I just got a new in box Williams Western Maryland GP9. It looks wonderful and pulls strong, but I’m already looking to upgrade the sound. This is exactly what I need. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching! I’d honestly recommend upgrading to an ERR soundboard for the locomotive if you intend to run it in conventional mode. If you have a DCS system , I’d recommend upgrading it to PS3. I have a few Williams pieces that run amazingly well with the PS3 upgrade kits installed.
@@NixCrossing I’ll keep that in mind! I’m just getting back into the hobby (we chatted in comments using my other channel about how good the RailSounds tender was) and I’m trying to decide what I want to do with my layout. It’s probably going to be a mix of conventional and early TMCC, and maybe some new stuff - if I get the budget lol.
@NixCrossing no worries. I am not in a hurry, I am retired. I enjoy watching your videos especially the live streams. I mainly run Postwar lionel with some modern and a few DCS engines as well. I have some premier engines with fried boards that I put William's reverse units in the and they run great but was looking to add some sound back to them. I enjoyed your PS3 updates but don't think I would attempt it now after having many strokes. Keep up the good work Nick.
Thank you so much! I’ll try that and of course check out your video on that before I catch my engine on fire 😂. I’m guessing they are wired in parallel?
@@NixCrossing Williams are wired in parallel and that's what makes them fast. Several modelers do it. I really want those E7s, best looking that Williams makes.
@@joeystrains.9316 First thing I’m doing when I get home is re wiring those motors lol thanks so much! Williams makes some really cool stuff. I have a scale Hudson from them that isn’t ran much on the channel 🙈
I've bought quite a few of those boards from him. He's one of the best sellers out here and answers your questions and helps you. Steam or diesels. Great stuff. You'll love them.
@@thoff1348 thabk you so much! Unfortunately ERR has stopped making the AC motor kits. But that would be a great idea for a future project once they start making them available
Not a problem, thanks for watching! This kit was approx $100. I also recently re wired the motors in series so it draws more power and the RPM sounds kick in. Williams motors are wired in parallel.
That sounds fantastic! Nice job doing the tutorial including the parts where you had issues and how you resolved them. Looking forward to seeing the next part with the smoke unit.
Thanks for watching! The seller most likely changed their name on eBay, but this product can be searched by typing in “Lionel Railsounds” on eBay. The picture is a white background and blue writing logo. I have also seen Railsounds with TMCC board kits for sale for around 200 on eBay. I hope this helps
Great sound system. I've been looking at this same kit for my PW F units. I've used his Santa Fe Warhorse steam kit in the MPC 8206 streamlined tender that had a bad SOS board. Thanks for sharing. I haven't seen a lot of videos with his kits installed. He also has a couple Vanderbilt steam kits
Thanks so much for watching! I’ve been looking at a few of those boards as well for my LTI Chessie special or my B&O Hudson from Williams. They all sound great 🚂💨
Have you tried by chance to use a BCR instead of a battery? Always worry about a battery leaking and we all know the PS1 and PS2 issues, not saying that will happen here but if you have them laying around will they work to keep power continuous?
@@charlie-mm7cv I have BCRs installed in all of my PS2 locomotives 3 and 5 volt variations. BCRs still require about 15 seconds of start up time to charge (capacitors) while running in conventional. BCRs charge much faster while using a DCS system with approximately 18VAC to the track. Hopefully this helps
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately the seller is no longer available but you can still find these through Electric Railroads website (ERR). Also I would search “Railsounds” on eBay. I was later told that these were boards thrown out by Lionel and were purchased in bulk
Nick, sounds great! I have a pair of MTH E8s that could use an upgrade like this, beautiful units with streamlined passenger cars but they only have a cheesy sounding horn. I bought a Williams SD90 a while ago and remember reading an article online explaining how to wire the 2 motors in series to slow it down and make for a better runner. I did and it did make for a better performer (you can see the headlight better anyway) Wonder if that would help your sound board to be more in sync?
Thanks so much for watching! I actually did wire them in series and they do line up much better now. I actually might install a TMCC board in the lead unit after finding one on eBay
Great tutorial Nick! And entertaining as well! A question, if variable power is what's needed to alter the rev sounds on the board is it possible or advisable to take AC power directly from the track? If it is varying the track power should vary the rev sounds. Apples and oranges of course, but the Williams boards operate off AC and so do ERR's.

Thanks for video you made the install look easy. Sounds are great and a nice engine.
Thanks so much for watching! They are pretty simple I promise
Very informative video Nix! I tried to find the seller on eBay paper booth but had no luck. Thanks, Glenn
Hey thanks for watching! So unfortunately the seller went “poof” of the eBay. There’s a few other sellers on there

Nick. Can you adjust volume level ?
Yes, there’s a pot on the board itself. You can add a pot to the frame if you disconnect the one on the circuit board and solder in an aux one
Nice, Nick.
Thanks so much!
If you wire up the motors in series it slows locomotive down and allows the sound to match speed. I did it on one of my videos.

Thanks for the video, very helpful. Can you do a video with a Lionel older engine with pullmore motors w/ an E unit to Railsound 2.5?

Poker tool. Up north we call that a pick.
Haha 😂 yes indeed! A very very sharp one
Do rail sounds fit in a mid century steam loco tender?
The new boards from ERR will, the old boards are too large
Nicely done my friend! Great video
Thanks so much!
Thanks for the video I've been debating whether to upgrade all my Williams diesels. Now I know I have to order some kits and have fun.

Great job Nick! Glad you were able to diagnose the reed switch problem.
Thanks so much! I’m going to experiment more tonight 🔥🔥🔥
It sounds great. Cool videos. Nicely done.

Looks and sounds great.
Thanks so much! Still jealous of your Williams 44 Toner. That’s a great sounding unit and can’t seem to find them lol
With the sky high prices, this is a great opportunity for Williams to make a comeback.
Very true! I know they have their “sound blast” system now. Thanks so much for watching!
What it the address for paperbooth for the railsounds products?
So unfortunately he is no longer under that eBay store name. There are still kits on eBay though

Can Lionchief 2 be installed in Willian’s FUnit?
@@DennisPatton-hs2po I’m not too sure if that would work. I’d recommend ERR or an MTH PS3 upgrade kit.
awesome job Nick, hopefully I will get up the courage to try this sometime
Thanks so much for watching! I promise it’s very easy. The wires run off full AC / track power.
Where did u get kit from I have lionel i want to do

Thanks so much for watching! I’m going to try to get the magnetic switch to work tonight
How did that take you to install it in the william locomotive
It would have taken me about 10 minutes. You use the wires that would have gone to the sound blast system. This just uses track power
