- It's been six months since I have left Wollongong, Australia. Where I attended University at Wollongong (UOW) for a five month study abroad program. I have had lots of time to reflect on what I learned, and what I wish I knew before going halfway across the world alone. Anything from planning your trip, to traveling to the country, getting plugged in to community, and more!

Regarding cultural differences, you might be interested in the SBS Cultural Atlas, it covers Australians as well as all of other migrant populations that live here (even Americans!)

Hi Laura! I am going to study abroad at UoW for the full year this July from the UK and I just wanted to say thank you for all your videos and advice about Wollongong, and I will be living in Kooloobong B73 too :D I just wanted to ask if you met anyone from the UK out there and what the stereotypes of people from the UK you might have experienced?
Be prepared for the cold westerly winds we have in the Illawarra (Wollongong) area in the winter. As the Gong (Wollongong) is on a small flat area between the sea and mountains to the west the sun sets early in winter because of the mountain shadows. Mount Keira has an elevation of 464 metres (1,522ft).
Have a UK bloke that set himself up in the Gong. His feed called "Chasing Dain". May give you some ideas @elliece

Oh I hope you have a wonderful time!! Actually yes, I met quite a few people from the UK. The shuttle I took from Sydney airport when I first arrived had like 10 people from the UK who had all travelled together. I didn’t keep in that much contact after that, but they were nice! I think people tend to like you guys, definitely more than Americans haha!
Personal safety here is nothing like the concern it is in many parts of the US, even in the cities. There are very few places I wouldn’t walk through alone, even at night. If you’re a woman I’d be a little more cautious when alone, but stick with common sense and you’ll be fine. Most of us are just trying to help you when we realise you’re visiting! Public transport is quite safe here too. The first area at the airport you go through is immigration. Then you go through customs and quarantine. Quarantine in Australia is the hardest - don’t be bringing perishable food in, or untreated wood items, or dirty hiking boots!
You can use your debit credit card for travel too. If you have paywave on your card you can pay for anything anywhere with just tap and go on your bank card. You wont need cash generally to buy or get around. 😎
