  • Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu, also known as Ajaan Geoff (born 1949), is an American Buddhist monk. Belonging to the Thai Forest Tradition, for 22 years he studied under the forest master Ajahn Fuang Jotiko (himself a student of Ajaan Lee). Since 1993 he has served as abbot of the Metta Forest Monastery in San Diego County, California - the first monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition in the US - which he cofounded with Ajahn Suwat Suvaco.
    Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu is perhaps best known for his translations of the Dhammapada and the Sutta Pitaka - almost 1000 suttas in all - providing the majority of the sutta translations for the reference website Access to Insight, as well as for his translations from the dhamma talks of the Thai forest ajahns. He has also authored several dhamma-related works of his own, and has compiled study-guides of his Pali translations.

    Thanissaro's story about taking care of his guru during his final years and finding humor about those tough times is such a valuable lesson.

    Thank you for the talk on Consciousnesses by Ajahn Lee. ( The talk helped me to understand why Defilements enters the mind. It’s because of these other consciousnesses that live along side our own consciousness, drowning it out and taking over.).

      Bhante is actually how a monk addresses another monk in Thai Tradition but not a layman to a monk.. we call the monks 'Luang Por' or 'Luang Phu' or 'Luang Pi' (depends on age) in Thailand

    When people speak about "psychic powers " without evidence, this arises my suspicions . Psychic powers can be independently proven and if no one has been able to prove them so far it may well be as they do not exist. If someone speaks about psychic powers without evidence, either he knows something the thers do not, and then he should share, otherwise he may well be a liar or a gullible human being

    • @CultureExchangeBlog
      @CultureExchangeBlog  5 років тому +6

      It is my understanding that in most Buddhist sects, if you do gain mental powers, you are generally not allowed to admit it. So although there was a lot of speculation that Ajahn Lee was psychic, I don't believe he ever actually said that he was. Regardless, I don't personally believe in psychic powers.

    • @teomartini1105
      @teomartini1105 5 років тому +1

      It is Thankssaru Bhikku who made the claim. Either is able to beef it up and prove it, otherwise people may start to think he is a crook.

    • @CultureExchangeBlog
      @CultureExchangeBlog  5 років тому +5

      Sure, I understand your position, but he was talking about Ajahn Lee, who passed on quite some time ago. It wouldn't be possible to prove the abilities of a dead man.

    • @teomartini1105
      @teomartini1105 5 років тому +1

      I am not so sure you understand my position, Ajahn lee still lived in an age of cameras and scientists. Prove his abilities would have been easy hundreds of years ago, let alone 50 years ago. If nobody wanted to try that, to prove anything, well there may be a reason why . Then please believe what you like..

    • @CultureExchangeBlog
      @CultureExchangeBlog  5 років тому +3

      As I mentioned before, Ajahn Lee never actually said he was psychic. Many people believed he was, but it was purely speculation. Thanissaro's comments about Ajahn Lee's abilities are his personal beliefs and opinions. If you have a specific question, I can try my best to answer, but I am not sure exactly what information you're looking for. Regardless, thanks for your comments.
