Only issue I see with TrueNAS is that it doesn't allow you to do a mix of drives of different sizes very well, like Synology does. I believe that Unraid has sorted this out, though.

Relax lol yeah title is a little bit clickbait, but the video was great. NAS are great pieces of equipment, whether used for entertainment or for storing work, even if they're not cost-effective to replace streaming without piracy. This video was super informative, regardless. Good tips and a great idea to make it not an ugly box sitting somewhere, and to help keep it cool and quiet if its going to get heavy use.

If that estimate is right, this pays for itself in 3 and a half years, without factoring the rest of the hardware. Plus normies don't need $5k in hdds, so the cost and time to recoup is even lower.

I love this build, but I do have to say that saying it's a 'replacement for netflix' isn't really true. You still have to obtain media somehow. The legal way to do that would be purchasing, but if you buy 1 bluray movie a month, you're at the cost of Netflix. If you're willing to sail the high seas, that's a different argument, but I don't think anyone's going to publicly endorse that (even if I do it all the time). And to do THAT reliably, you need to pay for a VPN or else you're gonna get dinged by your ISP pretty quickly.
While I have a home server with a similar setup with 100's of movies, it's certainly not for everyone or even most people.

    • @johnatkinson1111
      @johnatkinson1111 3 дні тому +3

To be fair you can also buy pre owned movies. Sure you won’t get the newest movies or even the newest blu ray releases but you can build a solid movie library. I got a copy of Deadpool for $3 from a local charity shop. It does mean you have to look around a bit more but used can be very good at building up a solid collection and if every so often you end up really wanting to see a recently released movie then buying new can still have to ahead.
Also movies are a bigger weak point of this setup but TV shows are where the real value can be. Complete collections new depending on the show(ie what they price it at) can be cheaper than streaming assuming you don’t binge the whole show and instead pace yourself. I’ll sometimes find complete collections of 100-250 episodes for $35-$50.

you went to the trouble of building your own case and you didn't have the foresight to make it a hotswap case. Hotswap cages usually drastically cut down on cable management. Instead of 2 cables per drive of routing, depending on the backplane used, it could be 2 cables for 4 drives (in the case of mini-SAS HD cables) or more with oculink. You could still 3d print the cages since backplanes are a separate BOM item. Just design a cage and caddy setup for the backplane. Make a hinge on the front fan bracket so that the fan swings out of the way when you need to work on a drive so you can slide it out of the case.
Also, TrueNAS Scale 24.10 and above is far from difficult and "scary". Old versions of SCALE were because they used Kubernetes whereas SCALE 24.10 uses Docker and Docker Compose instead of Kubernetes. You can literally paste in a Docker Compose file to stand up services.

Hey - when you're printing something with a bunch of IO ports in a cluster (like a mobo), just print a hole where the cluster should be with a reasonable margin, then add a press-fit IO shield for the port cluster. It doesn't have to be as ugly as the traditional PC IO shield, you can make a nice bezel or whathaveyou. That way if you mess it up, or change out the board, you only have to print a new shield.

19:10 I do not reccomend a UPS like this for a server, the lead acid batteries often do not give warning about their depleted capacity and generally only tell you when they've completely failed
I've had units like this go from 20 minute runtime to 30 second run time in as little as 2 years with the same hardware attached.
Source, we have about a hundred of this style of UPS deployed under people's desks and we're constantly replacing batteries.
Now i dont know about units this small, but for my home server rack i actually went with one of those "solar generators" (i hate this term, its a battery with a solar MPTT) You also have to be careful with these as many of them lack UPS features like proper failover time, and the ability to turn back on when the grid comes back if the battery is completely depleted
I have my rack running a growatt 2000wh battery pack, my rack only uses ~340w/h and during the day is 100% solar powered after... it depends, in the summer its solar after 8:30 in the winter its no solar until probably 10AM

I plan on just getting a Jonsbo N3 case & a Erying ITX motherboard with a 12500H. I can use a M.2 to 6x SATA3 ports stick (so I'll have 8 total) that'll allow me to have a Home Server with two network ports (one for my main rig 2.5Gb & a 1Gb for the living room). I already got two 12TB refurbished Enterprise Grade (data center) HDDs, and I can get more for $85-90 each when needed. Besides with my "backups" I've got enough shows & movies to rival my old Blockbuster Video, and that only required 24TB (I just need 24TB more to backup with). If I want to go 4K everything then I'll need to use all 8 bays. Frankly I can just leave the server running in the Kitchen with the noisy fridge if noise is a issue. So for $820 which includes 2 12tb drives, a 1TB M.2 for the OS, a 400W SFX PSU, and the M.2 to 6x SATA ports is a better option. I could go cheaper with a NAS N100 board that has 5 NICs and 8 SATA ports, or a NAS board that has 8 SATA ports with a lga 1700 socket (then buy a cheap used I5/I3 T class CPU).

