Hello Derek. Thumbs up for your VW Golf Mk 4 R32! And the Passat W8 Estate in this video is rare like a unicorn. Not much weren´t build with this engine! Best regards from a viewer from Germany!
2 weeks ago i finally bought my first car and its a...... VW Passat b5 estate 🙌 its not the + version because i wanted the most reliable ( 1.9tdi 81kw ) engine, but im so jealous about the body condition of this one.. its so awesome (excuse me for my bad eng)
Very good choice. My dad had a 1999 b5 passat with the 1.9 tdi engine when he eventually sold it for a newer car it had done 550.000+km and it still ran like new with the original engine. If you do your maintainance the engine is pretty much bulletproof. I wish he kept it, because it was such a good car
I bought this car and imported it to Canada. Great car once I fixed what it needed and removed the stuff off the dash and the ugly rain/wind deflectors off the side windows. Now has 118,000 km on it and running great. I even sourced 2 sets of the original BBS wheels for it.
Dżisys Krajst Well let us put things correctly every country has tax and here in Portugal is one of the must expensive ones. Just a Honda Civic Type R (EP3) between 2002 and 2005 can cost between 15.000 and 20.000€. And in the UK you can buy one form 2500 a 5000£. The last Passat like that from Mr.Derrech sold for 48.000€ in Porto.
We have some videos like that on our other channel "Let's Drive Japan". Though we don't do those anymore. It's the bad part of running a company that you have to actually make money and not do fun things all the time.
The Passat W8, for when you want the possibly most unreliable car ever produced. Seriously, you are hard pressed to find one that isn't on its second or third engine. Also parts and service itself are super expensive since it's the only car ever to get that W8.
Good points@Thomas!Unreliable,hard to find parts for it,when you find parts it is way more costly than for the more common engined cars.Slurping the gas like no tomorrow, not a surprise that this W8 was discontinued and abandoned by VW.It is a develpment dead end, just like the infamous VR5 engine line.
I really don't think anyone buys these because they will make a reliable daily driver - these cars are special because of their rarity and the fact that you have an 8-cylinder engine in a mainstream car, and one from Volkswagen. This is insanity. And that's the appeal of this car, I suppose.
I bout this car brand new in 2004 and I wasn’t expecting reliability but here I am with the car to this day coming close to 200,000 miles and zero problems, I don’t baby this car either I run it hard and just do the maintenance that it requires, maybe I’m just lucky?🤷🏻♂️
Not a JDM fanboy. I am a person that appreciates good cars no atter where they come from. I can't help it that Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s were better than most other cars.
And at this price and condition, even with that check engine light on its a bargain for euro market, too bad it fuel eficiency its comparable to falcon heavy
It's just the law unfortunately. And a lot of the times, these Euro cars have different headlights and things like that in different markets that aren't legal in the US or Canada
it would have been considered as a grey marked vehicle. north american laws block the sale of these as a protectionist action to benefit local sales network because greys are usually cheaper.
if this car is euro spec, it would have e-code headlights. i know they are legal in canada (someone pls confirm this i haven't owned a vw for a decade now), but i am not sure what it is in the usa.
I owned a 2003 B5.5 Passat 30v and as far as I know the W8 came with HID projectors. Also as far as I know there are no euro spec lights for the Passat
I've got one of these. Trying to restore it. I love it the car but it is difficult to find parts. Get used to shopping at all your closest junkyards. That's fake real wood. They didn't make any with real wood. My check engine light has never ever come on. AAAAAAHH you can't buy this in the US? Damn. Nevermind.
Neat I wouldn't ever own another Volkswagen they are shit trust me you don't want on if you're thinking about it I bought one with no check engine light or any of the other lights on in the dash. Right axle replaced abs traction control and all three motor mounts broke 🙃
I own a VW and what I lose in reliability, I gain in excellent driving dynamics and style. When it comes to a super limited edition model like this, you also get appreciating value.
I would not buy it again. The engine is a nightmare to work on. The engine has to be pulled to do the timing chain. the bumper cover has to be removed to replace the headlight bulb. My transmission was going out at 60,000 miles. I loved how it drove and loved the AWD system. It was just too expensive for upkeep. My 2013 turbo Sonata was quicker and got better gas mileage.
I forgot to mention but this was the final generation to be based on the Audi platform before it was moved to the Golf platform.

Don't bother with it if you have low income. You need to have at least what you pay for it set aside for part costs.
that was a legend passing by!
Why no USA import? We have the exact same w8 wagons here
apizzaparty cars have to be 25yrs old here
Wow-- that is one clean looking car.
Oh my, now that one is special.

