’s a promise!
New here, really enjoyed your voice so calming
I never even realized that the whole place was a simulation lol... Thank you for explaining the entire movie because Olivia Wilde NEVER EXPLAINED ANY OF IT OR SET UP ANY FORESHAWING, ETC
I think the main allusion to it being a simulation is when someone says something like, "If he dies in here, his real body dies."
@@daisyelmwillow very true... but that info wasnt given until near the end of the movie lol... i guess that was part of the "twist", but in my humble opinion it just seem to come too late and too fast.... I still love the film though!!! Ive watched it 4 times already since it released on HBO lol. THE ASTHETIC!! 😍💗❤
Such a great analysis, thank you!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed!!
I really liked the ending, the movie was so artistic, it was a joy to watch it on a big screen.
But how does one live permanently in a simulation? Wouldn’t your body atrophy and die after being bed ridden for this long and who’s paying for all this if he doesn’t have a job? The round the clock nurses to change feeding tubes and catheters would be expensive…this premise makes little sense.
Loved your analysis. Thank you!

@@ElisiasEvolution hahaha very much so! It’s beyond belief
Although this is a great analysis, I still have many questions which are left unanswered. Alice's life in the real world now seems to be in shambles. How is she going to recover from this :
1. Her husband/boyfriend has died. In the real world, either she has to report the death or hide/dispose the body. As a real life surgeon, maybe she has the resources and gumption to dispose off the body. If she reports, she will be tried for murder, if she doesn't she will forever live in fear of getting caught.
2. Alice really loved Jack which is apparent throughout the movie. Her goal was to only escape the illusionary world not kill Jack. When she returns to the real world, the trauma of having killed Jack will hit hard. It's rather uncertain that she can continue a normal life after everything she has gone through even if she is acquitted in court.
In my opinion, even if Alice has escaped, her life has been ruined nevertheless.
I just watched it today !!
Subbed! Another great analysis
I really like your analysis of this film! The film isn't perfect and there are plotholes, but I think DWD is a bit Lynchian and the viewer has to actively look for layers of meaning. I feel like other reviewers didn't take into account that not everything is meant to be taken literally and some things in the film are symbolic.
this movie is nothing but clips of other movies spliced together very badly as all the ideas conflicted with each other and contradicted each other.
this isnt about obedient robotic wives, its about frank trying to make alice happy again cuz he thinks she is miserable. if frank was doing this for his wife with the best of intentions, why is there an evil bad guy super villain withe a super villain fortress seemingly bent on world domination? leave the simulation part out of it and that might have made sense.
why did the super villain's wife suddenly kill him with no explanation?
why wasnt margaret just unplugged? reset, rebooted and re inserted just like alice was? if they cant be rebooted back into the simulation, keep them out, end their contract.
cuz what really is sinister is that they are doing it against the will of the people who dont know they are in a simulation and that part was completely left out of the story. so why not mix that into the story that its voluntary and alice's mind just isnt compatible and cant accept it and keeps waking up out of it like a bad dream? cuz the other idea that anyone who might expose the crime needs to be killed doesnt make sense since frank has to work it butt off at a job he hates to pay for this simulation and there are not that many people in the simulation to think there is that much money to protect in such a high tech venture. to much contradictions were left in while to much of what would have made the movie make sense was left out. especially the non ending as if your dad shut the movie of with ten minutes to go cuz its late on a school nite and you never get to really witness the climax of the story nor the anti climax. maybe olivia wilde lost the last reel by accident even tho we all know they dont use film anymore.
this is the problem, the movie goes in too many directions at once. it doesnt even use one direction to distract you from the other like red herrings are supposed to do. it has the best of intentions mixed evenly together with the worst of intentions. might as well have been two different movies playing side by side.
it mixed the matrix with alice in wonderland, stepford wives, and mostly from the originator of that style, c s lewis, the hideous strength. big mysterious and all powerful corporation with just as mysterious big bad boss super villain that was kinda made into the movie the circle. it takes some from truman show as well as eternal sunshine. how about the cell? none of these ideas are original. get inside people's minds to fool them. if you want to go the deepest, this was first done in the 1930's fantasy movie where a young couple are forced to never see each other again but seem fine with that as we find out in the end they are together every nite sharing their dreams. they are both in the same dream. as if such in this movie, the same simulation stolen from the matrix. which stole it from multiplayer video games.
why am i ranting so much? cuz even tho i knew it was just yet another version of an old story, i just wanted to enjoy this version. hence, i didnt.
if i knew this was made by a woke toxic feminist i would never have bothered. they are always bad and always bomb.
sadly i went into it without knowing that.
I liked it but there is nothing new really, seen this story many times before. Not bad but also not very special, this movie lives and dies with the ending and the ending wasn't very satisfying.
loved this explanation!
Thank you so much!!
Thanks for the explanation which was helpful. Must add that if I knew that these were the themes of the film, I would not have watched it in the first place. Kudos for your work on this.