You *should* be okay with piracy, period, and you don't need to go this crazy with building the system and setting it up if you don't want to or can't afford to. There are MUCH cheaper ways, like putting an immutable (for less maintenance) Linux distro on a regular PC with a smaller form-factor and hooking up whatever amount of storage you want, either as independent drives or in RAID, and setting up Jellyfin. The problem with these "easy to use" services is that the ease of use is the trap to get you to pay less and less reasonable amounts of money every month for a service that's no better than cable except in having the ability to play what you want when you want...assuming they haven't told you you're not allowed to watch it anymore, which they have no right to do. A little bit of DIY is objectively the better option for ownership and preservation, and in the long-term for your budget.

There's a point in this I have to call you on, the power off with Hard-drives depends very much on the type of hard drive, your using Mechanical drives, loosing power while writing on a mechanical drive will only result in a loss of data and or the possibility of a corrupted file. The removal of power is designed into mechanical drives, they will either slow with the heads in place resulting in no physical damage, or the heads will lift as they are held in place by an electro magnet and again no physical damage. Most 'damage' to a mechanical hard drive comes from being banged around, moved etc while its writing causing the heads to slip and potentially damage the platter.
Having a UPS on storage however is just common sense, hell it should be on most PC's it gives time for Cache to finish writing to the storage and prevent the loss of data.
A SSD however is a different matter, they can suffer from sudden power disruptions, though more modern ones take it into account.

Depending on the controller used on that sata card you used, you might end up having sata disconnects. Some controllers just are not dependable enough for ZFS and it will briefly disconnect. In terns of the cheap stuff I have had decent success with the ASmedia chipsets but most of the others have issues. To solve this get a real SAS controller. LSI SAS2008 or 3008 based cards are perfect. At this point I would probably grab a 3008 based card. Then you attach the drives via a SAS fan out cable. depending on if you get a 2008 or a 3008 card will depend what type of SAS port you have so your SAS fan out cables need to have the right connection at the card end. They have four SAS connectors at the other end these connectors are identical to SATA connectors and just plug straight into your SATA disks.
You get both the cards and the fan out cables off of ebay. They are pretty cheap because they are really old now. When you buy the fan out cables buy extra, they tend to just die randomly. When you get the card see if the seller can flash it to 'IT mode' for you. It's much better for ZFS if the card is in 'IT mode' rather than the standard 'IR mode'. It can be a significant hassle to flash them.

Last time I checked (quite recently) SATA controller boards like that one generally use cheap controllers which don't work reliably and are not supported by TrueNAS.
If you wish to continue to use the SATA controller board, expect to loose your data at some point. Hope that helps!

Just gotta remember a HDD has an average lifespan of 3-5 years, so put that in your budget.
If you have a proper NAS and you're not super unlucky they shouldn't all die at once, but without a RAID option you cannot be sure your data won't disappear.

    • @fffmpeg
      @fffmpeg 3 дні тому

it is raid tho. i think you meant "raid is not a backup"

    • @Qvintus-uwu

@@fffmpeg For people this is aimed at, who doesn't want to pay for 3rd party backups. RAID is your best bet at a backup system.
Just figured it was important to note that if you're putting everything locally you need to have the HDD lifespan in mind. Because that is also a cost in the long term.
It is not a perfect system yes, but it's significantly better than having just 3-5 HDDs setup without a RAID option.

Nah good hard drives can survive so much longer then 3-5 years, "enterprise" (consumer price) Toshiba's can easily get to a 10 year lifespan, they have 5 year warranty so they will definitely surpass that. You also aren't running all your hard drives 24/7 on load

Everyone complaining about hard drive costs is missing the point. You could achieve 95% of the functionality outlined in this video with a used laptop and a single drive. The server can be as cheap or as expensive as you choose. Zac chose very expensive because that's what he wanted. You can choose differently and still get most of the functionality. Also this server isn't just replacing Netflix, it can replace most cloud services and home automation.

My media server is an 8th gen Pentium based machine that owes me a total of about $50. Just a single 4tb HDD in it for the time being being even spending a couple hundred $ on some 14tb hdds, Netflix would eclipse that in less than 2 years.

To be honest, your 30TB Synology would be more than enough for me. Now I use a 2TB Google Drive plan and even though I work a lot with photos and music production, I'm still only halfway through filling it completely, and this includes the data on Gmail and Google Photos, too. I was looking at this video to be inspired to do things from scratch, but Synology seems a more sane solution for my use case. Besides, apparently I can add more space to it later with another expansion unit.

