Marble mason here. Honestly though. Natural stone pillars? Ain’t nobody got money for that. For stucco these look great. The fiberglass will make them plenty strong and there is a good mechanical bond to the polystyrene. Fuck I kinda want to build a floating house out of this stuff. Imagine a Romanesque building floating by you.
Yknow, I have no problem with not using actual marble. Shit's expensive and hard to ship. But I'd always figured modern column-like objects were made of mostly concrete or the like, not *foam*.
What's hilarious, and absolutely backwards is, ancient pillars, stones and moldings were so awe inspiring because they DID take numerous hours/days/months of tremendous effort and skill. It's funny even how they mention that their main 'function' is to "trick" people into thinking you've done something special. Joke.
Honestly these aren't just tacky but they are also just a sign that whoever built the house has no idea what they're doing. I'd have much more respect for someone that has a simple small boxy house that's actually built of bricks with proper foundation and sturdy roof than for somebody with a grorified two story shed covered in foam. The first one may be less imposing but it will at least not fall apart after 5 years.
My knowledge of English is inadequate to express my feelings. But this just adds horror to horrible buildings. Genuine fake! Btw. no classic column would have the same dimensions all the way up.
The damage marble mining does...as opposed to using expanded polystyrene, which is a petrochemical derivative? Seriously, you're trying to defend decorating a building with glued-on blocks of packing foam. Also columns don't need to be made from marble (you can use granite, or have a decorative coating over concrete), and the trim shown here is usually made from wood or plaster. I mean look at 4:53, that shit is just stuck onto a flat wall and it looks ridiculous.
robert karas I was talking to the person who mentioned "the damage (of) actual marble mining." My point being, polystyrene is a petrochemical derivative which is just as bad, the things in question don't have to be made of marble, and sticking packing foam to a building to fake opulence looks ridiculous. I was _agreeing_ with you.
3:22 Call me deaf, but it SO Sounds like she's saying, "A worker then transfers the moldings to Iraq, to cure for a minimum of 24 hours." Well, that's one way to end a war...
We’re better off leaving classical ornaments to the ancient master builders. Nothing mass produces will ever be able to reach the correct level of detail needed to do justice to how it was done originally. The life of any design is found in the human touch of craft found in the details. When you remove the humanity from how any form of art is produced, you also lose an essential aspect of beauty.
At least use the negative to make a solid arch or column. Styrofoam should not be used in home construction.....unless it's a mold for something good like plaster or concrete.
This actually a very clever way to make concrete mouldings. Think about it. It is a concrete shell that has uses styrofoam as a filler. It is more elastic and lighter than solid concrete pours. Although it may not appeal to some of you, it is designed for those who do. This plant obviously has a market to sell to. I love old school solid, carved or poured mouldings, but can also appreciate this. Architecure and art can be viewed the same: classic vs. new school. Everyone interprets it differently. Spend some time studying art, architecture, and concrete moulding methods. If you don't like these mouldings, well at least you thought something about it and go on to what you like.
I work in EPS as the quality guy for my plant. There are molds for concrete pillars. This is just some shitty decoration. EPS is used in more things than you realize.
Smart technology... for a children's playhouse. Sometimes it seems I'm the only person in the room who doesn't hold a grudge against the United States these days. But at this point, I need to speak out. Please, what is it with Americans and their awful perceptions of style and quality? Really, from home building to dress sense: words cannot describe the horror of America as Plastic Fantastic Central. I realise the generalisations here. But who does enjoy living in a cheaply constructed McMansion built to last only 15 years and wearing a shiny, poorly fitting suit made of equally poor synthetic materials? Or heaven forbid: a combination of those two (i.e. a McMansion housewarming).
Well as the owner of a cabinet shop with a moulder, I can tell you that not everyone can afford to buy a house and then bring in someone like me to make actual mouldings and then put them inside, where they ought to be. These are appliques that go on the outside, to sex up a tract house for developers. I may also mention that almost all the companies on this show are Canadian so... Yeah... Not us. Sorry.
The durability on these sounds terrible. Solid concrete would last longer. Concrete with steel rebar in it would be even stronger, but would sadly cost a lot.
This is not hand made moulds these are machine made and then hand finished no skill required watch the guy make the ceiling centre then you will see a craftsman 👍👌👍
Synthetic is code for crap. I want a house that costs 1M$ that lasts 10 yrs tops, and has a resale value of 0$. I swear the builders must pay off the inspectors, there's no way these "mansions" are up to code. When you buy a house for 1/10 of what at would cost to build it right, you get exactly what you pay for.
Are all the people in the comments opposed to the neoclassical style in general/to its use in modern buildings, or just to those ornaments being made out of foam? I don't get all the aversion. It's true, though, the building at the end does look horrendous. But that's largely because the faux structural elements and ornaments were used chaotically and are incongruous with the general architectural vision of the building.
Who’s here because of McMansion Hell?!?!
Nothing is built to last anymore
Ditto :(
McMansion Hell is fantastic - I've learned a lot about architecture: quoin, portico, dormer, fanlight...
I'm here from McM. H. By accident! Just touched the wrong part of my IPad...and now instant disappointment. LAME.

Nothing *was in 2004
I'm suddenly less envious of my all my rich neighbor's homes. My shitty 96 year old house isn't made of foam.
Yeah . My house is made of wood, mostly, too. I guess we're doomed to a life of shame.

Seems to this non-marble mason that foam would chip in a hail storm. No?
@@blueprairiedog not if the stucco is done right.
Ideal for film set making and that’s about it I’d say
I gotta imagine this is how theme parks and disney world is made!

Wow, this new technology can make expanded polystyrene that only _almost_ looks entirely unlike real stone!

I can't quite put into words why, but this seems like a terrible, horrible , no good, very bad idea.
Styrofoam ages badly and it burns pretty well.
"It was foam all along?"
"its always been"

Yup
I found out about them because of this comment. You have changed my life
I got here, a bit indirectly, from Mcmansion Hell.
What's weird is that I thought I had come up with that term on my own!

McMansions use peel and stick bricks and/or stones, more fakery.
My knowledge of English is inadequate to express my feelings. But this just adds horror to horrible buildings. Genuine fake! Btw. no classic column would have the same dimensions all the way up.
"It's total bullshit" sums it up nicely, I think.
Styrofoam has no place as a building material.
Marble?
Its not used as a structural support, rather as a molding. And it has a very long life time...
Insulation?
Thats right america, your $5,000 molding is a piece of foam painted with stucco
