In my opinion, building levels is way more fun nowadays (mainly now with 2.2), because I prefer to decorate, mess with triggers, create animations, art, etc. and I don't enjoy making gameplay that much, but yeah, back then the bar for making good-looking levels wasn't as high, nowadays everything is about how good your level looks, which is not necessarily bad, but makes it extremely hard for newer players to make a rate-worthy level.
People keep saying that getting rated was easier in 1.9, but getting a rated level in 1.9 was actually pretty much impossible since RobTop had no mods and almost exclusively rated levels from already well-known creators
numbers just for proving the point obviously ~~and not like nowadays only well known people get the levels rated just because they are famous... nahhh~~
I myself am not a 1.9 player but I started in very early 2.0 and I still remember playing so many of these levels. It's kinda sad I can't relive those memories again.
Any update before 2.0 was so fair for everyone to get a rated level. Now if your not viprin or mindcap and you don't make glow levels, you have no chance of getting a rate. Its depressing
Even though I downloaded GD in 2019, 1.9 has always held a special place in my heart, and I've always wanted to go back in time and live those memories myself. Too bad I was too late. :(
for creators and community, 1.9 is definitely the golden age. but besides nostalgia, these levels look bad compared to late 2.1/early 2.2 levels. the dedication creators put in their levels nowadays make objectively better levels

The difference between 1.9 and 2.1 is getting star rated level achievement was possible
In 2.11 since 2021 getting star rated is more frequent now, for example i have two star rates! :D

Same for me I started not even 3 weeks after 2.0 release, because it was so early there weren’t too many 2.0 levels so 1.9 levels were still the thing

Yea, I joined in 2017 and I'm really wishing I could be in 1.9 and live through that time when levels like cataclysm were considered impossible

i played this game ever since 1.0 and its stoll fun
no matter how simple the deco is, old levels to me always stand out more than modern levels

Despite not playing 1.9, but I saw 1.9 lvls are cool, such as Tetrix
Players back then had a better sense of rhythm than many creators nowadays, and also weren't obsessed with minimalism and tap indicators
