Mahalaya is the beginning of the holy festival of Navratri and Durga Pooja. The last day of Pitru Paksha marks the beginning of Mahalaya, which is the start of Devi Paksha, or the special period for the worship of the Goddess. It falls six days before the day of Mahasaptami; one of the most crucial days of Navratri. It marks the arrival of Durga Pooja for millions of devotees around the world. According to legend, Devi Durga starts her journey to earth on the auspicious day of Mahalaya. Thus it is an important day for greeting the Goddess to come and bless us. It is the day of Amavasya or the no Moon period during the Dakshinayan or southern journey of the Sun. This coincides with the autumn equinox and is an ideal time to seek Devi’s blessings. Many devotees consider the day of Mahalaya as an extremely important tithi for seeking the blessings of their ancestors and saying the final goodbyes to them, as it is the final day of Pitru Paksha. It is one of the most important days of the year to perform rituals and austerities for the attainment of Godly blessings and the overall improvement of one’s life.
