Thames TV always did interesting, relatable documentaries back in the 70s with earthy presenters like Benny Green. 👍🏻📺🤗
Indeed!
Wonderfully shot, recorded and presented
I agree.. 🇬🇧
Well, when he wasn't made to fight his way through countless ordinary members of the public whilst talking to camera, yeah I guess it was...
grown up watching Thames TV during the 1980s.
I reminisce about those days!
Benny Green: the nearest thing to a real-life Harold Steptoe, with added jazz and cricket.
Great video! I remember my Gran having a Toilet out the back in her Forest Gate house! Couldn't imagine that now
Me too and l knew how cold it was to sit on it , then l pulled the chain !
@@deborahheath375 especially in the winter 😅
Yes we also had a loo in the garden bloody cold in the winter
We take so much for granted
Today
@@davidmathews4524 Definitely!
We miss Thames TV.
Cleanliness is being close to God. Love it.
I'll take all the Benny Green you have please.
He was a very perceptive writer on jazz too, as per his sleeve notes for various albums.
Me too.
@@NicJones-ss9bg And good on cricket too.
@@chrismanners9091 That's true.
Don't you love the educated middle class looking down their noses at the working class...these folks where a community that had each other and loved the fact they knew they could depend on their neighbors...they went through two world wars that saw them bombed by the Germans (from zeppelin's in WW1 and airplanes in WW2)after which the London council refused the rebuild or spend money on the area to force the cockneys out so big money could buy up the land for pennies!!!.❤️🙏🇬🇧
The boroughs and the GLC built loads of working class housing after the war for Cockneys, some excellent, some not so good. Lots of people nonetheless preferred to move out to Essex and Hertfordshire for a new life, and very few came back, so the communities can't have been that great. The only houses that were handed over to richer people were the old grand houses like the ones in the film in Spitalfields, which were now regarded as having architectural merit and were too expensive to fix up. Those people did pretty well, but I expect they've changed hands lots of times since the seventies when this sort of gentrification started.
Still happens. But what you'll find is that the vast majority of them are educated beyond their means; as in there's no natural Instinct or common sense with these toffs.
They merely trot out the same pseudo intellectual bollocks they always have done, all quotation but no context or even relevance.
Keep up there good work on here am a big support of u do a rally good job on here I hop we can be friends
While I did find this a fascinating five minutes of film, "Cleanliness is next to godliness" is not a Biblical reference.
It may have been first said by English cleric John Wesley in the late 1700's, if what I've heard elsewhere is correct.
Benny Green specifically made the point that it wasn't from the bible. He credited it to Mrs Beaton
@mushy3424 (3:38) The "peculiar Biblical quotation."
Mrs Beaton, and Mr. Green, if you're reading this, it's not a Biblical quotation.
Just remember that next time it's brought up at church, or pub trivia night, or when you're down at the public wash house, and somebody says,
"Cleanliness is next to.."
You tell them,
"Well I read on this UA-cam channel once.."
They didn't know about germ theory but staying clean or sanitary did reduce the probability of getting certain diseases
No knife crime in sight
none of them.
Seriously? London's murder rate in 1990 was about twice what it is now. Lots of those would have been stabbings.
Rose tinted glasses
How much better London is today. People don't understand how fortunate they are
with immigrants i think not.
@@Cliff589id rather be poor and Brit than poor and replaced!
@@jermainefun_420 you are right.
@@Cliff589 Thats pretty sad. You would rather live in absolute appalling poverty, so long as you dont have to look at a brown person? Get a grip, man
We have all the nice creature comforts, but a lack of understanding!
This is about victorian poverty? Not 1970’s east end poverty like I was expecting?!
How polite and civil people were back then. No screeching drunk girls like we get every night in every town now.
@@crabapples1995 it is because they are supposed to become Mothers. That's why we have so many ferals.
@@crabapples1995immigrants
Every night?! Maybe not so many girls, but loads of very drunk people even in small towns at this time. The media called them "lager louts".
@@crabapples1995Tower hamlets is fine, nothing wrong with it.
Funny how they didn't run into anyone on a night out while filming in the daytime, isn't it?
Was east London ever not poor lol even on call the midwife things were looking rough

Ok
When the UK had more of a soul. Now it has become Americanised!!
1975!what a fantastic memory that that is!what I wouldn't give to be in poverty in 1975 than rich in the emptiness of tomorrow.the last nigh on forty years!now that it's happened!what was the point of all that?
Yes there was!
The Irish and the Jews are no fools...strange how they were the butt of so many jokes back in the Jurassic 🙄😂
Not really surprising when you have a nation that has groomed generations of native white English bigots. Natives, who even today wear their bigotry on their sleeves. Need proof? Ask yourself who were the biggest supporters of Brexit.
Yeah that idea to have him walk through the crowd and talk to camera really didn't work well did it?
Im Irish and was born in 1975,lol🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
So
@leepaterson3462 ever heard of sarcasm?
So
Does that make you special
@@jaws848
Not when it's not even sarcastic
The IRA were bombing londoners then ...
@stevenlawson866 lighten up and stop being triggred....you will live longer
"the irish Joe" & "the russian Joe"? wtf is he talking about?
That accent has now sadly disappeared
Yeah its now urdu
No it hasn't.
So what. Everything evolves.
Lol
It's true that alot of the 'navvies' who built our railways were Irish, and quite alot did come over as a result of the potato famine in the mid 19th century. But alot more went to America to seek a new life.....many more than came over to.Londin and the rest of England.
As for all the Jewish people he talks about coming over, that's not so true. London, and England for that matter never did have a large Jewish population - because most lived in mainland Europe to start with. Cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, and many German cities (up to the late 1930's) had larger Jewish populations than London. In the case if Paris, and Amsterdam, this is still true today. Take Ajax, for example - the great dutch football club. They were founded by Jewish people.
And as with the Irish, many of them went to America to start a new life, rather than come over to the UK, and London. Some did, but most did not, they fled Europe altogether - never to return.
So this documentary is correct in parts, but it does also twist the truth somewhat aswell.
the clip is about the east end of London though ; specifically - so its correct
"The Great Replacement isn't real but it is happening and it's a good thing."
says who
You people are utterly obsessed. You must not have any real problems in life
White people
Cleanliness is next to godliness ,only in an Irish dictionary!😂
I'm glad that they don't put this kind of geezer on the air any more. All pub stereotype jokes and wayward opinions. Decent archive footage all the same
What? Benny Green was a superb presenter.
Get a life!
Where are the wayward opinions and bad jokes?
of its time pal - bit like the other Benny (Hill) - you can't use revisionist history on stuff that was normal back then
I guess you either love it or you hate it. Benny Green was absolutely genuine though, and wrote about music and sport as well.
