    Thames TV always did interesting, relatable documentaries back in the 70s with earthy presenters like Benny Green. 👍🏻📺🤗

    Don't you love the educated middle class looking down their noses at the working class...these folks where a community that had each other and loved the fact they knew they could depend on their neighbors...they went through two world wars that saw them bombed by the Germans (from zeppelin's in WW1 and airplanes in WW2)after which the London council refused the rebuild or spend money on the area to force the cockneys out so big money could buy up the land for pennies!!!.❤️🙏🇬🇧

    • @chrismanners9091
      @chrismanners9091 2 місяці тому +4

      The boroughs and the GLC built loads of working class housing after the war for Cockneys, some excellent, some not so good. Lots of people nonetheless preferred to move out to Essex and Hertfordshire for a new life, and very few came back, so the communities can't have been that great. The only houses that were handed over to richer people were the old grand houses like the ones in the film in Spitalfields, which were now regarded as having architectural merit and were too expensive to fix up. Those people did pretty well, but I expect they've changed hands lots of times since the seventies when this sort of gentrification started.

      Still happens. But what you'll find is that the vast majority of them are educated beyond their means; as in there's no natural Instinct or common sense with these toffs.
      They merely trot out the same pseudo intellectual bollocks they always have done, all quotation but no context or even relevance.

    While I did find this a fascinating five minutes of film, "Cleanliness is next to godliness" is not a Biblical reference.
    It may have been first said by English cleric John Wesley in the late 1700's, if what I've heard elsewhere is correct.

    • @mushy3424
      @mushy3424 2 місяці тому +3

      Benny Green specifically made the point that it wasn't from the bible. He credited it to Mrs Beaton

      @mushy3424 (3:38) The "peculiar Biblical quotation."
      Mrs Beaton, and Mr. Green, if you're reading this, it's not a Biblical quotation.
      Just remember that next time it's brought up at church, or pub trivia night, or when you're down at the public wash house, and somebody says,
      "Cleanliness is next to.."
      You tell them,

    It's true that alot of the 'navvies' who built our railways were Irish, and quite alot did come over as a result of the potato famine in the mid 19th century. But alot more went to America to seek a new life.....many more than came over to.Londin and the rest of England.
    As for all the Jewish people he talks about coming over, that's not so true. London, and England for that matter never did have a large Jewish population - because most lived in mainland Europe to start with. Cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, and many German cities (up to the late 1930's) had larger Jewish populations than London. In the case if Paris, and Amsterdam, this is still true today. Take Ajax, for example - the great dutch football club. They were founded by Jewish people.
    And as with the Irish, many of them went to America to start a new life, rather than come over to the UK, and London. Some did, but most did not, they fled Europe altogether - never to return.
    So this documentary is correct in parts, but it does also twist the truth somewhat aswell.
