Most of the time coma's are like a long deep sleep but there are cases of people being in coma's and being able to hear smell and even see a little bit of what's around them but being unable to show any signs to the people around them that this is the case that's probably why in movies when someone's in a coma and an other Character gives a speech usually starting with "I don't know if you can hear me or not"