I think if you split the drives into two 3-high towers that are next to each other you could've fit them into the gap above the mainboard and thus make the whole package even smaller :D
Better yet, you couldve used a 12V powerbrick, or if you want it internal, a used server PSU with platinum / titanium efficiency can be had for cheap and power the mainboard itself with a pico psu

You should ground the mounting points of the motherboard to the power supply chassis to potentially save components in case of a catastrophic electrical short or power surge. Those grounding points on the motherboard are there for a reason and not being utilized in this build. 😬

Whats the power draw of the completed unit doing normal tasks and at idle? I turned an old gaming machine (i7 4770K, no GPU) into a makeshift server but even at idle that thing was costing me a lot just to have turned on. Though I would love to build something like this instead cause I am getting kinda fed up with all the subscriptions. Time to do some calculations!

If you're worried about dust, run it in positive pressure, fans sucking more air in than can escape, forces the dust out instead of it settling in a calm spot. Is slightly worse for temperature but i never noticed a difference on my NAS other than not having to clean it for best part of a decade after cleaning it every 6 months.
Then for backup, consider aws s3 or another cloud object store, you can set up versioning, retention times etc. it sucks if you have hundreds of small files (less than 100kb) but for larger files the cost is minimal, probably less than the electricity for the NAS in most cases.

Btw, carbon fiber combined with aluminum is known as galvaniic corrosion. Which in the long term has a small reactive charge that will slowly corrode away at the aluminum. Also note that carbon fiber is also conductive to some degree and rf blocking. It wouldnt be my first choice to use with electronic housings.

I'd be wary of temps in this NAS build as each HDD needs strong direct air during a full parity check/RAID rebuild. The 200mm fan in this build won't deliver enough cooling for the left-most and right-most drives; a square of 4x 120mm or 4x 140mm is a much better configuration. Combined with a motherboard with a temp sensor header (many ASUS boards), you can connect the top two fans to one fan header and in BIOS assign it to respond to the temp sensor you've taped to the hottest drive. The HDD fans will now ramp dynamically to cool the drives under heavy load, and the bottom two can spin slower to cool the system as needed. Also as the HDD's are the heaviest component, this case is top-heavy; so suggest they should be at the bottom.
In everyday use, this build's airflow will seem fine, but (♥your content and channel Zac 😛) you'll notice he didn't cover temps while building the array in the video, which is the biggest test of a NAS enclosure. Ex: a typical Unraid parity check with an array filled with 10TB drives takes about 18 hours for me, and 24TB will be ~2 days, and each of those drives must have very good direct cooling which responds to rising HDD temps. Overall loved the video and hope to see revision 2!

I really like the idea of the server, however there are some things here that I believe could have been optimized further and potentially cost less:
    - Ryzen SOCs consume more at idle that Intel. An old i5 8500 is extremely efficient and also has quicksync for transcoding (not sure how it does at 4k though). 7945HX tops out at 127w and sits at 8.3w idle. My 8500 sits at about 5w idle after powertop. Servers like these spend most of their time at idle.
    - Just because the PSU is 80+ Gold does not make it efficient at the wattages that server is going to mostly be operating in, which is idle. Calculate your average idle consumption numbers and choose a PSU from Wolfgang's list that performs well in that range and fits your dimension requirements. In your case, 60-80w with the parts you've chosen.
    - You can't compare your total storage cost to that of B2, as on B2 you'd only have a backup of critical/essential files you need to be offsite. You did address the offsite backup, but my point of the comparison not being fair still stands. Not to mention you did not even account for energy cost for your server. Granted, even with those variables (only essential data & energy costs) you are likely to come out ahead, but your comparison is flawed. Also, B2 is mostly used as a backup when homelabbing, not as the primary storage solution.
    - You used software that is in early access beta. Rookie mistake to deploy beta software on what is essentially a production scenario in this case (home server with media and essential data). You want the most stable OS you can get for your case. This is a big one.
    - No hotswap for the drives. That's likely to be an issue down the road.
    - Front panel glue. Seriously, we are taking dumps from up high on electronics companies that use glue and case manufacturers that use rivets instead of screws. We know better at this point.
Everything else, especially the 3D printing and the sound/vibration dampening aspects I really liked and you gave me some nice ideas for if/when I expand my homelab. Right now I am not running storage, only some (micro)services.

I admire the hard work and dedication that went into this (as always) but I'm not convinced. Unless you're also using piracy, you're missing out on a lot of content, and the insane cost of it (from building the NAS to buying the content) negates any savings you might make. Especially since technology like that isn't something that retains its value or usefulness in the long run. By the time you start saving money, it'll be time to replace the whole thing. The only benefit I see is more privacy but there are NAS already offering that for a fraction of the cost. Let's face it, it's a cool project for tech addicts, but not so much for saving money.

Zach, you honestly could have gotten refurbished drives from a trusted seller with a good warranty, usually those last just as long, and actually might be better since buying new means they probably come from the same batch, and if one from a batch fails usually the rest will follow shortly after. The vast majority of servers use air cooling, as it is simple and safer. Lots of airflow is offloaded to the rack.