Benas Jasas I had the 1.9tdi Passat as my first car it was the saloon model, really wish I kept it it ran like a dream so reliable

This Passat has Audi style Torsen center differential 4wd 😊
B5.5 (3BG) the best Passat ever!
That looks really clean
The W8 was meant to be a testbed for the future implementation of the W12 in the Phaeton and the W16 in the Veyron
This generation of passat(b5/b5.5) had the audi torsen based 4wd(aka quattro), and so does every other VAG vehicle with a longitudinal engine.
That's one bad ass wagon, especially with that dipstick :p

Do you still have those rain deflectors ? I’ll buy them I’m trynna find some online rn lol
I WISH the USA would allow this import. the price of this is toooooooooooooo good to pass up!!!!!!!
David M I have one in Portland Maine
Thats a Unicorn right there Sir.
Im from Europe and in here they are very rare and very expensive i cant even imagine the price in Japan ☺
TiagoAndréPT expensive ? It cost 2000-4000 euro
Dżisys Krajst There is one for sale in Holland for €20,000

Fred Schriks Well found only 1 on autoscout (NL) for 7800,- But then it does have over 250k on the clock.
Tharmas13 Ok, then it is already sold.
These Passat B5/B5.5 have the Audi "Quattro" system, since they are basically remodeled Audi A4's
yeah it's...notfacepalm...noooot like an A4 dog. Dragons to Dogs. Different animals.
Wagon 4 life and I spotted the Nissan Figaro!!!!!
Is it possible to buy old cabs in Japan? It'd be cool if you could get your hands on a Toyota Comfort or a Nissan Cedric Y31.
3:37 daaamn... was that a honda legend coupe that just drove by???
It’s looks great. Sounds like a 🍋 however.
HI Derek, I sent you an email in regards to importing a Land Cruiser. Thanks.
It would be really cool to see you driving the cars abit, that oughta be cool for the channel and it's views imho :D
We have some videos like that on our other channel "Let's Drive Japan". Though we don't do those anymore. It's the bad part of running a company that you have to actually make money and not do fun things all the time.
No no no, the B5 Passat had the Audi Quattro powertrain. It uses a Torsen Differential that powered the front and rear wheels 50/50.
I would buy it right now,to bad it’s not imported to USA 😭
Silent Russian I have one in Portland, Maine
Coleman Moffett
We got a outback, thanks for the offer
I also have one in Oregon USA. Its a good car for our rainy climate but is a little expensive for maintenance.
I’m going to assume this is not able to be imported into the USA due to age?
ChwyNiblet are you looking for one?
Yes- she's underage. Not legal yet.
"Did I mention my Golf....over there?"

2359 pcs ever made of it in 3 years,it was considered an unsuccessful engine/version of the car.

I have a W8 too but no big problems with it and more then 205000 km’s..

If i could only get it in the usa.
David Perrin I have one I may be selling

I found the frontlip under Racelook. Just Google Racelook Passat 3bg May you find it
@@bassagnatar8999 found it mate cheers
So many cylinders but on 280bhp..shame
It is like a body builder with a small prick
Super rare. But I thought the 2004 was the rarest.
Derek Have you seen Weeaboos right there In Japan
Well, he is a JDM fanboy, so he is basically an auto-weeaboo
CRA_55 Guess I agree
Not a JDM fanboy. I am a person that appreciates good cars no atter where they come from. I can't help it that Japanese cars from the 80s and 90s were better than most other cars.
PacificCoastAuto i never understood why people stereotype those who like cars built in different countrys lol
All wheel drive is 50% front 50% back all the time i think..
And at this price and condition, even with that check engine light on its a bargain for euro market, too bad it fuel eficiency its comparable to falcon heavy
Check engine lite bro??!! 😭😭😭😭
How much is buddy
Still have it?
I can't get it because of the United States 25 year rule
the 4 wheel drive is from Audi Quattro!!
I just don't get why cars like this that were sold here in the US can be imported.
In this case the headlights are the same. It really is silly.
if this car is euro spec, it would have e-code headlights. i know they are legal in canada (someone pls confirm this i haven't owned a vw for a decade now), but i am not sure what it is in the usa.

God it's my car with a V8 how much did it sell for ?

If you sell cars, why don't you have a cheap code reader? Or just take the time to have it checked. C'mon!
Haldex type
Torsen typ on this one, the next Passat after this was Halidex.
Ummmmm. Ok. You don’t know anything about the car besides the fact that’s it’s a VW. Keep reading your books buddy.
First
Slow car. Idiot engine better with 1.9 tdi :) Audi a6 4.2 is lot faster had better quattro and cost less
You are an idiot, this is awesome
I would not buy it again. The engine is a nightmare to work on. The engine has to be pulled to do the timing chain. the bumper cover has to be removed to replace the headlight bulb.
