    It really irritates me that most of the time when this song is on a playlist or like the Les Mis Soundtrack it skips the prisoners singing. I love the prisoner's parts and I think it's so important and It shouldn't be skipped.

    I don't care what people say about his casting, I think Russel Crowe did a great job as Javert. It may not be Broadway level, but he sings way better than I thought he'd be able to.

    • @Howlingburd19

      I’m not a big fan of his singing, but his acting definitely fits the overall character of Javert and same with his appearance

    • @cooper6381
      @cooper6381 3 роки тому +66

      I think he pulled it off well. The acting was far on point. I very much enjoy that they kept his singing, instead of dubbing or auto tuning or even recasting. I find it hard to believe any movie of this importance would be recast or dubbed, but ya never know.

    • @jz4697
      @jz4697 3 роки тому +91

      I really think his singing is reflective of the character. He is a practical man, his singing is communicative and concise, like barking orders at prisoners or shouting at a criminal to halt.

    • @Zeruel3
      @Zeruel3 2 роки тому +13

      It's not so much that it's not on the same level it's that he doesn't really fit in with the other singers since his musical background is rock instead of Broadway/stage/musicals so it stands out and people think it's worse than it is

    • @hunacean
      @hunacean 2 роки тому +18

      I just think its stupid that they had to record on set. If this was recorded in a studio where post and autotune would have been available, like any other musical ever made his singing would never have been an issue. But nooo

    The sad thing is that even in modern society it's largely the same as in this movie. No one wants to hire an ex-con, even if it was just a minor crime, because even in the event that the business is ok with it if the public ever found out a convicted criminal was working at a local store, it would hurt business if not cause an uproar. And if an ex-con can't make money legally, what do you think they're going to do?

    • @Azaghal1988
      @Azaghal1988 7 років тому +265

      In most countries it's doable to resocialize after prison. The US is really bad, they never got to the resocialize-part and still try to punish during and after prisontime.

    • @LittleBunnyKungFoo
      @LittleBunnyKungFoo 7 років тому +123

      It's definitely limits a person's choices, but there is still work to be had. Some industries don't care much at all, like construction. An ex-con can also start a legitimate business without any extra restrictions or disclosure requirements.
      In most areas, the 'minor crimes' that you referenced can be expunged after 7 years. After that, the individual doesn't even have to disclose it to their prospective employer.

      Dragging the whole mast section to Javert was Valjean basically giving the middle finger. "I brought you the flag to you, but you can get your 'clean' hands dirty if you want it so much." Could also be symbolic of his feelings for the government that imprisoned him so long, dragging the flag through the mud and filth is not exactly respectful.
      Similarly, Javert shows Valjean how little he cares/respects him a moment later. "My name is Jean Valjean." "Whatever you say, 24601." Dehumanizing, belittling, reduced to a number, not an individual.

    After this movie came out, We all Chanted “Look Down, Look Down” Every time we saw him, or he was coming towards us.
    We did it so much all of the classes eventually did it. He always got super pissed off when he heard us singing that and made us do push ups and crazy workouts. But we whispered to each other “Don’t look him in the eye” and so on as we laughed trying to finish the exercises. He was known as Javert after that Year 😂

    • @maicey_t.
      @maicey_t. 6 років тому +56

      Ghost I haven't read the book in a while, but if I remember right, he was only sentenced five years for the bread (which is still ridiculous, but whatever). The remaining time was because he tried to escape two or three times and actually succeeded in one of his attempts. The worst part of it is (If I remember right) that each time he tried to escape he was almost done with his sentence. He just kept making it worse for himself instead of waiting for his sentence to end.

    • @Ventanty
      @Ventanty Рік тому

      It's factually not.
      The tempo is all-over the place, actors aren't singing in time, the orchestra had to literally slow down and up to make the scenes believable enough.
      I don't mind the tune the actors sang in, but Christ this is a trainwreck for anyone who knows the truth about the production of the movie.

    The point of departure, like the point of arrival, for all his thoughts, was hatred of human law; that hatred which, if it be not arrested in its development by some providential incident, becomes, within a given time, the hatred of society, then the hatred of the human race, then the hatred of creation, and which manifests itself by a vague, incessant, and brutal desire to do harm to some living being, no matter whom. It will be perceived that it was not without reason that Jean Valjean's passport described him as a very dangerous man.
    From year to year this soul had dried away slowly, but with fatal sureness. When the heart is dry, the eye is dry. On his departure from the galleys it had been nineteen years since he had shed a tear.
