Spectacular. I just bought a zhongruan on a recent trip to Hong Kong. So, I'm looking for all information, music and videos of the instrument. This is a really unbelievable performance.
No kidding, wow! The way the eastern and western instruments work together along with an AMAZING solo...bits have the energy of Hendrix, don't they?? But even more texture and emotion over the whole. Again, wow...fantastic, thank you so much for posting this.
This is outstanding. So interesting for me as a heavy metal guitarist, lots of pentatonic runs and power chords going on but obviously a very different setting! Can anyone name the soloist? I'd love to check out more of her performances, particularly any unaccompanied pieces...
Her name is Dabby Pan (潘宜彤), she joins at least 2 groups to have music tours all over the world every year. Here is her FB: facebook.com/tongtong.pan.1?fref=ts btw,She's the best Ruan performer in TW.
UKISOCIETY No, but soon i believe. Here is the chamber called "Moving Sound" she joins in TW: facebook.com/amovingsound.taiwan and the music salon in Shanghai www.bandumusic.com/en/index.htm You could ask them if any chances to have performance in UK. btw, she plays Ukulele as well.
Thank you for her name! Now I can tell her, that she is really really so extremly good. May be the best of TW. And one can see that she lives the music with each part of her body.
Thank you @UCc9Tx2ElFOXffDR-TOPtWRw (see below!): It's a Zhong Ruan(中阮) concerto, entitled "Reminiscences of Yunnan"(雲南回憶),and composed by Liu Xing(劉星). Many, many thanks! I shall set about getting hold of a copy of this music. I feel so embarrassed at being so ignorant of Chinese classical music but will take steps to rectify this unfortunate state of affairs, I also like the actual instrument which the artist is playing and will see if I can get hold of one for myself. Very Best Wishes!!!
The composer LIU Xing himself has made a record of this concerto in 1993, and was published by Hugo Productions of Hong Kong. The CD is still available (because it is very popular and was re-released again and again).
Excellent performance. The piece is very modern and exciting, especially the zhongruan solos. Who are the performers? It's nice to see not one, but two "da paisheng" (although it's such a crazy instrument).
@Temanilove yes, and that zhongruan is known as the " ruan shi chun " and so far i've only seen hong kong zhongruan musicians use it. i was interested in getting one by didnt have enough info by then.
No western instruments were used in the making of this song. The basses and cellos are the same in every way except shape in both cultures.
From left to right: tenor sheng, alto sheng and soprano sheng There is no bass sheng in this video, The bass sheng is bigger and normally requires the player to hug it while playing.
Matt Goode Whoops I think I was wrong on the translation. My apologies. They maybe called 'Diyin Sheng', or 'Cizhongyin Sheng' in Chinese. Search that for (maybe) better results.
+tpcksh323 Thank you! With that information I was able to locate an MP3 of the entire piece: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S994RI/ I don't know if it's available on CD, but this will do for a start. Very nice composition, and impressive soloist.
+fartwrangler The members of the concert are from the department of Chinese music of Tainan National University of the Arts. Here's the soloist's facebook, facebook.com/tongtong.pan.1. They don't publish the video record or audio of the concerts based on the webpage of the department. However, the mp3 you found are not produced by the department,.
+tpcksh323 Thanks again. I love the instrumentation and the composition; would like to find more works by this composer. As regards the mp3's -- since Amazon is charging money for these, I hope some of that is going to support the University and/or the performers! If not, it should be.
You may search for Hong Kong Hugo Company, which the composer LIU Xing himself, who is also a great Ruan master, has recorded this piece in 1993. This CD is still available (re-produce again and again). I think LIU Xing's version is better than anyone.
Whew! So glad I was able to find this again.

Thank you for sharing! This energetic and beautifully performance! The solist woman dominates the instrument with masterfully !
Ruan might be the most accessible way to get western musicians playing along. It really does have a rock or heavy metal sensibility in many songs.
Eye opening performance! Amazing skill!
thx all my friends

Brilliant in every sence. Thanks very much for sharing this video here!

OMG... at @7.04.... the soloist was smilling..... thats the hardest part of the whole song.....
Ridiculously good..
@mtmt88 In fact, this piece of work was composed by the composer "劉星" (Liu, Xing) of China.

EXLENTE
A tinge of minimalism
They are the students of music school, so we can not compare ourselves with them. To play well is their profession.
what a stunningly attractive woman
ME HUBIERA GUSTADO NACER EN EL ORIENTE

😍🎻🎺💯
its in gdgd tuning
She is outstanding. Is she from Taiwan and does she make her living exclusively as a zhongruan soloist?
She is from Taiwan
Ritchie Blackmore, is that you?
Please tell me where can I find
Polar Bear

Can you please tell us the name of this zhongruan soloist?
Thank you all tem sup..........!
Muy bueno (Y)
The 2 pipe organ like instruments in close up around 4'30, are they some kind of bass sheng?
From left to right:
tenor sheng, alto sheng and soprano sheng
There is no bass sheng in this video,
The bass sheng is bigger and normally requires the player to hug it while playing.
Ong Zhi Yang i think u meant baritone sheng
Natheniel Becken
I can't find a source that refers to it as baritone sheng.
Matt Goode Whoops I think I was wrong on the translation. My apologies. They maybe called 'Diyin Sheng', or 'Cizhongyin Sheng' in Chinese. Search that for (maybe) better results.
Matt Goode BTW 'diyin' is Chinese for 'bass', and 'cizhongyin' for tenor.
Wow. Where can I get a CD of this?
Would someone transliterate the title, composer, and soloist names for an English speaker, please?TIA.

@linanqikiki I wouldn't be suprised, most of them probably started playing when they were 2 :)
pity the video is slightly off sync but still
5stars!
Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music for that?
I'd be really grateful!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhongruan
for reference
中阮
What is the instrument called the girl in red is playing......sounds a bit like a banjo or mandolin, but clearly isn't.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhongruan
@spinblast no... the ruan head isnt broken
Is this ruan in cello tuning or something different?
Ruan is GDGD, but cello is CGDA
What stringed instrument is the soloist playing? I don't think it's a Pipa based on body shape.
It's Zhong-yuan 中阮, meaning "Middle-sized Yuan"
Man Chun Kam I think u meant Ruan, not Yuan. And 'alto', not 'middle-sized'.
Natheniel Becken
The zhong (中) in zhong-ruan means medium, not alto.
Matt Goode If you wish to put it this way, then yes. But you might want to believe in a native Chinese speaker.
