bought a blackmagic 5'' video assist 3g (about 300€ used) for somewhat the same use case but i really need the display and the HDMI (loop) out to be outputting at the same time. weight, bigger file sizes and no analog is no deal breaker for me. btw: it feels pretty durable, can work with 4k 60. still FHD recording, with bigger files and way more expensive new in stores...
thought if someone is interested in "something close" but a little different feature set, the video assist could be an option worth mentioning.
On the other hand an HDMI-Splitter could do the trick for me when i don't need the bigger files
I think the yellow plug is composite video and the RGB is component.

I'm looking at this as an alternative to a Atomos Ninja V. I;d be recording 1080p anyways since my EOS R is the only camera I have that records at 4k (My other camneras are a T2i and a 5D2). Was looking for a solution to record pas 30 minutes for a gig I have coming up.
My main concern is the bit rate. 18MBps is a little ont he low side ... not TERRIBLE but not what I am used to. Still 400$ Canadian VS 800$ for the Ninja V is pretty tempting even if it doesn;t record 4k.

2 things I don't like it it splits the movies up u have to have a program to merge the movies back together and #2 it records files big I capture a 130min movie it took up 9GB of footage
This may be the "set it and forget it" DVR for gamers to have always hooked up to their gaming PCs and consoles.
I just want an always on DVR for HDMI. I rarely want video from my games, but there have been moments that wished I could pull the last hour of gaming. Setting up a streaming rig for a regular gamer is a hassle.

The one thing I need clarity on, does it record HDMI audio *and* mic in audio at the same time? I need to record some demos from my computer out with voice over, but also hear what is coming out of the computer (via HDMI audio). I knew you would do a great review, you are a trusted source & knowledgeable. Thanks for posting!

Can’t you just turn the mic off…or adjust the volume…or use the line in from a audio mixer…or, stop talking…while using the line out through headphones to control audio volume. ? seems you do have options…and,will it record content protected sources ? Thanks for covering this unit…

yes it captures from your hdmi output so basically anything
It will not record copy-protected content (look on their website under 'Product Usage Warning')
@@mauricemaths I own the device and yes it will record protected content. I have my Blu-ray player plugged directly in playing John wick 3 recording onto my external SSD drive.

Does it record on (720p 25fps) or (1080p 25fps)?
These need an option to capture much higher bitrate and quality. I have old analog videotapes. This is so so for VHS/SVHS, But i have many recordings with Betacam, betacam digital as well as Sd and HD videotapes. And the quality drops so much into this The need to also capture at different frame rates 24, 25, 30, 50 etc. Not locked at 60P as a one size fits all. It doesn't. The Atomos is far superior, as you can choose bitrates and color space many times what these units can ingest.
