Hi Chris, would be great if you could do a video on how you prep a deck to restain/repaint in same color and/or changing the color

I am triple liking it for that last tip! Because that's the first time someone mentioned they could start a fire. How long do you recommend letting it sit before wiping it up?

Hi, do you have a recommended product for use on the overhead cedar soffit on our porch? It is protected from the weather. We want to leave it the natural look. Someone recommended Cabot Wood Toned stain & sealer but I'm not sure. We use Penofin on our deck and fence which we like but have to clean and reapply every now and then. thanks

Repainting my deck, is there a particular kind of paint you recommend? Not staining/sealing for now just painting to protect wood from upcoming cold weather

Hello, any idea how to get deck stain off of limestone? I forgot to cover one section, limestone is under deck and now it has drips all over it. Thanks much!

just throwing this question out there does anyone remember the stain applicator (last i used on was around 1978) yup I'm old but it was for shakes and it held about a gallon of product kind of a square tub with a roller built in where you would roll your applicator on it to take on some stain as needed.
the hand held applicator was probably 6 inch wide?
funny thing is I've been painting since around 77 and have always sprayed but this place coming up has way too much trim and glass to mask so if anyone knows where to find something or knows of this please advise thanks

Usually by the time you run one of them bender bars down between a few planks the wood will tear the hell out of it..they are good for in between nice smooth wood that’s been painted a few times though..

Hi, thank you so much for your videos. I have learned so much!. My question is what is the best stain to use for my deck that won't cause unnecessary work when time comes to re-stain it years later? I was going to use Behr Stain but then saw a video that said a stain like that required quite a bit more work when re-staining time comes along. What do you suggest? thx

If I use a water based stain on a deck will I still have to use rags to wipe off the excess?

Great video! Just out of curiosity, how did you like the Olympic elite product that was used in the video compared to the other oil based deck stains?

I like to use old paint cans filled with water to put my stain rags into. This way I can close the container, it's a metal container, and the old cans get reused.

How long after first coat before wiping excess oil based stains? How many hours between coats? And how many rain free days after applying do you realistically need to plan for? I live in Michigan and getting 3 consecutive days without rain outside of July and August

Do you ever end up sanding the decks, either with a belt sander or the large "floor waxer" style circular sanders?

    4:41 is the real deal
Bender Bar is an absolute must seriously, when you agree to paint for a customer don’t just “paint” it do it properly!
And if you don’t have one of these or something similar you’re the HACK !

Does the 'bender bar' get snagged and tear like a foam brush does?

just use a normal brush to cut in between the deck boards. i have stained and paint several decks in my career. and usually the deck boards have enough of a gap to jam paint into. and just clean up any imperfections with a more dry brush to get a smother finish. but these sponges. or “bender bar” they really dont hold a lot of paint on them. a normal paint brush you can load it up and it will take you a longer way per dip and take less time.

Some people are just cut out to do certain parts of painting, others don't have the patience and work ethic for all of the different types of painting. In painting trade school I had a friend who was very fast, but when we painted windows, he went on the glass all over. I was a little slow, but very meticulous and patient. In a few years I got very efficient, but also kept the meticulous work ethic. It's been paying my bills well for 26 years now :) For gaps that Chris talks about in the video I like to use a small hand held air assisted sprayer. I found it quite fast with good results. I guess we all play around to find a better, faster way to keep quality, but reduce labor time.

A good friend of mine got fined over a million dollars because the staining he was doing. Started a fire from. Internal Combustion of Stain rags left to dry in the sun. Damn near lost his business. Always in buckets or water. And disposed of properly.

Ok seems like when you turn it around to do the other side that the plastic side hits the other edge and start taking the stain off. Seems like a gimmick to me and I don't think a real professional is going to use that tool. I will get in between a lot faster with a 2in brush or a sprayer like I always do. I use a 211 tip when spraying the deck itself and cut and roll the spindles using a 4 inch hot dog roller.
